  • NEVER FAILS TO MAKE ME SMILE

  • OMG, memories! This and Charlie on the MTA were the fun highlights of the folk music era for me. LOL

  • My parents had this Laserdisc when I was a kid and I grew up watching it. It is indeed a Limelighters show. In fact, at 1:38, you can see Glenn Yarbrough in the background offstage cracking up wiping tears away.

  • I think the year was 1962 when the Limeliters appeared at Gill Coliseum, Oregon State University. in Corvallis I loved the entire program but Lou Gottlieb took things over the roof with his interpretation of "Have Some Madeira, my dear," This clip brings back lots of memories; the Limeliters kept us howling in laughter.

  • There are several other clips from this same performance in 1981 here on youtube, with all 3 members present. This one doesn't require Yarborough to be present on the stage. But it's the Limeliters all right.

  • It's them all right. Glenn is in the background on the right. Another version was done by Tony Randall and he was even funnier than Lou. Other than that, they were the funniest of the folk groups (P,P,M, Kingston Trio, Chad Mitchell Trio, Bros 4, Weavers, etc.. I saw them live a lot.

  • It frustrates me that if you look up "Madeira M'dear" on google, far more of the results are for the Limeliters than for Flanders and Swann. Still, upon viewing, he does perform it well. A nice tip of the hat.

  • Nothing against the performance (I don't think there's a folk singer or group in exsistance that doesn't do "Maderia" or "Gnu"), but Michael Flanders in his wheelchair pulls the song off so much better....

  • i think i'll stick to Flanders and Swann...

  • FANTASTIC!

  • Yes, that is Lou Gottlieb. He is a relative so I am positive, although has now gone to the great Morningstar Ranch in the sky. It looked like Alex Hassilev on the screen to the left. Alex and Lou retained the name Limeliters after Glenn Yarborough left the group. They performed at times just the two of them and then later Red Grammar joined them -- there are videos posted on Youtube. Wonderfully talented men. A joy to know as well.

  • There is another vid on YT posted by EdWaldrop titled "The Limeliters live 1981 ""There's a meeting here tonight"" that is obviously footage from the same performance. Lou is wearing the same suit, the band is the same, the set is the same and the fellow on guitar to Lou's right is revealed to indeed be Alex. Glenn joins them for 2 songs. Apperently this was just Lou's solo bit during one of their performances, but all three of the originals performed together that night.

  • When I enjoyed this song performed lived on each occasion Glenn and Alex left tehe stage or stood off in the dark.

    That is Dr Gottlieb, RIP

  • That is definitely Lou Gottlieb from the Limeliters.... but he is preforming without the Limeliters (Alex Hassilev and Glenn Yarborough). He performed solo before and after... and he did record this with the Limeliters, but technically this is not a Limeliters' performance.

  • @NormSeli

You don't half talk some nonsence.

  • He IS performing with Alex Hassilev and Glenn Yarborough. It is from the same NYC performance in 1981 that also has the clip "That's Just the Way It Goes/John Henry" In this clip, Alex is the one with the Orange shirt, and brown jacket (same outfit he's wearing singing lead on "That's Just the Way it Goes"

  • @NormSeli

Actually, this *is* The Limeliters. You can see Glenn in the back ground @1:36 and that's Alex @ stage right at the beginning. The videographer just focused on Lou for almost all of this single performance. This was taken during a 1981 performance in Manhattan. Search also for "The Limeliters live 1981" for comparison.

  • Mea culpa, The age and the beards really fooled me,

It is indeed the Fabulous Limelighters.

    Again, sorry.

    Jeff

  • This is definitely NOT the Limelighters. Not even a very good imitation

    Jeff

  • This Rendition is the one I chose to send to a "sweet young thing".

  • This Rendition is the one I chose to send to a "sweet young thing".

  • This song could potentially be more controvercial now than it was 48 years ago. Still, it's good that an old man can get a young lady to notice him. Too bad he has to get her drunk for that to happen. :-O :-D

  • It's definitely the Limeliters. This is Lou's most famous solo. I've seen him do it many times. Alex and Glenn are out of this particular frame. Calm down, everyone.

  • Goodevening Limeliters. On the first hand congratulations with this excellent performance. However, considering the circumstances, i am currently thinking about massive moustaches. Anyhow, i sang exactly the same song in Dutch. It gave me muh pleasure writing the song. Actually, it gave me more. Because when singing the song for the first time i met my wife Desiree. At this moment we are drinking wine (red) on the balcony. Regards Ted

  • Yes, yes, be sure, it's them

  • At 1:38 you will see Glen's face. He is standing to Lou's left behind another guitarist. At 1:49 you seeAlex playing guitar to Lou's right . If you look at one of the other clips from that evening. "Limelighters-A naturally unnatural act you will see and hear all three. Let's all agree that we are fans and that we miss Lou.

  • That's the Limeliters. All three originals are there.

  • This is NOT the Limeliters. Just Lou Gottlieb! It really does not matter since this song is all Gottlieb anyway.

  • You obviously don't know what you are talking about!

  • You obviously don't use your eyes. Not every fat guy is Glen. Not every bearded guy is Alex. "Put down the bowl, fatso~~~"

is definitely Limeliters. "Put down your bango, a**hole!" is not.

  • Read my previous comment.

(By the way I've worked with them)

  • @thirty6min

Since I own a copy of the Pioneer LaserDisc this video was taken from I can vouch for it being the original Limeliters. It is from the LaserDisk "There's A Meetin' Here Tonight" and features The Kingston Trio on side 2. I've seen the original Limeliters in person twice. The copyright is 1981. Lou is featured on this song. He is joined by Alex Hassilev and Glen Yarbrough. I miss Lou. He always made me laugh.

  • Where was Lou joined by Alex and Glen on this clip? The LIMLITERS NEEDS ALL THREE TO BE GENUINE!

Glen is not Limeliters by himself, or Alex, or Lou by any oneself. It is pathetic and criminal to pass Lou off as the Limeliters.

I saw them in Sausalito too, that never make my eyes too misty to watch this clip.

  • @thirty6min Lou always performed this one solo.

  • @thirty6min I'm glad you pointed that out. I thought at times that it was Fidel Castro.

  • Well, that's certainly Gottlieb. But I can't tell if that's a bushy Hassilev on guitar, and there's no Yarborough apparent. You may have only 1/3 of the Limeliters!

  • "Run, run from the Littlefolk.

Or you'll have dead leaves in your pocket,

    and snowflakes in your hair."

  • I am extremeely happy to confirm that this is the Limeliters, although the year would be hard to assess, late 80's I think. I had the Great pleasure of seeing and hearing them in my native Baltimore several times thru the years.

  • God, I love Flanders and Swann.

This is a great cover, though. Lots over energy.

  • I know this was added here in 2008, but he was already dead 14 years. When was this concert?

  • No worries Dr Gottlieb passed on in '96

  • Why would he want her to have any more of his booze if he already had his way with her?

I also wonder if the LL's could still get away w/ doing the song now w/ all the statutory rape awareness in today's culture.

  • "I see" said the blind man. She went for him 1st. Nice to know you're never too old to have what it takes.lol

  • I remember Lou from when I was a kid at Morningstar back in '69. He was sort of the resident guru and we often sat in a circle in front of his little cabin and passed around a joint and chanted Ahhom. Funny, I was only 9 years old then, but when I saw his face in this video I recognized him instantly. He looked exactly the same 40 years ago.

    RIP Lou.

  • PS, does anyone know that happened to Lena and Vishnu?

  • I had the honor & privilege of meeting the New Limeliters following a concert in 2005.

I brought to the occasion a little bottle of Madeira, and approached them after the concert and had Alex, Mack, and Andy autograph it.

Little did I know that concert would be one of Alex's last: he retired soon afterwards and handed over the reins to his Limeliter comrades to carry on.

That Madeira bottle, to this day, proudly stands on my kitchen counter, never again to be touched by human hands.

  • One more thing Lou - you really look more and more like Fidel Casrto - but I still love you!!!

  • Lou - your still the great one!!! Wish we both could meet again at the Hungry I in SFO - your still rock after all these years - dude!!!

  • He's been reclaimed by history since the early 1990's

  • Originals were: Lou Gottlieb (singing/bass in this video), Alex Hassilev and Glen Yarborough. Saw them early 60s in SLC.

  • this is definitely the limeliters. they were in my home for dinner a few times when they were in the bay area during the 80's and 90's.

  • It's a Swan and Flanders song

  • OK this is quite random but I love it!

  • Thanks for posting this gem. Listened to the song thousands of times and wished could be there to watch them perform. By comparing to the pictures on the album, this is the original LImeliters.

  • dont think its the limeliters. great song tho lol

  • THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU, for uploading this!! I have been listening and sharing this song with my friends for about 45 years!!!......YIKS!!>>45 years.Anyway it's great to SEE Lou Perform it. THANX AGAIN! Xtoda.

  • I doesn't really look like Lou with the beard and no horn rimmed glasses--but sure sounds like him.

  • Well, this is obviously not the original Limeliters, but they provide a good backdrop for Lou Gottlieb, who is absolutely genuine. These guys were a part of my childhood - my parents had all their records. Very nice to hear him again!

  • The original 3 Limeliters are on the stage in this clip. Lou with his bass fiddle, Alex to his right on guitar. In the background, to the stage right is standing Glenn Yarbrough.

  • At 1:39 you can see Glenn Yarbrough in the background.

  • Yup that Lou!! That man was an absolute genious. Many years ago I had the opportunity to chat with him after a concert in Cleveland Ohio. He made me feel like I had known him for years. I'll never forget that brief encounter with him. I was deeply saddened when I learned of his passing. I loved the original Limeliters, their concerts were magical. As fate would have it, I had the opportunity to spend some considerable time with Glen Yarbrough in Texas at the Kerrville Folk Festival.

  • yep, that's lou gottleib, without a doubt. i loved him!

  • Lou Gottlieb was a very funny guy. Sometimes I can't believe he's gone. This video brings back so many memories for me. Thank you, banjostead, for posting it.

    Love, Jusfriend

  • Ah Vicki Dugan ...

Vicki turn your back on me ...

    Revealing a "new cleavage" ...

All the lines come back to me.

  • Great to hear Lou Gottlieb and the Limeliters doing this classic song.

  • I haven't heard this song in ages. next to Vicki Dugan, this is the best of their comical songs. Thanks for posting it.
