Thx for this quick tutorial. Just needed a reminder. Note, you can use shortcut keys to not have to go back and forth from tools to canvas. For those using CS5, the selection tool is automatically on the +. To subtract selection, press ALT and hold down, and you'll notice a "-" sign on the tool. When you let go of ALT, it goes back to +. Also, press "h" for the hand tool to scroll through zoomed image. Then press "w" for selection tool.
i wish there were some sort of SENSITIVITY (or tolerance) feature to the quick selection tool. as you demonstrated here, this tool often makes you go back and forth between adding and subtracting selected areas, because it always applies the same algorithm to select neighboring pixels. Just as the magic wand's tolerance value.
@laurapodkapova - Yes, I understand what you mean. Though I have noticed that the selection tool's sensitivity seems to get better the more you zoom into the picture. Granted, it's not a great solution, but it seems to help in some situations. :)
@atulya12345 - From the Adobe website, they say that if the quick selection tool is not shown, hold down (click on) the magic wand tool until you see the quick selection tool. Hope that helps! :)
im using photoshop cs5 in win 7 bt the quick selection tool is missing i tried to right click on the magic wand tool bt nothing happened, only magical wand tool exists,i even downloaded photoshop7 and installed it in both win 7 and my virtual pc (win XP) same prob occurs in photoshop 7 too,i dont find a quick selection tool, can i download it separately?plese help

Yes! The simplest way is, after you have the "marching ants" around the selection press CTRL+T to bring up the transform tools. Then just scale the box around the selection just like you'd resize a normal window. Once happy with the size, press ENTER and you're done.
Quick and dirty
