If you do a certain quest that involves him, sadly he won't smile anymore. I did it once. I loaded the game and never did that quest again, because his demeanor and lines are so much better when he's happy! Plus when he says "Yes, human?" instead of "Hello there! Welcome to Morlan's Famous Shop!" it sounds like you have disappointed him. I can't do that to this guy. I often returned to his store just to hear him say the same lines, lol. Part of the comedy is not knowing why his shop is famous.
He just went into the stat files and copy and pasted Garrus' code over the john shepard one, so restart the game and choose new profile and quick start and you play as garrus. Works for all other NPC's, except ones like Joker with no walk animation, so they just float around.
