For me isnt so bad, the sound isnt good and i have heared top players with bad technology and they sound really bad. Yes, some passage are not perfect but even Paganini had bad days...
i think it sucks. for him. i usually is very emotionally attached to his pieces. now it sounds like he is just trying to finish it and get it over with.
I just wonder if a recording of Jelly Aranyi playing this exists--and if anyone has it--since that is whom Ravel wrote and dedicated this for..if anyone has it I would love for them to upload it
Why Russian ? He was born in Moscow but his family came to Israel when he was 1 year old and Hebrew is his mother tongue. Antisemitic Russia drives its jews out but then capitalizes on them if they are successful
I'm not sure where all the negative criticism comes from. His attacks are percussive but not overly so and they probably project the accentuation to the back of the hall far better than the less agressive attacks you all seem to be calling for.
I admire Shlomo for his playing. He could however improve on his bowing as already mentioned by ThouArtMad. He is using too much pressure at certain points which does not contribute to a colorful tone but makes the sound gritty and harsh.
@duhhh86 Well, the most important thing is the playing itself, not the recording quality (for example, Oistrakh always recorded under the worst circumstance, especially in Russia, but he made his music so great). Maybe he didn't practice very hard... Everyone can get worse...everyone... there is no exception.
This piece is not intended to be played with sweetness or even especially smooth. Take a listen to Kogan's version. Ravel explored and experimented with texture. This is supposed to have a very modern, futuristic sound. He was good friends with Francescatti who was one of the first to play this for Ravel who also plays it quite in the same fashion. He is playing it EXACTLY as Ravel intended it.
Shlomo I generally admire, although this excerpt demonstrates a habit of his which could improve, namely, using short amount of bow with lots of pressure, producing a short squeeky squelch, a rounded squeal of pert grittiness, which perhaps he likes, but from the audience or microphone's perspective, it does not produce a full sustained singing tone. Videos of Heifetz, Oistrakh, Perlman, etc., demonstrate use of full bow where others use less, with resulting melodious, colorful, carrying tone.
This is really painfull, he was such a great talent! He should really stop playing the violin! He is producing weared noise not music anymore! Why...?
His interpretation of this song may not be the best, but you must account for how the violinist feels at the time of playing and his past experiences for such difficult music.
He is now older, so creating such energy is mostlikly more difficult. This isn't such a bad recording, but accenting everything and hitting the notes may not be everyone's personal choice in music. He is Russian, so his interpretation will definately be different since russians like to rush things. :P
Oh my God, so sad how he playes today! He sounded so great when he was younger! And now...? Is it a Juilliard thing? So many violinists got ruined there! I´m just speechless, when I hear him today!
Wow. I must say, after hearing his early Paganini recordings, this man certainly has all but lost it. Not only is he technically no where near on par, but musically this Ravel seems simply imbalanced, even a somewhat jerky, nerved up performance to me. He lost all of his early effortlessness. He looks considerably older here from what I can see. Almost a bit like (but not as drastic a fall) Yehudi Menuhin nose dive.
He's my favourite viiolinist.. he played in my country 2 days ago, and i've seen it =D he played the max bruch concert and a beethoven romanza, and a bis (caprice nro5 paganini)
mintz has always been one of my favorite violinists
he wasnt russian, he was from israel and had the same teacher as zukerman i think her name was ilona feher if i remember correctly i cant remember, he was brought to america to study with delay at a young age

He needs to take lessons from a good violin player to correct his bowing technique.

lol...the "gritty" sound seems to me to be due to the recording quality...
