  • @kvnftzsmmns It's called Polyrhythms. Sounds sick eh?

  • Kickass, I love heir sound, it's so brutal and melanchonic!

  • God damn 2:12 is one of the most sophisticated things I've ever heard.

  • I bet most of people arguing about genres aren't even musicians and just repeat what they read on internet

  • @nicobike being a musician myself, I know full well that you are one hundred percent right. the people who care about this stuff the most realize that genres don't matter, all that does is creating something that sounds fantastic.

  • who gives a fuck what sub genre it is. ITS FUCKING METAL.

  • I usually hate clean vocals.

But Periphery's clean vocals are way better, considering they don't sound boy-bandish.

  • FUCK your gender wars..wanna talk bullshit go somewhere else. You should write something nice about the band instead of bitching about boxing of styles

  • Anybody know what he say's at 3:34? lol

    Periphery \m/

  • The drummer for this band is something else. The snare rolls add a lot to the sound, definitely.

  • Djenty goodness! Love this band!

  • Yay!! I passed in my Geometric Progression paper!!!!!! :D

  • Goddammit guys! It's just fucking cool music!

  • Guys, i'm really annoyed about that...

    It's METAL!

  • you guys are pathetic with all the genre types and shit ... its good and that all that matters .. djent.. who cares!!!! how bout this it will be under the metal section in the stores ... right along side the same section as as i lay dying, metallica !!! who the fuck cares! THIS IS A GREAT BAND ! no offense to anyone but it is quite annoying to hear see all these types that people are coming up with to be "different".

  • SCREW YOUR GENRES! SCREW YOUR SCENE! neither matters all that matters is good music, so shut up and enjoy it!

  • @ihatescreamobands THANK YOU !

  • @ihatescreamobands your username... that is all.

  • Djent Is A MUSIC GENRE -___-

  • @lilpimpjjpimp23 How do you think other genres came to existence? They were created -__-

  • @lilpimpjjpimp23 Djent has been made a genre, and it is also an onomatopoeia for the sound of "djent" when chords are chugged using a particular picking technique.

  • This is defo progressive; prog has always been characterized by being inventive and unusual. Time signatures show that, throwing djent and the crazy tap solo prove it and the odd song structure cements it. Progressive; why do you think they're touring with Dream Theater?

  • muito foda!!

  • Mathcore...Silly name, Progressive is what this is, odd time signatures, accenting different beats, thats everything this band is, its progressive. Djent? No, thats not a genre of music, its them turning up the mids on their amps so they get a specific tone from the guitars instead of cutting all the mids. You do not brand the genre of music by the tone of your guitar. I can turn up the mids to get this sound on my guitar, and play BB King, does that mean I'm playing Djent instead of blues? No.

  • @magnificoamar This is not progressive. The band might be, but this song is not.

  • @Jig1123 I was talking about the band in specific. And yes, this song is progressive lol. Listen to the main riff that plays for the first good minute of the song, and then right after that is a large taping part that is not all in 4/4, then a very odd transition that I have no idea how to count correctly, and then back into the very odd riff....This song is progressive...

  • @magnificoamar you do have a fairly valid point but then again every genre has a specific sound which makes that genre unique djent is no diffrent is it very unique and distinct so how is it not a genre

  • this sounds so much shitcore....do not like.

  • @MrEinstain wow.. it does not... Periphery is unique. Atleast in my ears and eyes.

  • Comment removed

  • who cares if it is called djent. it's a new name to describe a type of music. just like when grunge was a thing. emo - same. and all sub genres of metal. it's a name that has stuck and will continue to be used just like every other label. it's really not a big deal so don't get so butt hurt over something so trivial as a genre label. even misha calls it djent.

  • Fuckin hell...who gives a shit what sub genre of progressive metal it is. The fact is, its probably the best metal band I and most of you have heard in the last 5+ years and they are epic! Just enjoy and stop troling

  • oh gods that intro. <3

  • Its music. It sounds fantastic. Why cant that be enough for some people?

  • 5:30

    FUS RO DAH!

  • ROW..... ROW....

    FIGHT THE POWUH.

  • 3:50 to 4:15 gives me chills. I love that part!

  • ROW!

  • just to clear the air progressive is not periphery they are not progressive at all. dream theatr is progressive. Djent is a picking style watch any periphery video where they use djent. it is a own picking style. they are math metal and they fucking rock \m/

  • @ghandrbluver "Math metal is a derivative of technical metal" "Technical Metal (also Tech Metal) is a sub-genre of Progressive Metal" they're all basically one in the same, swapping elements between each other whilst evolving.

  • @ghandrbluver djent is more the sound of the guitarsound they created with they effects and amp setting while heavily palmmutting, not picking in general ;)

  • @ghandrbluver Djent is not a picking style, it is a 4-note powerchord

  • @xXxH4L0PHR33KxXx uhm troll shut the fuck up you don't know anything look up djent it's not a 4 note powerchord. gosh you're fuckng retarded

  • @ghandrbluver First of all, I wasn't expressing any troll-like traits, I was simply informing him that he was wrong. Second of all, MISHA MANSOOR HIMSELF SAID DJENT WAS A 4-NOTE POWERCHORD. It's at 3:54 in this video " /watch?v=Idt5uGrv3y8 " . Whose the retard now??

  • @ghandrbluver I've never heard of math metal, but if thats what this is then I like it either way.

  • @ghandrbluver lol fail

  • @ghandrbluver Progressive music is music that thinks forward - experiments (and i don't want to hear that "that's called experimental metal" shit). They might as well be the same thing - experimental and progressive. Djent is not a genre - it's an ONOMATOPOEIA for the sound of a palm-muted guitar. As for the math-metal thing, most of Periphery's songs are in 4:4. For example: this, Icarus Lives, Insomnia, Jetpacks was Yes, All New Materials, most of Buttersnips, among others.

    Progressive this is

  • @ghandrbluver Meh..thumbs down. You have no idea what you're talking about.

  • @ghandrbluver They are not mathmetal.. atleast not in my opinion. Djent is a sound!

  • @ghandrbluver You do not know anything about anything dumbass

  • @ghandrbluver Do you even know what is progressive music?

  • @ghandrbluver Djent is not a picking style, its the tone you get from an amp. And yes picking style does affect the tone but you cant do Djent with a lowgain amp even with a correct picking style...

  • @ghandrbluver they're not math metal because math metal is switching in and out of time signatures and typically evolves alot of subdividing and syncapated offbeats. They're more progressive... especially with the scales they use and chord progression...

  • "vessel through the deeeeerp"?

  • @ChronoGXay lmfao it's deep

  • @ghandrbluver - lol Yeah, I know. xD I love this band.

  • @ghandrbluver - Oh, yeah, and 'That's what she said'.

  • @ghandrbluver - That's what she said. ;D

  • i hate debates about musical genres, and so do bands. give it a rest.

  • I don't give a fuck if these guys are influenced by meshuggah or if meshuggah started djent. Periphery is way better.

Do i listen to Elvis because he is the king of rock and roll? No, so shut the fuck up about meshuggah, they suck dick.

  • @scottpetuoguu lmfao that was a good one

  • oh fuck it.

    DISSSS AAAAA PEEAAAAARRRRR!!!!!!

  • This song!!! It's the one song from the album that Amazon won't let me download individually.

  • ive known about periphery for a long ass time but what is the name of this kinda music were its got the extremely hard and fast paced music but it also has clean vocals mixed in it

  • @TheBloodyHoliday they're a progressive/math metal band. TesseracT might also be up your alley.

  • @Joelisonfire Circles are also pretty good.

  • @Joelisonfire i dont really think that you would coutn this as math metal, pretty much just progressive metal/post hardcore

  • @Joelisonfire They're progressive, but also a style called Djent

  • @Raiderfan123 it's a type of picking style

  • @ghandrbluver No it's not exclusively a picking style, it's a style involving polyrhythms and heavier guitar tones with polyrhythmic picking as well.

  • @TheBloodyHoliday i think some kind of progressive metalcore. bands with the same structure are between the buried and me, born of osiris and the contortionist(their song flourish is awesome).

  • @TheBloodyHoliday it's called Djent. also check out Oceano and Meshuggah and the Contortionist.

  • @TheBloodyHoliday Try Protest The Hero too maybe... or Between the Buried and Me.

They're not "djent" but they are prog that have clean and screamed vocals.

  • @TheBloodyHoliday I think the genre that you're looking for is avant garde, not progress or math metal.

  • Djentitalia? Or did someone already say that.

  • DJENT PUNSZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

  • Spencer is fucking awesome vocalist, everyone who disagrees can go watch another video.

  • just saw them last wednsday, me and my freind got to meet them it so awsome

  • Periphery are finally coming to my city (Madrid, Spain) in February. Finally get the chance to see them! I´ll probably go haywire when they play this song

  • Dude, idk wtf people are bitching about the vocals.

IMO the vocals arent bad at all...

but I do agree the Instrumental itself is fkin greatness.

    fkin haterz dawg.

FYI, I downloaded both Instrumental & official

  • Misha Mansoor, his last name same with one of my friend. Hafsha Saliha Mansoer.

  • I am a complete new fag... :( Why is there always like djentlemen? what is the dj instead of a g?

  • @ericvader8 google djent and you'll start to understand.

  • @Joelisonfire keyword: start

  • KKK is cool

  • my gosh i love his voice:D

  • A few weeks ago, me & some friends got stoned & one of them was blatsing this song while we were watching Star Wars.....That was the very first time ive heard of this band & fell in love

  • @checkerdeath I was totally havin a nice time listening to this, then you made it gay...

  • love djent with clean vox? check HILLVALLEY watch?v=JOGRe1acJuI

  • @tantricConvulsions ... i had to sign in.. change my password verify my email which i didnt remember so i had to change my email then had to go to email and confirm in then had to retype the comment ALLL becuase of what you just said.... ooownnnneddddddddddddaaahhh niggahhhh wub wub wub

  • @asylum414 just pissed myself chuckling.

  • Played palm muted guitar today. MLIDjent.

  • Its pronounced JENT because of its Swedish roots. Fredrik Thorendal made the term from an onomatopoeic standpoint, and since he is Swedish, he made it... Swedish.

  • its metal! thats it dyent or whatever is the worse label of a type of music ever!

  • @lowlife1096 You sir, obviously are not a Djentleman.

  • i like the instrumental better

  • i thought it was pronounced like duh-jent...

  • @christianthegreat21 yeah me too. it gives it the double beat sound, which is a common rhythm used in djent metal, like this song.

  • As i recall this is the first periphery song that I actually got into. I like the first ones I heard like Racecar and Jetpacks was yes but i didn't really like them until I heard this. It got me to like his airy vocals which made periphery all the more survivable

  • @ProgMetal370 wow, they managed to hold a tune for 3 minutes on an instrumental. that changes nothing about what i've said about them. just demonstrates that they have a moment where they reach outside their box. which pretty much any artist does from time to time.

  • @corpusc Meshuggah is not based on melody they did alot of things that helped make a pathway for bands like this NOT all music has to be melodic for music is just sound in time. Your opinion is your own but saying a band isn't melodic went its not trying to is really stupid its like saying that a death metal band is not brutal because it has no breakdowns its just stupid.

  • @CrypticFuneral thats a stupid reply that basically says "you hurt my feelings by criticising one of the bands i like".

if you don't care about the PRIMARY element that defines almost all music and are satisfied with just rhythms combined the melodic equivalent of "baby talk", that's your business. i didn't criticise you personally.

but you shouldn't be surprised or offended when that's not enough for other people.

  • Seeing these guys and The Human Abstract play this Sunday. Stoked out of my mind.

  • Ugh seriously. Periphery have a lot of their own elements put into their songs, having similar chugging riffs doesn't make them a Meshuggah clone.

  • Is Mzral telling Meshuggah to listen to Periphery cause there a real band or telling us to listen to Meshuggah cause they are a real band... confuseddd... im going to go with the telling Meshuggah to listen to Periphery :D

  • i love how this band can be melodic and techical at the same time

  • @MrIIJOEYII yeah, melody is the key thing here. that puts them in a whole, much higher level than crap "math metal" like Meshuggah

  • @corpusc meshuggah is good at what they do but it just wouldnt be any fun to listen to if you didnt play an instrument

  • @MrIIJOEYII i play guitar, bass, drums.

however that's not something thats required in order to analyze music and know that its melodically challenged.

  • i hate when everybody gets all competitive about whats metal and whats not , yall sound fucking retarded

  • I had doubts about this album when it first came out, mainly because of the vocals. Boy, was I a moron. This thing grew on me like a tumor. It just kept growing and growing until it was so big that I could no longer remove it from my brain. One of the best albums of the last 5 years, definitely.

  • why the hell does it only count my views?

  • ROW

  • periphery... little kit loads of talent! i wish i could play drums like that

  • Meshuggah

    #1

    Lamb of God #2

    Periphery #3

    Personal opinion.

  • this is one of those bands i completely zone out the vocals. with a badass vocalist these guys would be much better music is still impressive i just don't like them whiny boy band vocals

  • @kawridr6 thank you!

  • @kawridr6

I agree. a band sometimes just doesnt need a vocalist, the first thing that comes to mind is Scale the Summit. Also, as much as I respect Cannibal Corpse being the death metal pioneers that they are, they would also benefit from not having a vocalist.

  • @raiderpower13 yeah periphery would be much better if they didn't have a vocalist the music is interesting enough to where they don't need one and the main band i always thought didn't a voacalist is btbam again amazing musicians but the vocals almost ruin it.

  • @kawridr6

it is almost as if a vocalist is needed to legitimize a band. Lets be honest, there are bands that definitely benefit from a vocalist being absent and may be freakin' awesome, but are surrounded by a mist of obscurity because they "need" a vocalist to make the band "better." The best example I can think of a vocalist really not being needed is Dream Theater, the band are Amazing musicians but they have to have James LaBrie as their puppet to be better known and get paid!!

  • @raiderpower13 i agree dude! some people act like vocals make a song when for me it's the last bit to complete a band and if you can't find a vocalist that works with the music do without or at least until you find someone good. Finally i talk to someone on here with some since.

  • @kawridr6 BTBAM wouldn't be one of my top-played bands ever if it wasn't for Tommy. His cleans and growls kick ass and the lyrics are awesome.

  • what tuning are they in!! its so lowwwwww. im thinkin dropped a?

  • @xBackBurner623x Either drop D or drop A#

  • @xBackBurner623x drop G

  • Not to be a newfag or anything but is the J silent? D-yent?

  • @VideosovConnor I always thought the D was silent, hence why nowadays on every single metal video's comments somebody has to say "djentlemen".

  • @Joelisonfire its pronounced almost as if you were saying z and sh at the same time. That the best way i can think to explain itl.

  • @VideosovConnor ay dude, its like the j in jeff, orrr djeff. pronounced the same as a regular j

  • @VideosovConnor

Its the representative spelling of the sound a guitar makes when they do rhythms on open strings. Its an onomatopoeia.

djent djent dddddjent. you know, like that.

  • @VideosovConnor It's pronounced "Gent" so the D is silent.

  • @VideosovConnor It's pronounced "Jent" the D is silent.

  • @VideosovConnor The D is silent

  • this reminds me of after the burial but 5486549896487987 times better

  • effin luv this band!!! i have like every one of ther songs

  • @MistaSteelYoGirl14 thats usually what happens when you buy the album lol

  • Reaallittyyyy. Conceeeppttsss. DREEEAAAAM.

  • like the guitar alot but the vocals arent very good

  • @justyn3tears i must dissagree, his vocals give me shivers o:

  • @justyn3tears bullshit the vocals aren't very good! probably some of the best i've ever heard...

  • @bigd1594 then you obviously havent heard many metal bands vocals

  • @justyn3tears i agree, instrumental is amazing, but the vocals are kind of "poser metal" like. Thats a bad way to put it, but it sounds like those mainstream metal bands. Which sucks cause aside from the vocals, the instrumental part is amazing.

  • @reaperofgenocide no i think that is actually the perfect word to describe the vocals

its sounds like the poser metal bands out there (pierve the veil, attack attack, asking alexandria etc)

  • @justyn3tears Yeah, thats why you cant go wrong with instrumental stuff sometimes. Bands like asking alexandria are so repulsive. I find it hilarious when kids of that genre pretend to be cool or so "metal" or hardcore... its retarded

  • @reaperofgenocide ohh i soo agree like animals as leaders

    they are soo fucking amazing

i hate how all these fucking poser bands are out there and being called the metal of like this generation cause its soo much shit when there are soo many real metal bands out there i.e lamb of god, parkway drive, veil of maya, after the burial, born of osiris, as i lay dying, all that remains, chelsea grin, whitechapel

and most if the talked about stuff isnt even close to metal i.e asking alexandria

  • @justyn3tears i agree with animals as leaders being amazing. And i love alot of instrumental music metal, jazz, etc. But we do disagree one one thing, and thats music taste. Im not into lamb of god, as i lay dying, all that remains, i dont really consider them real metal but everyones going to have their own opinion. To me real metal is bathory, kalmah, death, obituary, cynic, municipal waste, quo vadis. Bands like as i lay dying and all that remains technically do remain the mainstream of metal

  • @reaperofgenocide as i lay dying isnt mainstream, neither is all that remains

  • @reaperofgenocide well i can understand you not liking them but there is no way you cant consider atleast bands like lamb of god, veil of maya, after the burial real metal

and as i lay dying and all that remains are in no way main stream metal

there are to different versions of mainstream metal 1 being bands like avenged sevenfold, five finger death punch, disturbed, slipknot where they get all the radio play ect

and 2 bands that the scene kids listen to asking alexnadria, pierce the veil ect

  • @justyn3tears well those bands to me are mainstream. Even though a7x and slipknot are way more mainstream their also different genres. Yeah as i lay dying and veil of maya are heavier, but their also very popular. You are more likely to see as i lay dying, lamb of god, and beyond the buried and me band shirts than bathory band shirts. But i mean i got friends who listen to some of those bands you like, so its not like im hating. I just got a different opinion.

  • I kind of dont like where this convo is headed cause it makes me seem like a music nazi or metal elitist. But i shouldnt even talk about "real metal"... cause i mean years ago metal was all i listened too but now a days im even listening to underground hip hop and what not.

  • @reaperofgenocide Yeah, there really isn't any one "real" metal. It's just whatever bands you like best. They're all metal, to an extent. Just matters if you enjoy listening to them or not.

  • @mansmanss Thats true i guess. What the term "real metal" deals with is the traditional metal v.s. the more popularized scene kid metal. But i mean everyones gonna have their own music taste so its no point in being a metal elitist. Cause to one person black metal is "real metal" and to another person black metal is the biggest joke on metal. All opinions.

  • @Mzral real as opposed to what?

  • @Joelisonfire hinder

  • @Joelisonfire yea no doubt I really like Periphery a lot but Meshuggah is the shit too! Plus the Swedes pretty much paved the way for math metal for the U.S. back in 90's!

  • @Mzral These guys blow that shit band out of the water. Get over yourself.

  • @Mzral

    i disagree xD

  • @Mzral so this is a fake band?

  • @Mzral Fail comment is Fail.

  • @Mzral indeed

  • Comment removed

  • a real SHITTY band.

Meshuggah has nice rhythms but they don't know shit about melody.

rhythm alone does not good music make. Periphery might sound similar, but they prove you can do those kind of rhythms while STILL being musical, and writing "real" songs.

  • @Mzral Only if you used proper spelling and actually added the "to" Between Listen and Meshuggah.

  • @motorcycler11 spelling had nothing to do with his error. I think the word you are looking for is 'grammar'

  • @Mzral Sorry dude, I'd say everyone on here listens/has listened to Meshuggah. I must have missed the disclaimer ultimatum that lies between Periphery and Meshuggah. Why does "that guy" always have to post this shit? I guess " a real man" always postz wtz on'is fuckin mind...Even if ___________...

  • @Mzral Meshuggah's a GREAT band. Don't get me wrong. But there's a place for them, and there's a place for these guys too. I've never heard Meshuggah clean up or sing, which takes just as much talent as shredding, playing intricate rhythms, and screaming. You're theory of "real" band implies that there is a universe in which fake bands exist. bands are all started for the same three reasons; expression, chicks, and / or money. Grow up.
