The music is "Balin's tomb," not the Ring theme. It is one of the most hauntingly beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. Someone has put it up as stand-alone music as "moria and balin's tomb"
May someone please help me what the music piece is called during this scene. You know the calming, quiet, beautiful soundtrack cued after Frodo saying, "I wish the ring has never come to me..."
Straight from Tolkien. Even though the books weren't replicated directly into the movies, it's the parts like these that made it. And these parts count the most in my opinion.
By far the most touching and awesome scene in any movie. PERIOD. If everyone who saw this movie took the message of gandalfs monologue here to heart, the world would be a very different place.

"So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. " A quote of biblical terms!! Thanks you Tolkien for Gandalf!
I still use this quote to encourage myself and others that life moves on as so should humanity when dark times fall upon us. Speaking of....I think it's time for another adventure :)
I saw the LotR movies when they came out years ago, but I didn't remember anything from them. I didn't care about my future, I just stayed at home eating and watching tv. Two months ago I saw this clip and it made me think about my life. I started working out and eat more healthy. I started studying hard and got accepted to University.
I am amazed how a combination of words spoken by a fictional character can make me change my life to the better.
"So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us" its inspiring :)
When one finally realizes that there is a purpose--a will, a personality--to the universe...
When one finally realizes that, despite our pride in the stone knives and bear skins of our most advanced science, we are but one fool blind man touching an elephant the size of which our primitive instruments can't even measure..
..then and only then we finally are open to the most profound wisdom dramatized in this scene.
i'm just gonna pretend the ppl who disliked this were foreign and didn't understand a single word.. no wait.. how the fuck did they know which button to press?!
The Lord of the Rings is a beautiful story unlike any other. It forces us to see and understand that life is never easy and there will always be darkness but if we just keep holding on and keep going it will be worth it in the end. It took JRR Tolken 12 years or so to wright this story and thats why I think the morals of this story are the most remarkable. Peter Jackson also did a fantastic job of making this story into a film while still respecting the original books. May LOTR live on forever!
@waterbender17 I hate to play devil's advocate, I agree with your comment, just wanted to say I think Tolkien's ultimate message was that we are all flawed and we can (and will) succumb to evil/sin of enough magnitude. Frodo was the purest of them all and even he gave in to the Ring.
@timmyz55 Although Frodo did offer Aragorn to take the ring. And he was able to resist the urge to take it for his own because he knew what it would do to him as the ring is most powerful over the hearts of men. Or at least thats the way it was intended when Sauron made it.
''many that live deserve death. some that die deserve life. can you give it them (frodo)? do not be to eager to deal out death and judgement'' this is wisdom.
@floooooooooooooooood he was terrified but there was a part when he had put the ring on and he was about to try to kill golumn but when he looked at the sad creature weeping and argueing with itself he felt pity for him and let him be.
"Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death, and some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement." ---
"I wish the ring had never come to me...I wish none of this had ever happened."
"So do all who live to see such times, but that is not up to them to decide. All we can do is decide what to do with the time that is given to us." <3 These two quotes apply to all of our lives. Such great writing.-tear-
I remember seeing this back when the movie was released in Nov 2001, when 9/11 was still raw in everyone's consciousness. The moment Frodo uttered it, a collective gasp of grief and loss rose from the audience, followed by tears at Gandalf's response.
One of the greatest lines... ever. That and "Every man dies; not every man really lives," from Braveheart. And "What we do in life echoes in eternity," from Gladiator.
This always brings tears to my eyes. The world is a mess, the West is in decline, and I often times find myself in despair, envying the dead, as they no longer have to worry over the problems of this world. But then I remember...
"So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil."
And so did Gollum indeed play a vital part in the end of the Quest. I won't like to crash the ending, but Gandalf's wisdom shines ever prominent as the trilogy draws to a satisfying conclusion :)
Even this one scene of dialogue gives me the shivers. I genuinely believe there was no one greater than Sir Ian in existence for this role, he really speaks a universal truth and reminds us of our place when we say we wish someone was dead. Pointy hats off to you Gandalf.
For all those in these times who volunteer to charge into battle for leaders not willing to do the same. For those who stand behind leaders who create penalties of death. All of us who exercise indifference, HEED these words: and some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.
Peace to you all, but Gandalf is a fictional character whose words come from JRR Tolkien's mind. The movies are a product of movie writers, not Tolkien, and are faint whispers of the books. Originally Gandalf discloses Gollum's name right after Frodo sees the ring's fire writing way back at Bag End, page 78 of The Fellowship! Only a scant 7 pages later does TOLKIEN'S beautiful words come out. Have your fun, excitement, and passion, but be a little better informed perhaps?
@viggyology Yes, we have all read the books, and know the movie script is different... but we can still like this quote from the movie, and enjoy the films.... believe me I am one of the biggest fan of the books, but still show repect for the movies.
i just used the first part of this quote when talking a good friend out of suicide, after they questioned why there are here..it went pretty great. shes alive, i swear thanks to this quote. thank you Gandalf, you save even the most peculiar of folk :)
i really really love this quote, both messages are just awesome, the films are my favorite and the books are amazing as well. what about tom bombadil though, i know the wizards sauron etc were maiar aka "servents" of the anuir, but what was tom?
@hbp555 Tom is a mystery. Someone told me Tolkien needed to put the character in the story but he never really explained who he is. There´s a rumour I heard which says that he might possibly be Eru disguised. According to Robert Foster´s Complete Guide to Middle-earth, the explanation goes: "probably a Maia".
I can't believe you people can turn Lord of the Rings into a debate about American standards... like that hasn't been discussed on Youtube 1million times.
when shitty stuff from the past crosses my mind and stops me in my tracks I think of this quote and it helps so much :) probably also helps that i have the 'i wish the ring had never come to me/all we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us' bit written on my wall haha but yanno. great scene from the best series of films ever made
I love this scene so much. The acting, the score, the feeling all of it evokes in me. That may sound cheesy to some, but these movies and books are so magnificent and other wordly. I love them.
I love so mutch this 3 films, I really think that they will remain in cinema history forever, not for the special effects, but for the beautiful message they send, the great actors that were in this amazing project and the passion that everyone who worked for this movies put into them :)
when frodo is about to leave the rest of the fellowship in the first movie, he envisions Gandalf saying this quote to him. but when he envisions this, instead of Gandalf saying, "all WE have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to US," Gandalf says, "all YOU have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to YOU."
@TheNarniaFreak It is an encouraging thought that precisely he, Frodo, should get the Ring. There is purpose behind it that he does not understand yet, but that someone greater, call it God or whoever created us, knows very well. It means that he was trusted to do the task because he was apparently the only one that could do it successfully...and that is an encouraging thought. It means in the end it must all end well.
"And that is an encouraging thought." Really? The thought of having a Ring that could destroy the whole world and make you mad is ENCOURAGING?? That's one thing I don't get about Gandalf.
This scene may not seem so important in the movie, because in the book the ending is a bit different.
Here Frodo throws himself into Mount Doom together with Gollum.
In the book Gollum bites of Frodo's finger, then jumps around in joy with the ring and finally slips and falls in lava.
If there would be no Gollum, Frodo would have taken the ring for himself at the end just so he could be pwned by the Nazgul when he would try to escape.
@xmaster117 Which movie did you watch? This series ends with Frodo deciding to not throw the ring into the fire, then Gollum biting off his finger, and taking the ring. Then they fight over it and Gollum and the ring fall in the lava. In the movie it was still Gollum that caused the ring to fall into the fire.
@hosfelt Yes but in the book Frodo lays on the ground while Golum dances around and then losses his balance and that's the end of him.
In the movie Frodo gets pissed off after getting his finger torn off and starts brawling with Golum resulting in both of them falling over except one thing I'm not sure of is if Frodo grabbed Golum because he wanted to get the ring back from him or because he got his mind right and decided to end it once and for all.
@JugglingHobbit Well in the movie it's all intense and kaboom and then it looks like Frodo will give up and fall, but Sam gets to be a hero and then they run from the lava...
I've read the book after watching the film and I admit I felt like there was something missing.
@xmaster117 Elijah Wood said it was because he wanted the Ring back. I liked the Mt. Doom scene better in the movies, what with Frodo going over the edge and all. ;)
Wish the people wishing death for Casey Anthony would see this video. Guilty or not, wishing death and pain on someone else makes them no better than the killer they accuse her to be.
@mrbrockpeters No. Murderers deserve to die. Why should she be set free when her daughter is rotting six feet below? How is this fair? It's called justice, and it hasn't been served this time.
@mrbrockpeters get real. don't compare casey anthony with gollum ffs. funny, most of the people that defend that disgusting human, are men. get some standards. those 2 funbags that mesmerized you are falling to her knees. google casey anthony back tattoo, zits, back fat & all. enjoy. btw- this is a lotr vid, not a casey anthony one.
@addendum044 Der, I no think you look much into English if you, der, can't get passed your own set-in-stone ideology, derp, because guess what? This is a very humanistic quote, regardless of Tolkien's inspiration. Besides, it's not like the Right these days is not what it used to be. In fact, I think the man would laugh wholeheartedly on what the conservative ideology has brought to the world. /rant
We have this beautiful, beautiful quote about justice, pity, life and death... and then we have two comments earnestly discussing the sexual orientation of fictional wizards.
Well, on the TV show "How I Met Your Mother," Neil Patrick Harris is gay in reality, but not on the show. Gandalf's actor (Ian McKellen) is gay and the fact that the character's sexuality is not written anywhere is not enough to assume that the character is meant to be gay. Also, the books were NEVER meant to be made into movies, so the actor has nothing to do with the character's sexuality. Anyway, he's probably straight because I'm sure that Tolkien wouldn't make him gay for no reason.
What an incredibly poignant moment...and the quote couldn't be truer. I found these movies emotionally, intensely cathartic.

@viggyology Yes, we have all read the books, and know the movie script is different... but we can still like this quote from the movie, and enjoy the films.... believe me I am one of the biggest fan of the books, but still show repect for the movies.

i really really love this quote, both messages are just awesome, the films are my favorite and the books are amazing as well. what about tom bombadil though, i know the wizards sauron etc were maiar aka "servents" of the anuir, but what was tom?
hbp555 5 months ago
@hbp555 Tom is a mystery. Someone told me Tolkien needed to put the character in the story but he never really explained who he is. There´s a rumour I heard which says that he might possibly be Eru disguised. According to Robert Foster´s Complete Guide to Middle-earth, the explanation goes: "probably a Maia".

I can't believe you people can turn Lord of the Rings into a debate about American standards... like that hasn't been discussed on Youtube 1million times.
Momentum139 5 months ago
when shitty stuff from the past crosses my mind and stops me in my tracks I think of this quote and it helps so much :) probably also helps that i have the 'i wish the ring had never come to me/all we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us' bit written on my wall haha but yanno. great scene from the best series of films ever made
blindedbythesilence8 5 months ago
I love this scene so much. The acting, the score, the feeling all of it evokes in me. That may sound cheesy to some, but these movies and books are so magnificent and other wordly. I love them.

when frodo is about to leave the rest of the fellowship in the first movie, he envisions Gandalf saying this quote to him. but when he envisions this, instead of Gandalf saying, "all WE have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to US," Gandalf says, "all YOU have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to YOU."

I think it is in these quieter, well-acted scenes where the LOTR-movies really shines. Wonderful acting, dialogue and music...

Its so badass how you can apply so much of this to your life. Like, the ring I compare to Opium.
Oriente7 7 months ago
This scene may not seem so important in the movie, because in the book the ending is a bit different.
Here Frodo throws himself into Mount Doom together with Gollum.
In the book Gollum bites of Frodo's finger, then jumps around in joy with the ring and finally slips and falls in lava.
If there would be no Gollum, Frodo would have taken the ring for himself at the end just so he could be pwned by the Nazgul when he would try to escape.
Although I find the movie ending better.
xmaster117 7 months ago
@xmaster117 Which movie did you watch? This series ends with Frodo deciding to not throw the ring into the fire, then Gollum biting off his finger, and taking the ring. Then they fight over it and Gollum and the ring fall in the lava. In the movie it was still Gollum that caused the ring to fall into the fire.
hosfelt 6 months ago
@hosfelt Yes but in the book Frodo lays on the ground while Golum dances around and then losses his balance and that's the end of him.
In the movie Frodo gets pissed off after getting his finger torn off and starts brawling with Golum resulting in both of them falling over except one thing I'm not sure of is if Frodo grabbed Golum because he wanted to get the ring back from him or because he got his mind right and decided to end it once and for all.
xmaster117 6 months ago
@xmaster117
yup its not quite the same
like the book better....
JugglingHobbit 6 months ago
@JugglingHobbit Well in the movie it's all intense and kaboom and then it looks like Frodo will give up and fall, but Sam gets to be a hero and then they run from the lava...
I've read the book after watching the film and I admit I felt like there was something missing.
xmaster117 6 months ago
@xmaster117 Elijah Wood said it was because he wanted the Ring back. I liked the Mt. Doom scene better in the movies, what with Frodo going over the edge and all. ;)

Wish the people wishing death for Casey Anthony would see this video. Guilty or not, wishing death and pain on someone else makes them no better than the killer they accuse her to be.
mrbrockpeters 7 months ago 27
@mrbrockpeters No. Murderers deserve to die. Why should she be set free when her daughter is rotting six feet below? How is this fair? It's called justice, and it hasn't been served this time.

@mrbrockpeters get real. don't compare casey anthony with gollum ffs. funny, most of the people that defend that disgusting human, are men. get some standards. those 2 funbags that mesmerized you are falling to her knees. google casey anthony back tattoo, zits, back fat & all. enjoy. btw- this is a lotr vid, not a casey anthony one.

That's not the point of what Gandalf says at all... Please don't try and inject your left wing views into a traditionalist writer like Tolkien.
addendum044 5 months ago
@addendum044 Der, I no think you look much into English if you, der, can't get passed your own set-in-stone ideology, derp, because guess what? This is a very humanistic quote, regardless of Tolkien's inspiration. Besides, it's not like the Right these days is not what it used to be. In fact, I think the man would laugh wholeheartedly on what the conservative ideology has brought to the world. /rant
