  • from where do you get the wood `?

  • I get a lot from friends who know I turn.

  • I guess you have done this before =D

  • Once or twice. :)

  • Very nice Carl, I have watched this many times and I keep refering back. Thank you for doing these.

  • Thanks, Boxes are my favorite things to turn.

  • i love the hat!

    life IS good :)

  • Yes it is :)

  • Thank you,

  • Very nice video, I enjoy watching you turn. Thank you for doing it.

  • Thank you

  • I have always sanded at slower speeds and I go all the way to 600 grit paper. From 120 or 180 to 600. I have not tried pen wax. I typically like the satin finish that paste wax provides on most things.

    Thank alot.

    Carl

  • hey carl could you make a bigger one of these just to get an idea, i have a peace of purple heart about 7inches wide and 3 inches tall i would appreciate it thank you

  • I'll try after Christmas.

  • i want it iwant it iwant it man that pease is fucking buitiful

  • Nice work Carl. What lathe are you using?

  • Thanks, I have a Delta.

  • Carl

I enjoy all your videos, made a couple of the spalted maple boxes you did. My question is, do you always use that wax for your finishes? Don't last long enough in my opinion. Also, why use a hacksaw to part off your turning? Nice work and keep them coming. Mitterxyz

  • Mitch,

Most of the time, I sand with the wax to cut down on the dust. I use a hacksaw to save on material when I am doing a box lid or other project that is separated.

    Thanks,

    Carl

  • do you buy your chunks of wood or obtain them, you do a great job

  • I do buy some wood but I get a lot of my wood off the beach.

    Thanks,

    Carl

  • thank you

  • Great video for a newbie like myself...very easy to follow. I really like the way you fashioned the lid.

  • Thanks!

  • Hi - you have mentioned that you use paste wax and mineral oil - do you mix this yourself, if so, what ratio of each do you use?

  • I mix it myself 10 to 1

  • Hi, thanks for the videos, your a massive inspiration! probably better than any books live looked through! By mineral oil do you mean turps, or parafin etc? Not sure what its called over in here in England! cheers man@haydenHD

  • Hi,

Mineral oil is an oil you get at the pharmacy I mix it with the paste wax.

    Thanks,

    Carl

  • its amazing i have no words for this:)

  • Thanks,

  • Is that just an ordinary chizel you use at one point! Thanks!

  • Hi

I'm not sure at what point in the video you are talking about but they are all standard chisel.

    Thanks

    Carl

  • Hi guys. Im a young turner from the uk, i engoy turning bowls and goblets, even done segment work. but when it comes to boxes i can never get a flwing shape from the lid to the box. Do you have any tips on getting the right shape? also what tool were u using after you roughed it down to get the initial shape? thanks.

  • Hi,

Richard Raffan has a good book on box turning that I read years ago it helped a lot with shape and form it would be a good place to start. I have not seen a lot of videos on box turning on the Internet.

The tool I use to shape the box is a 1/2 in fingernail gouge. Thanks!

  • great thanks alot, i'll have to look in to it.

  • Very nice video!

One question: how did you know the lid would exactly fit? Did you just leave a little bit extra on the box part and then turn it to the diameter of the lid? Cause if you turn it too much the lid will fit too loosely and that would be the end of the lid... Right?

  • Thanks!

Yes you leave the tenon for the lid a little big and after you part off the lid turn it down to the diameter of the lid. You can always take off material you can't put it back on.

  • Hi Hayden

I have tried the Bees wax and I am very pleased,

it works well also I made a box using your method

for the lid and I think it is better than the way I do it.

    Many thanks.

Looking forward to your next video

  • Dennis,

Thanks, try mineral oil it works better and it's alot less expensive it is a little messy but it works great. I put it in a can and dip the sand paper in it.

  • Very nice box and a video that you can see what is happening brilliant but I would like to know what you are putting on the sandpaper and why.

  • Hi Dennis,

I am putting bees wax or paste wax on the sandpaper. It is used to keep the sandpaper clean and cut down on sanding dust. I use mineral oil alot for the same purpose, but it was spraying up on the camera lense and we cannot have that. Thanks for watching and I will keep posting videos.
