  • can somebody PLEASE tell me what the road speed to gears are on a 18 Speed Eaton Fuller trans,in a 2008 peterbuilt "i think" 389?? PLEASE! im training with a driver of a company and he wants me to drive like HE does! not how i learned to! "double clutching in school" he wants me to,"coming to a stop sign, get to 6 gear, pop into neutral and find a lower gear" problem I have is knowing the road speed to gears!!! 1,2,3,4, i know 5 is 15mph

  • Shifting an 18 speed is basically just a combination of a Super 10 and a standard 10 speed. I personally love the Super 10 but as long as Im getting paid, I dont care about gear patterns.

  • I shifting this gear box in an Renault Major 385 in Germany and Europe for 20 Yaers ago . But now i m nothing more on the Road ! God bless all trucker´s of this earth , alseits good ride ! greetz from Germany

  • это Пиздец какой-то

  • Im running a 460 Mack wit a 18 spd EF... Love it... That extra splitter for each gear comes in handy when ur loaded with 30 ton of Logs on 10 tires.. Heaviest load ive hauled on it was 34 ton . Steering tires were barely staying on the ground :) Nuttin like logging

  • i used to drive a seddon atkinson with this gear box hated it no need for all them gears like range chane on volvo much better :)

  • At what point do you pull the front lever, and start over from the top left? As he did from :22 to :24

  • @mcgoo721 When you get through half the gears. 18 speeds are like 10 speeds but you split high low.

Think of the shift pattern like a stand H shift pattern.

    L13

    R24

    Pull the front knob:

    L57

    R68

But with 18 speeds you can split each gear between low and high. lol did that make any sense?

  • @ShaneMSnyder Yes and no haha. I looked in to them more since i asked that, and now I get it. Once I realized what exactly happened with the high/low selector, and the direct drive/OD button, it makes a lot more sense. 10spds just have a 5 gear pattern, with a hi/low switch, 13spds are the same only the high sides can be split, and 18's can be split low and high.

Just wish the school I'll be going to used 13's. They only use 10's.

  • rien enttendre sa je bande

  • This is the best video I've seen about shifting on youtube so far. Greaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat job! I'm looking forward to watching and learning more from you.

    Thanks

  • blue is also used in 10

  • @ck15001994 no it is not, a 10 speed Eaton Fuller does not have a splitter button so how could it be blue? A 9 speed Eaton Fuller does not have one either.

  • This is good, he shifted the transmission like a 13 speed lol!

  • @powerstroker0622 Maybe cos an 18 speed and a 13 speed have the same shift pattern ? haha.

  • Comment removed

  • @steve1600datsun lol i know and the ten speed has the same pattern too, just dont go in to low in high range

  • @PurpleXity1 yeah i know that, i drive an international with a 475 cummins isx with eaton fuller trans and she can be a bitch sometimes, and i recently used a pete with a 500 cat with eaton fuller transmission and she changed awesome. its more or less how the motor works with the transmission as well the rpms. when i made that comment the only thing i ever driven was an international so i was stupid to think that lol.

  • there is 16 gears forward , because I drive some think like that, 2 gears are reversing, that is 18 gears together, but we normally call it 16 gears transmission, not 18, because no1 start a ride from reversing gear... comprende? 16 gears transmission

  • @trpazlinek It has 18 forward gears. Low-LowOD, 1st-1stOD, 2nd-2ndOD, 3rd-3rdOD, 4th-4thOD, 5th-5thOD, 6th-6thOD, 7th-7thOD, 8th-8thOD. it also has two reverse R low and R high. You can shift an 18 speed like a 9 speed and only using the direct/OD selector for the 8OD gear or you can shift it like a 13 speed using the direct/OD selector in only the high range gears.

  • That's not the right way to shift n 18speed.. It Can b driven that way.. That how u shit n 13speed, 18speed u spilt all gears...

  • if it aint a effff iiiinn fullen you cant effff innn fix it!!!!

  • How difficult is it to drive with a tranny like this? I can drive stick, but big rigs confuse the hell out of me.

  • @gunnutM14

4 hours of lessons and you should be close to getting it.

its pretty simple, its just a H pattern gear box with 2 ranges,

so you have 8 gears, 4 low 4 high, and then you can split the gear again if needed, so you all up you have 18 gears.

but its best to just think of it as a 8 speed H patten gear box.

  • Got a chance to drive a peterbilt 425 Cat with an 18 speed this winter. It was pretty cool, split every single gear.

  • A good tranny, I used it the first time in 1980 (13spd) but it's getting to be inadequate with today's torque monsters. The strongest version of 18spd bears 3050Nm/2249lb-ft of torque.

  • no you don't have to use the clutch. you flip the button let off the throttle it will drop into gear then get into the throttle again

  • Dispatch causes all this chaos ?? I never imagined only one person would causes so much trouble.

  • that is how you grab some gears!!

  • what are the common causes for so much stress driving a truck ?? Problem that may arise any moment, trafic, road conditions, weather, timing, waiting, delays... ???

  • @brossmart DISPATCHER

  • @brossmart for me, its traffic. i drive a chevy kodiak with 25+6 gooseneck hauling rebar and equipment and go into neighbor hoods alot, but on highways cars think your a slug and will cut you off and just generally piss you off. my boss kinda runs me around sometimes, but 5 mins later talking about golf again. road conditions can be a huge factor, rain sucks! these trucks have a very stiff suspension and highway tires which arent good in rain sometimes, yeah snow stinks, we had 16" of snow and

  • @brossmart i had to go pick up snow plow attachments for customers (were a Bobcat skidsteer dealer) and it was a rough trip on the ice and snow. i have to time things out sometimes because i either have to drop something off somewhere and pick up at another location, so it can be a nightmare at times. all in all, i really enjoy driving, its not like driving a car around, theres so much more to do. i sometimes wish my truck was a stick but in some places having an auto tranny is a lifesaver.

  • are you using clutch when using half gear (white) button?

  • shh !!!

  • @PurpleXity1 'The workings of this trans sure enthuses me....Thanks for answering me.

  • @PurpleXity1 I like you explanation on the air slave valves. I can understand that..It's just the gray button that I am still in question...It seems to me like sence it doesn't move but a half of a inch forward for a higher gear or back to go back to to lower gear, It seems like that it would be a electronic shift and that shift would operate a slave valve....posible?????? heh or no could I be wrong Thanks for answering me.

  • cant ba an international lol changes to smooth

  • I lke how you took the vidio from the dash.. It showed all the moves of the hand..So what is really shifting, the trans or the rear end. 'What is the electronics shifting...and another question is when you move the gray button forward are you useing the clutch or just letting off of the gas and then pushing the gas pedal?

  • I lke how you took the vidio from the dash.. It showed all the moves of the hand

  • actually a eaton fuller 13 spd has a red color splitter. i know becuz i drove on for 13 mon.

  • an 8 speed eaton fuller trans with deep reduction or lo-lo they call it has a blue splitter on the side

  • Does anyone know how to shift a 12 speed manual? I might be getting a job soon and that is the only trannys they have for their trucks. I cant seem to find any references on how to shift a 12 speed manual because it doesnt seem like they have them any more

  • @Vorash2002 You learn that by practice, thats the only way...

  • @Vorash2002 the only 12 speed I know of is mack. I have seen two variences of it. one has 2 sticks, one with six gears, the other with low, high and reverse. to shift from 6 to 7 ya gotta move em both at once. The other variation has 1 stick with six gears and an air selector with low, high, neutral and reverse. some volvo trucks have 14-speeds which are commonly referred to as 12-speeds. they shift similar to an 18-speed but with less holes. these require clutching the split shifts

  • @mrbean5644(the diesel mechanic)...Ya better go back and check your hand books.Volva has a 14 speed transmission.

  • Real trucks have two sticks

  • You shift it like a 13 spd

  • @ mrbean5644 and PalRider2000

this trans is an 18 speed he is just didn't split the low side. tranmissions are only classified by the number of forward gears. also you can tell it is an 18 speed because the spliter button is gray. 13 is red . 15 is blue

  • @3406bpete 15 speed is for vocational high reduction, 10 speed is for on highway transmissions, 13 and 18 is for Eaton Fuller performance transmissions.

  • @3406bpete 15 or 16 is blue well its kinda confusing its called a 15 but really you have 16 gears.

  • @3406bpete One question, can you tell me if you have to press the clutch everytime you splitshift or you just release the, fuel, split and press the fuel again.

  • @3406bpete I did not know about the colors..thanks for that!

  • @3406bpete Gray is also used for the Super-10, but without the range change switch.

  • While using the splitter do we have to dip the clutch in?

  • @richu27 you can clutch or just release the fuel, both work

  • @richu27 no u dont =)

  • @4151jason Thanks. Hope I can take a spin in an 18 speed..... :)

  • @richu27 haha yea i have man, 500 hp v8 merc up n down our 2km driveway a few times =)

  • @4151jason Oh.... Nice..... And also I want a suggestion I stay in middle east. In here the diesel we get contains high amount sulfur. And after few months or years of run diesel vehicles start to smoke. How can we stop that?

  • @4151jason Haha.... In my place people don't use much diesel vehicles. Because its costly and just got more costly.

  • @richu27 Additive!

  • Hey compa no te comas las uñas, mmmm bueno si andas en el puro mosco pues si

  • ok enuf with you showing what you do MrChevy1966 a 13 speed is only a 13 speed if you count the granny gear and it become's a 14 speed when you count one side of the reverse gear and if you whant to be really cool is you can evan call it a 15 gear cause rember you can split reverse. the mane thing is you need to learn how to corect some on and not cut them down like i just did to you. and hear is som news for you I AM NOT A DIESEL MECHANIC JUST SO YOU KNOW.

  • this is not 18 speed . this a 14 speed eaton fuller

  • @mrbean5644 no. this is an 18 speed. he is skipping the low range gears and using it as a 13 speed. at 2:27, he splitted back to 12th gear.

  • @mrbean5644 I am a diesel mechanic and i know they dont make a 14 speed just so you know.

  • Um, I don't know much about trucks, what are those levers and switches for on the gear knob?

  • @CarboNHeaD123 The one on the front selects the gear range, you have Crawler-1st-2nd-3rd-4th, then you pull it up and 1st-2nd-3rd-4th becomes 5th-6th-7th-8th. The switch on the side is a splitter, which gives you a low and high ratio for each gear.

So, to go through all 18 ratios, you use the splitter for low and high on each gear up to 4thHigh, then you pull up the range selector and go 5th through to 8th using low and high split on each gear.

  • @CarboNHeaD123

the gray one is uesd to split the gears and the black one is your high and low side gears

  • bloody good shifting mate

  • Im a newbie. Do you have to push inna clutch? or is it semi auto?

  • @toro74449 No just change with the revves of the engine and momentom. Or the jake, but not really up hill or you might miss a gear and loose your speed and end up crawling.

  • @toro74449 Not semi auto, synchronized gears. You dont HAVE to use the clutch, but in most places you have to use it to pass the test. I never use it after im going. I only use it to stop and start. I know its not the best on the trannys but it so damn easy...lol You just gotta find your trucks "sweet spot" for RPM vs Gearing + Grade and weight. Every truck is different! Also, dont rest your hand on the shifter while going, its hard on the trans too! Good luck and welcome to the trucking life!

  • thanks for putting up this video

  • I rather prefer synced gears than these ancient american solutions.

  • He skiped 5 gears ok

  • It is an 18 speed but he's just shifting as if it Wass a 13 speed !

  • Hello, I'm trying to understand what your doing. I see you go through 1-4 switch to high and go to 5 this I have done. Then you go to 5, and then hit the side switch. What gear would that be? Can you count then out as your going, thanks.

  • you shift this thing like a walk in the park

  • Nice video! But I could hear on the RPM's that you didn't need to use so many gears as you did in the beginning. :-)

  • this is not a 18 speed

  • @barcelatajunior03 Yes it is an 18 speed. 18 speeds have the grey button. He was just shifting it like it's a 13 speed

  • @WaWagasman you can't due like that you go busted gears

  • @barcelatajunior03 What do you mean? with a 13, you only split the upper range of the gears, with the 18, you split all of the gears. You can choose to split just the high range of the tranny with the 18 if you want, just the way it was being doen in this video

  • @WaWagasman i drive hevy duty trucks on mexico you pull maybe 90 tons you can't mising gear you do you broke the drive shaft when you make changes

  • @WaWagasman i drive hevy duty trucks on mexico you pull maybe 90 tons you can't mising gear you do you broke the drive shaft when you make changes

i sorry mi englis is no realy god but i pull you now 90 tons is 180000 pounds

  • @barcelatajunior03 Word? Nice, Yeah, when you are loaded heavy, you can't miss any gears. Hey man, It's allright. Your english is much better the nmy spanish lol :)

  • i love an 18 speed i had a 379 pete with a 550 twin turbo and an 18 speed i used for low boying equipment around it was a sweet sweet ride i loved it it was white with red fenders and red flames on the hood really cool ride

  • Pense numa caixa boa de mais pena que são poucas as que existem aqui no brasil

  • I noticed you only split the high side of the gears were you speed shifting or something?

  • what truck is this? model.

  • does them half a gears really make a difference if your pulling a normal load im just wondering

  • this is 13 speed not 18

  • wow!

  • He didn't split the basement gears and only split on the high speed gears. He drove like a 13 speeds trunk but surely is a 18 speeds transmission I can tell by the gray spliter button instead of red button on the 13 speeds.

  • @kevinkkh01 i may be wrong

    18-gray

    15-blue

    13-red

  • @kroupal1 18 and 13 correct, havent seen a 15 though

  • @kroupal1 10 speed is gray too

  • @weiserbud67 erm im not so sure about that i don't think 10 sped has a divider...

  • @kroupal1 super 10 has a grey splitter but no range selecter and ya 18 is grey 13 is red 15 is blue 9LL is blue and 8LL is blue

  • @kenworthK100234 the super ten doesnt have a splitter it has a range selector...my uncle drives a super ten and i was in it for the last 2 days i think i know

  • @12peter96 oh ya i drove a super 10 for two years look up super on you tube its a spliter on the side of the shifter not the front your talking about a regular 10 speed 5 bottom and 5 top a super only has 5 shifts that you can make with the shifter and the other 5 with the spliter this means lo is first hit the spliter is second and then split the spliter back and move the shifter to the middle gear and thats third so on so forth all the way to tenth gear

  • So the gray splitter is sort of an overdrive for each of the gears in high range?

  • @MrINeedSome the gray splitter can split the low range gears and high range on an 18 speed, unlike a 13spd when you can only split the higher range

  • 15 grand? Or 15 hundred?

  • 13 speed idiot

  • no asi no es,

  • @MrBombastic16 You should look into the laws a little closer, many states allow heavier combinations without permit

  • @Smokefan420 WITH, idiot

  • this is probably a stupid question but are there any trucks with a button clutch? like on the shifter?

  • @xxbal1inxx uh the one on the side is each gear hi lo the onw in front is the full tranny hi lo i think

  • @xxbal1inxx like the push button on a camel jockeys fore head? hahaha

    NO,,, guessing u don't drive

  • @elwm444 no i dont im 14.... o was just curious because it seems like they shift way to fast to push in and let out the clutch

  • @xxbal1inxx I know, He is slip shifting. thats where they don't use the clutch at all. he will bring the reves up to about 15 grand (depending on the type of motor) then let off the gas and shift the next gear... these are the tricks of the trade you don't learn in driving school. but it is posible to double clutch that fast. the old guys are good at it. hahaha

  • 13 seep

  • Good video - clean pic and clear view. Should split all gears though - you said shifting an 18 speed. To be fair.... THe clutch or the lack of use of the clutch probably should be addressed as well... Fuller Eaton specifies using a clutch on their transmissions. I dont know of too many drivers tht use a clutch at all, except occasionally and for starting out and backing up...

  • @mickalvey1 I've been driving an 18 since last tues and have yet to split the bottom end. It's not really necessary unless your extremely heavy, just makes for a lot more shifting than whats really needed.

  • @biggare1980 this guy hauling steel should of split the bottom 4 shure sounded like his truck was struggling plus he still had his four ways on in 7th over

  • cool

  • that"s 18 sp not 13 sp he just moved from 4 to9 sp that s why u think it s 13. plus 13 speed trans have red splitter not gray

  • @SAYHZAK1 yeah if im right i think a 13 speed the botton is red and the 18 speed the botton is gray

  • That's a 13 speed! You didn't split your top gears!

  • @pilotmanmax a 13 speed splits the top only ,with the range change in low the splitter button wont be able to move

  • What are those switches you flick on the dash?

  • @TCFan25 the switches he's useing are the gear spliter switches

  • @protectoroffaith correction my bad i thought your we're talking about the swtiches on the shifter

  • @protectoroffaith The gear splitter switch is on the lever itself, yes I know that. But he takes his hand away from the lever and sounds like he's flicking a whole bunch of other switches on the dashboard or something

  • why you did't spok .....

  • are you double cluching or shifting with out cluth. I am going for a CDL and the company uses eaton fuller 13 speeds and 18 speeds. does it matter if you dont use the cluch or if you double cluch. i

  • doesnt matter , i dont use the clutch just get it at the right rpm and it will go right in , but its up to you , if you want to use it then use it

  • @reedbrad2009 as a beginner, you should clutch out of gear and it should just slip into next gear without clutch. once you get the hang of it, you can forget about the clutch except to stop or start. my clutch and 18 speed lasted over 1.5 million miles when i sold my truck.

  • thanks. I'm use to 10spd, and they asked me to use their 18spd. talk about feeling lost..lol

  • whats under the hood a caterpillar c15?

  • maaan that hands needs some light sun..

  • i like that on the side button (GREY) the splitter all you do is push it forward let of the acclurator and the truck shifts its self form (8 to 8^) its neat.

  • you forgot to mention that big trucks usually only rev to 2000 ( ish ) revs flat out . my car idles at that when its cold lol

another reason why they need many gears

  • why do trucks have so many gears?

  • otherwhise you don't have the power to pull your trailer...

  • @berryvandemerwe Why so?

  • Because it is easier to get up to speed. If they have only 5 gears, they wouldn't be able to move as easily. e.g. if you started in 3rd gear in a car, it would probably stall (Yes I have done that before!)

  • on a 10spd I can pull out on a very very small hill in 6th high range with a empty 53' trailer just let the clutch out very slow. the trucks computer will give it just the right amount of fuel to stay at idol (isocronise idol) its called dont touch the accelorator the computer does that for you. I watched a guy say i can drive got in the truck used both peadels that truck looked like a bull at a rodeo..

  • "just let the clutch out very slow" you mean slip the clutch. noobs slip clutches to start in higher gears cause they cant shift for shit.

  • Here's a good answer from yahoo answers:

at the beginning u start with a big gear to produce the more torque in order to be able to move the vehicle, but that torque comes at the expense of force ( on which the acceleration depends), but as u gain speed, less torque is needed, so u switch to a smaller gear which produces less torque but more force increase the acceleration and so on...

  • lol thank you

  • @04smallmj To clarify, there is a certain amount of torque (rotational force) required to turn the wheels and move the truck. The engine also puts out a certain amount of torque. The gears match the required torque from the engine with the wheels. Starting off or going up hills require lots of torque to the wheels so the engine is geared accordingly. It takes little torque to cruise at 65mph so a different gear can be chosen.

  • High weight trucks have short gear ratio to obtain best power and torque to pull that weight, those trucks can pull 40 Tons of cargo, so it`s impossible pull that weight with normal 6 speed gearbox...

Try to climb with 40Tons with normal gearbox =D and u gotta owned!!! =)

  • can you say BRAKE FADE lol but I heard of an 6 spd already hard to find. im geussing

  • The reason why they have so many gears, is so they are able to keep the engine in the optimal power range for the engine for their load. Instead of bogging or over-revving, they have multiple gear selections which allow them to tow extra heavy loads. This is the simple explanation.

  • they dont have the higher rpm range they rev up to about 3500 redline but most are governed at about 2500, 2800 rpm they have a lot more touqe then horse power also the drivers only shift in between 1100 and 1500 rpm. newer engine are going to govern at 1800 to 2100 rpm its funny cuz the truck in high range 8th gear in an eaton 10 spd is only running around 35 mph....

  • did I hear the name Gibson? lol

  • Great camera angle*****

  • Sony Ericsson z550i

  • @iamabeaver Actually that would be the 4 ways as I am slowly getting up to speed on a highway with a fully loaded trailer.

  • good job bro the biggest thing i drove was a thrirteen speed fully loaded..Down 177 rice road from desert center alaway to lake havasu i am only thirteen but i grew up around truck and i want to be a trucker one day like you

  • @iamabeaver dumbass

  • @iamabeaver Owned.

  • @iamabeaver I have some wood for you to snack on:)

  • how long did it take you to learn that shifting

  • Autre chose qu' en europe je vous le dit !

  • lol a clutch is only for wen you stop and take off

  • No it isn't, but being as stupid as you, should be.

  • @iip47c not in America

  • the first shits (from LOW to 4L) seem to be very SOFT... i suppose you were not using the clutch, how is it possible to shift gears so smoothly without the clutch?

  • @isadorus

    rev matching.

  • Match engine, and road speeds.

  • Is that a kiddy cat I hear purring in the background or is that a cummins? nice shifting by the way driver.

  • cat c15

  • Hy, nice vid.

Do you use a clutch when u are gearing

    tnx

  • no not need to use the cluch ,what u have to know is the RPM for any gear/speed
