@garyyyy1996gario Hey, Gary, you could go on the SSCC Message Board and you could volunteer to be a course worker. Take your old man out in the desert, watch the cars go by, then hit him up to take you in the event next time. Anyway, thanks for the comment!
@bearwoodbrown - Great question! My rule is to roll out of the throttle and prepare to stop for white smoke (i.e., dust from a crash into the desert) but to stay in the throttle for black smoke (i.e., a blown engine). So I was late rolling out of the throttle, but I could see all the way through the cockpit and it was empty so I kept going. If Jerry had been inside, I would have stopped for sure.
@Marcus4president Yes, anyone 18 or over with a valid drivers license can enter with any four-wheeled vehicle that passes the technical inspection. Speed is limited by safety equipment and experience.
Supercharged NSX. Great Car, Beautife machines. Wish someone would make a good turbo kit for those taht are somewhat affordable. Wish i lived out west so I could the the STi loose. All that wishing aside sweet vid.
Thanks for the kind comments. You should bring that STi out for a romp in the desert next May! One of our Team Invaders members runs one and has a ton of fun.
You can enter pretty much any car. Your top speed is limited by the safety equipment you have. The Silver State Classic web site is a good place to find out the rules. Thanks!
Thanks for the interest! These events are legal, sanctioned by NDOT, and occur in May and September. Yes, you can enter a truck. Check out the website for the Silver State Classic Challenge. There are also events in Mexico, Nebraska, and Texas.
Hi, thanks for the questions! No motorcycles allowed I'm afraid. As for this "Mad Dawg" racer, he earned his nickname with 2 Purple Hearts in the military, and you couldn't ask for a better friend. We appreciate your interest!
Thanks, I've hit a bird twice now at speed. The first time I had my cousin with me who had his head down reading pace notes to me. There was a big bang, and I said pretty much the same thing, "Bird strike, windshield's intact." He told me later that just about the time he thought we'd blown a tire and he was going to die, my words registered, he realized he wasn't going to die after all, and he never had time to get scared.
Jerry was fine. When I went by, I could see clearly into the driver's side window that he had already gotten out. He blew an engine, the rear wheels were coated with oil, and the car went sideways and then flipped and slid to the side. A course worker came down right away, put out the oil fire with an extinguisher, and helped Jerry out. The course worker was a physicians assistant and was able to verify Jerry's condition. Radio comm was excellent, and you can see the safety plane.
Wow, now I'm really flattered. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. It's interesting that the apex dynamics are different on a crowned road than at the track, because when you cross over the center line on the trackout, you're off camber, plus you don't want to go out too far because of the debris on the sides. In addition, the trucks that normally use the road create ruts that you never feel at normal speeds but which throw you from side to side when you're over 150. Thanks again.
I'm very flattered. The really good drivers are people like Charlie Friend and Ted Hughes and Richard Hille. Richard has a video that shows him driving through a turn at 205 mph while completely blinded by white oil smoke from a broken oil line - he drives by sensing the rumble strips at each side of the road in the curve! Now that's a great driver. I'll see if I can get him to post the video called "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes".
To remain calm under pressure and to exibit the kind of skill you showed there (understanding complex apex dynamics) while driving represents something more than the normal driver can experience. Ive raced a fair bit and the differences are subtle but watching that drive was inspirational. I realize that the majority of youtube viewers won t appreciate this video but there are a few moments where the driving 'experience' comes alive in this video and i think we can both relate on this level.
maybe when i'm older and can afford a faster car. Also i live in the UK so it would take a bit of planning lol... unless rental cars are allowed hahahaha
You're too kind! I think the slow, smooth approach comes from knowing how much it hurts to crash ;-) Your RX7 is a great machine - our team captain drives one. Come out and join Team Invaders!
Yes, quite a few HPDEs plus track and FIA rally events. Bondurant and Barber are good. The track is very different than an open road event. At Laguna Seca I hit 130 mph whereas in the NORC I spend many minutes over 160. Tracks have smooth surfaces + some nice runoff areas, but 318 is just a high desert highway - if your car goes out of bounds, it's not coming back intact. So I'm very conservative - late apexes and low g forces. Be very smooth and keep a high visual horizon. Best regards -
oops, hit a bird. oops piece of crap flying off over people's cars. oops, car upside down on fire. oops, san andreas fault became active and tore away the part of nevada that had the finish line. remain calm Tom! LOL LOVE IT!!!
As one of the top racers said, "Ah, the whine of a supercharger!" Yes, it's a bit of a beast now - have to be careful not to break the rear tires loose. Thanks!
LOL! nice one for hitting the bird anyways nice car and speed there I would like to race one of those one day, and I am Roger's from the bus son.

Are bikes allowed on this event?
And why there's always someone named 'Mad Dog' on these events? :)

Nice video log ! I'm thinking about participating in 2009 with pretty much stock GMC Duramax diesel.

Hi Paul,
There have been some similar vehicles in the past, and they have done well in their class. Imagine four black peelout strips at the start line!

I used that motorcycle scroller for my pace notes, but I'm going to do without it next month. Thanks for your kind remarks. Come out and join us!
