Very good film, remarkable game and psychological experiences of the protagonist. In Russia this film practically didn't show. The first time has seen it in 1987 and any more there was no it on screens. I consider such film as genre classics. On coast of the big river of Volga in the city of Samara this film know and remember.
Although i watched the whole movie, I found it a little difficult for me to watch 'cause of its pacing. I guess it has something to do with my generation's attention span. lol.
But I really liked how the film makes you really think about its concepts and what it can do to people.
And yes like someone said in previous post, the hotel scene did scared the crap out of me too.
I have seen this movie and to be honest I really do not understand why it is such a good movie but maybe it is not my generation? I dunno... anyways for me it was just ok nothing amazing.
@TheRocketSilo wasn't enough to justify the other 2 hours promising but failing to deliver anything remotely interesting :( Those scenes were like someone waking you up to tell you the phone rang but it was a wrong number
These older films are always better than the trailers. Making trailers has become an art today, back then the corny voiceovers ruin the whole thing for younger audiences checking these older classics out.
such a great film. one of the best american films from the last "golden age" of american filmmaking. it's surprising what a lousy trailer the studio made for it.
I regret to say that this movie hasn't held up well. It's a critics' darling, but so much of it smacks of film student shallowness. There's lots of empty rhetoric regarding Harry Caul's Catholic morality, his reluctance to destroy the Virgin Mary statuette that he thinks might be bugged, etc. The whole movie plays like a Scorsese flick at the wrong speed, and it goes on and on and on, getting nowhere fast.
@bsharpinLondon Actually, that footage is from the actual movie. You might not have noticed it, since it does contradict the storyline, but it's there.
I wish the trailer had included a crucial line uttered by Hackman's character- "I'm not afraid of death...but I am afraid of murder" A difficult film to watch, but it's brilliant! Probably more essential and relevant today than when it first came out.
this movie is as interesting as watching paint dry in slow motion....i don't see the "importance" of it....other than being painfully boring to the point it hurts to watch.
I saw this fairly recently and it's become one of my all time favorite films. Truly amazing. Does anyone know why the hell it's not avaliable to buy on DVD?
Great movie! It's interesting how this trailer was made...it's misleading.
SPOILER ALERT
At 1;23 it shows Cindy Williams being attacked by Duval. That's what the film leads us to think will happen. Truth is, that scene does not pan out that way at all. I don't know of another trailer that includes the use of footage that not only is not in the movie, but contradicts the actual movie line
Actually, that shot is in the film, when Harry briefly imagines what he thinks is happening. Smart use of the footage in the trailer so as not to tip it for the audience.
No problem. Sounds like you do know it. It's a quick shot. They were better then about not giving movies away in the trailers; they show too much now. I love how this movie examines perception, privacy, and paranoia. My favorite Coppola. I got to meet Murch -- a true gentleman -- last year and ask him to sign a lobby card. A thrill.
You bet! I've seen it a dozen times. It's one of the all time greats as far as I'm concerned. I first saw it in the cinema about 30 years ago and found it very disturbing then. It still packs a punch today. The music and the sound are brilliant. Sound editor: Walter Murch, who did a lot of work with Coppola. A real genius and a very interesting guy too. I went to a lecture at the NFT once with Murch, and realised then just how much this film owes to him.
Absolutely. Gene Hackman's picture I.D. in EOTS is photo from the conversation a clear wink to this movie. Jerry & friends just made an updated version of this Coppola classic
The piano track is called THEME from THE CONVERSATION and you can get the CD online from INTRADA. Rare CD. It is by David Shire (Zodiac - also a great soundtrack)
we know that you know Mr.Caul..for your own sake don't get involved any further..we'll be listening to you!
i love this movie..it's so eirie and mysterious,yet entertaining...even if"Shirley Feenie"..aka Cindy Williams(LAVERNE AND SHIRLEY) is up to something sinister!.. a 10/10.
