  • Hey YouTube...does anyone know what raag is used primarily in this composition...Is it Darbari?....cheers...

  • @MrRushabhT Yes it is Darbari only

  • Imagining this as the background score when I'm in the exam hall XD ARR FTW!!!

  • simply fantabulous!

  • Amazing. I'm dancing for this song in an indo-western theme.

  • can you people like 123Veru stop using profanity... we r talking n listening to divinity here...i dont see a point in so much of hatred present on online communities

  • My cat's name is Raaga XD

  • RAHMANISM

  • wow...wow!!!!!

  • pls try listening to this sundtrack...

Study for Violin-How to Name it

  • @mahenlogan1 i loved iitm-how to name it from ir...wow mesmerising

  • It's so simple - there are only two themes running around - but the way it is twisted, convoluted, and pulled and stretched around, results in probably one of the most memorable music around. It's not beautiful music; it's divine music.

  • Words can't express how this song touches me. A great Singapore violinist and AR Rahman adds beautiful Indian influences to what is a beautiful modern day masterpiece, imho.

  • simply marvelous!

  • the music at 2:31 makes your hair stand up on its end and salute the musical genius.

  • brilliant!!

  • To all of you who are debating as to what sort of music this is.....

It is simply music - I'm sure we can agree on that :-) Also, music cannot be labelled, it is simply influenced. Take an old Tamil song... back then they were all based on carnatic raagas, but the words didn't always correlate to religion.

Look for the universal - we've disputer over differences enough.

Just had to put my two cents worth out there.

  • awsomeness !!

  • Two words: Beautiful Music

  • Love the way the song begins and slowly reaches a crescendo.... ARR is a master of such music... Totally mesmerizing...

  • tempo was built like the rangeela dance music on the beach, but instead of middle eastern beat karnataka raag formed the base

  • Start run dont look back,,,,,just run with ARR and Vanessa........as far as u can....gogogo this how i feeling.....one more time, one more time

  • amazing............hez realy god of music

  • venessa my favorite

  • xXBlackxRebelXx, I still disagree. In my view, an instrumental song without any lyrics cannot be associated with any religion. You can call "Chaiyya Chaiyya" an "Islamic" song because the lyrics deal with Islam. You can call many other Bollywood devotional songs "Hindu" music because the lyrics deal with Hinduism. But "Raaga's Dance" has no lyrics! It's not "Islamic" because it was composed by a Muslim, nor is it "Hindu" because of Carnatic influence, nor is it "Christian" because of the violin.

  • @xX.......: u r a freaky moron

  • Good HINDU music.

  • Excellent music !!!!!!!

  • i didnt think vanessa mae and rahman would go well together but i was obviously wrong... this is beautiful and amazing!

  • Vanessa Mae is playing Carnatic music!

  • Amazing !!!! Out of the world

  • DARBARI !!! KOOL !!!!

  • AMAZING! TRULY TALENTED PEOPLE!

  • My heart always races when i listen to this song,i am so in love with it,i always go into my own world when i listen to it and its like so many images and thoughts come to my mind its hard to explain.

  • amazing!!!!

    wow!

how come i never know this kind of music exist in this world. current western music is nothing compare to this music.

  • @xXBlackxRebelXx

"Hindu" music? Firstly, "Raaga's Dance" was composed by A. R. Rahman, who is a Muslim, not a Hindu. And secondly, "Raaga's Dance" has some obvious Arabic influence, in addition to the more obvious Indian influence. Why not simply call it Indian music instead?

  • @Jagged85 "Firstly, "Raaga's Dance" was composed by A. R. Rahman, who is a Muslim, not a Hindu"

so? I call a fucking spade a fucking spade. What you do is what you do. And what it is, is what it is. If I play sufi music, I play sufi music. And sufi music is expression of music in accordance to muslim traditions. So that means when I play sufi music, I play muslim music.

  • @xXBlackxRebelXx Carnatic music is Hindu expression of music in accordance to Hindu traditions. So the music in this video is almost completely Hindu.

"And secondly, "Raaga's Dance" has some obvious Arabic influence"

oh really? and which part exactly? the part that vannessa mae plays is 100% carnatic.

  • @xXBlackxRebelXx

Exactly. It's only Vannessa Mae's violin playing that is entirely based on Carnatic music, but that's about it. The bass sounds running in the background from 0:56 onwards is most definitely from Arabic music and has almost no resemblance to Carnatic music.

  • @Jagged85

"It's only Vannessa Mae's violin playing that is entirely based on Carnatic music, but that's about it."

    this whole song is Carnatic.

"onwards is most definitely from Arabic music and has almost no resemblance to Carnatic music"

    no it isnt.

  • @xXBlackxRebelXx

No, the whole song is not Carnatic. The bassline is from Arabic music, while there are also some Western classical influences as well.

To most ordinary listeners, the heavy bassline sounds far more like Arabic music rather than Carnatic music. Considering how Rahman has incorporated Arabic music in many of his songs, it shouldn't be a surprise at all for him to do the same here.

  • @xXBlackxRebelXx

That's just stupid. Sufi music is not a style of music, but a devotional tradition that can refer to any style of music devoted to Sufi beliefs. You can only call it "Islamic music" if the song itself is religious devotional music dedicated to the religion. The same goes for "Hindu music". The thought of a Muslim producing Hindu devotional music, or vice-versa, is nonsensical. That's not calling a spade a spade, but more like calling a spade a banana.

  • @Jagged85 clearly you are too stupid to grasp the point being made here, so I shall keep this short and simple. If you blow from a trumphet, the sound that is produced from the trumphet is a trumphet. it doesnt matter who blows it.

sufi music refers to the instruments and style of music that is unique to sufism, a sect within islam that permits and often uses music. sufi music per se here means just that, period. when other styles of music are to be used is irrelevant.

  • @xXBlackxRebelXx

That's a silly analogy. All you're doing is trying to find the origins of the trumpet, completely ignoring the fact that the modern trumpet has evolved far beyond the original primitive trumpets of ancient times. In logical terms, you are committing a genetic fallacy.

There is no distinct style of Sufi music. It can refer to any style of music devoted to Sufi Islamic beliefs. Since Indian Sufi music has Indian influences, that must make it "Hindu" music according to you.

  • @Jagged85 Definitely the Sufi music of Pakistan has Hindu influences mainly mainstream Bhakti styles.

  • @xXBlackxRebelXx so then since a.r rahman is tamil, it shud be called tamil music? dont u think so retard. shut the fuck up and jus listen to song peacefully

  • "Why not simply call it Indian music instead?"

Go find your own "Indian" music. Maybe some jungly bhils or gonds smacking sticks together. Or some nagas stomping their feets.

My culture is my culture. My carnatic culture is not the same as muslim mongrelized hindustani culture. Its Hindu music called Carnatic.

I'll call what is what, as precisely what it is. And this is Hindu music. So you can fuck off.

  • @xXBlackxRebelXx

No, Carnatic music is not "Hindu music", in the same way Arabic music is not "Islamic music".

And don't worry, I'm not interested in fucking you.

  • @Jagged85 Carnatic music isnt "Indian" music. It is Indo European mainly. But it was developed for the sole purpose of expressing Hindu devotion through music. Clearly you know nothing about Carnatic music. Every single detail about it has references to Hindu theology.

Of course that doesnt mean only Hindus can perform or appreciate it. But that doesnt negate the fact that it is, what it simply is.

  • @xXBlackxRebelXx

"Indo European"? Carnatic music was largely developed in the Dravidian-speaking areas of South India, not the "Indo-European" speaking areas of North India.

  • @Jagged85 Lets not go there even. Its irrelevant where it was developed. The Brahmins speak Sanskrit, even the ones in Dravidian-speaking South India. The same is true for the music they produced. That is, Carnatic.

If theres any aboriginal Indian music that can even speak of, its perhaps that of the isolated adivasi communities.

Indians have a largely Aryanized language and culture.

  • @Jagged85

Dravidian languages of South India have heavy Aryan influence. Tamil has the least of them all but still much of their classical literature has Aryanization. The Brahmin sage Agastya/Agathiyar and Thiruvalluvar contributed to the Tamil language.

In the Thirukkural of Thiruvalluvar the first is "matha pitha guru deivam"

"Matar". "Pitar", "Guru" and "Deva" these are all Sanskrit words with European counterparts not Dravidian whatsoever..

  • @xXBlackxRebelXx Could you please mention which kural has "matha pitha guru deivam", i think non of them. The sanskrit influence came later. not in thirukural

  • @Jagged85

There is some non-Indo European influences in Carnatic but still it is almost exactly the same as Indo European Iranian music without the Semitic/Arabic/Islamic elements.

  • @Jagged85 Arabic music cannot quite compare to the scenario of Carnatic music. Because Arabic is what its name implies "Arabic". And thus "Arabic music" would mean music that originates from the Arabian plate. Now that does not mean Islam and its evolution are not connected.

In India there are several cultures. Dandiya of Gujarat, Bhangra of Punjab, Lavani of Maharashtra, Dappankoothu of Tamil Nadu etc are not the same as Carnatic. Carnatic music is without a doubt "Hindu" and Indo European.

  • @xXBlackxRebelXx

It can be compared. Arabic music was largely developed through Islamic traditions. They evolved side-by-side with one another, and yet there is a distinction between the two. Arabic music refers to the musical styles of the Arabic world. Islamic music on the other hand can refer to any style of music that is devoted to Islam, whether it uses Arabic, Persian or Indian styles. Similarly, Carnatic is a style, while Hindu music can refer to any style.

  • @Jagged85 LOL Arabic music is strongly synonymous with Islam. Because Hebrew music and Levantine music are Jewish and Christian respectively.

Carnatic music was developed for the sole purpose of expression of Hindu theology in an artistic dimension. A carnatic musician can play a certain piece without singing and the notes of his piece can be understood and make sense to a fellow carnatic musician as adoring God by Hindu theology.

  • @bbahbegum there is a lot of music which mixed classical and world music !

  • Extreemly Great..RAHMAN N THE LADY WITH VIOLIN ROCKS..LONG LIVE ARR

  • cool stuff!!!!!!!!

  • This reminds me of something but I have no idea of what! I really like this song!

  • lol

  • hehe hupsu, I understand ur feelings :D

  • Well, @ about 2:20, it SEEMS like (but it may be purely coincidental) Vanessa pays tribute to mozart with a variation of a passage from Mozart. (Search here on YouTube for "Amadeus OST - Symphonie Concertante, K 364; 1st Movement" and advance to about the 3-30 mark.)

  • @hupsu : I can tell you :-), listen to the starting music of Silsila yeh chahat ka from Devdaas :-), I had a similar feeling.

  • @khudabukhsh Aish & Vanessa are my truly Idols.

  • Hmmm.. Nice work by him.. This is what is the best thing about rahman.. he understands every genre of music so well.. and brings it infront of every body..Actually doesnt really sound SO GREAT if you are thorough follower of carnatic clssical music in chennai .. he just changed some ragas in between and everything else is usual classical stuff which we hear.. only thing great about rahman is he can do this and also a song like Khalbali which has somuch of arabic mood in it...

  • i never expected classical music to be soooooooo relaxing and calming...and vanessa and rahman should work together more

  • Hauntingly beautiful!

  • You HAVE TO hear this in stereo to get the most pleasure out of it! Simply add "&fmt=18" (without the quotes) to the end of the URL in the address bar then click your "go" (not refresh) button. (BTW, this trick works for most videos on YouTube.)

  • Ok, looks like within the last week that YouTube is playing everything in stereo automatically, so the "&fmt=18" trick is NO LONGER necessary. Yaaaaay!

  • Is AR Rahman some mad genius or what?!?!? This is one of the most interesting and captivating songs I've EVER heard. What a fantastic collaboration, he and the equally mad with talent Vanessa Mae.

  • Ohhhh my... The emotional genius evident shortly after 2:34 thru 2:55... ahhh... such a warm and gentle caress those strings, cello, then bass, give Vanessa -- they seem to envelope her in a comforting and lifting ecstasy. Too pure!

  • Actually, to "feel" what I mean, it is better to hear the phrase in context, beginning at 2:29.

  • Simply superb

  • nooo words...wata theme,,,ma god,,,

  • oh my god!!!! this gave me the shivers..such wonderful music..hats off to both this amazing souls and the rest of them!

  • This is from the album Choreography...this was produced by Rahman himself...They used the ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA!!

  • FYI.

    Source: /wiki/Choreography_(Vanessa-Mae_album)

Choreography is a Vanessa-Mae album featuring work by Vangelis, Bill Whelan, A. R. Rahman, Tolga Kashif, and Walter Taieb. She performs with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

  • i can play like that... NOT.. hahahaha.. simply marvellous! Bravo!
