This movie scared the CRAP out of me when I was a little kid. I appreciate it now because this was made during the Cold War when everyone feared an atomic war and there were also many flying saucer sightings in the early 50's - you could feel the anxiety.....
@Johnlindsey289 No, it was far inferior, unless you're only into special effects. Whether or not an adaptation is 100% is irrelevant to actual quality; I don't suppose you complain about all the liberties Blade Runner took with its source material.
1982's movie is a masterpiece and a true cult classic plus it did justice to the book, i love me some gore. I bet you saw E.T. instead of The Thing in 1982 and made that a flop, this movie is nothing like the book, Carpenter's version did the book more justice and he did respected this movie since he is a huge fan of it as he loves it. Unless you have a passion for old movies this is for you, 1982's movie is made for fans of the novella like myself. 1982's movie is misunderstood.
@Johnlindsey289 I'm a hardcore literary SF fan and that has nothing to do with my cinematic preferences; it's because I put writing, acting and direction over FX and gore. And yeah, I saw ET in theaters instead of The Thing, but I didn't have a choice because I was only 6 at the time. The Thing flopped because of poor reviews and bad word of mouth, not because of ET.

Not better, just different. This one is still the scariest movie of all time. Won't watch it alone and I'm 58.

The remake was better and more true to the book.
