85 dB can damage hearing when exposed for a looooong time... lawn mowers are 90++dB loud and no one cares about that. Train horns aren't emitting 90dB... they are something about 150dB, just like the K5LA or K3LA set. I shot firearms a lot of times and they're way louder than a train horn I wasn't ever equipped with hearing protection at any time... no harm done to my ears.

Oh and one thing... train horns are far from unreasonably loud :) "Fuck them and their law!"
