I was lucky enough to have seen this show live in San Francisco with Douglas Sills on the National Tour. We thought his understudy might be performing for him as this was an early matinee the day after a late show. Needless to say we were THRILLED to learn that the man himself would be performing. Luckier still, we were sitting right by the aisle that he runs down at the end to confront Chauvelin. He was so close I could've touched him! But yeah, SUCH an amazing show!
really like the Percy in this one. Felt it was very inspiring that he was willing to do whatever it took. Now best Percy of all time is Anthony Andrews with Jane Seymour in the film production though Douglas Sills is the best Percy for the musical. Saw this 10 years ago, and I'm still gagging to see it again.
@redbaroncrowley. Douglas Sills is one of the greatest stage performers in my opinion. Do you know anyone who can run all the way from downstage to upstage, climb up stairs, and still hold a G#4 with perfection? You sir are an idiot. I mean, you can not honestly watch this, and say that someone you know is better. That's like saying Johnny Depp was a better Sweeney than George Hearn. It's simply foolish.
@snoopyluvr123 You're pretty much my new best friend for pointing out the George Hearn/Johnny Depp Sweeney Todd comparison. Believe it or not, I know people who say Johnny is better than George.
This is the first clip I've seen of the Scarlet Pimpernel, is it a good musical? I'm starting to look into it, I LOVE Sweeney Todd and Jekyll & Hyde, I've heard this compared with the two....
Since you posted the comment you've no doubt learned more about the musical. But the Scarlet Pimpernel is much more light-hearted than the other musicals you mentioned. Yeah, there are more moments where it gets dark. But overall, the tone is lighter. When I want to listen to something that's fun and not so dark, I listen to the Scarlet Pimpernel.
@snoopyluvr123 I agree with you completely on Sills. Why Sills is not working?idk However, I can't agree with you regarding Depp-Hearns. Hearns is one of the worst over-actors to step foot on a professional stage. He eats the scene and peep still love him and to me thats amazing, esp given the fact that he is held in such high regard. As for Depp, although his singing was nothing to call home about, I would take his subtle forms of expression over Hearns' irrritating cries any day of the week
Wow. Our local production ruined me. All i could think about through half of that was how much better our percy was (this was still good, but our percy was bloody amazing)
Chills galore- this man is awesome- absolutely powerful beautiful unrestrained talent the likes of which I do not believe we will see even unto the end of this age.

My father played the CD quite often,( i am not sure if it was the original or encore version) but Imagine if one day this song were sung with full out passion and anger. It would be truly inspiring.
I love this show so much! The first time I heard this song, for some reason I wanted to say, "Put your head in the fire and burn off an eye or a nose." I don't know why, but it works musically.
this is an awesome play. my favorite. i saw it a couple years ago and i got the CD so i could listen to the music and i watched most f the movies but none of them were as good as the musical.
I can't imagine Percy from the books referring to his "pampered British ass". That Percy would never seem to apologize in any way for being upperclass nor would he express any guilt whatsoever for being an aristocrat, though he was a perfect gentleman full of "noblesse oblige" and compassion for those in need. That line in the show makes the character seem more likeable, but it just irks me a bit because it doesn't seem in character at all.
The Persona of Percy's you seem to be referring to is an act Percy put's on to hide his identity. The biggest difference between the book and muscial, is that the book does not allow us to see any aspect of Percy other than the foppish lazy nobleman until very late in the book. And even then he is 'off--screen' heading into a trap. For most of the book Percy is playing a role. The musical on the other hand shows what happens behind the scenes in the book.
I hear what you're saying, but I always saw the "real" Percy as someone who saw his upperclass status as something that obligated him to help others rather than as something to feel guilty about . Talking derisively about sitting around on "pampered asses" sounds like something a revolutationary would say, and we know how Orczy felt about the Fr Revolution (mobs "human only in name"). The play's touchy feely, highly emotional-sounding Percy might be more appealing to some, but seems off to me.
This number is so amazing no matter what production. Douglas Sills just makes it amazing. A lot of this show is bad, and the music is poor (lol Frank Wildhorn), but damn do I rock out to this song and Falcon in the Dive. No lie.
Damn, he can hold that note. Douglas Sills, is and always will be the Scarlet Pimpernel. No matter what anyone else says, he is the Scarlet Pimpernel. GO DOUG!
The most perfect Broadway musical! Action, adventure, love, drama, laughter! Douglas Sills WAS and IS the Scarlet Pimpernel! Terrance Mann & Christine Andreas were fabulous! This play needs to be brought back! Especially with those 3 leads!

I love the musical. I have both cds, one is Original Cast and also the Encore cd. I constantly play either one. :)
I seen the 1930's Scarlet Pimpernel with Leslie Howard and also have read most of the books.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us. :)
