Starting a Tiger Moth

for a start VH-UVB has brakes and a pilot is in the cockpit.

Its safer to start from behind is the big message. Starting from the front is the old military way and old habits die hard.

I have started tigers from the back for about 30 years and have done over 500 starts, how many starts have the people making comments made - ZERO or maybe a few!

The real threat in starting by hard is a backfire! Fare go you people mix at least a little sense with your comments

Two ways to start a Tiger, the dangerous way (from the front) and the safe way (from the back). This tiger moth has a pilot in the back and is fitted with brakes. If the aeroplane were to move forward, if you start it from the back then you can flick the switches off. If you start it fron the front - look no arms, no head!

I hand start tigermoths every weekend and this is crazy no chocks is a complete no brainer.

and as for being behind the prop utter madness if the aircraft lurches forward you could be pushed in the prop.

its not clever its just plain stupid.

i have seen many start an engine that way and they say that they can get to the switches if it jumps the chocks. not the brightest way to start a tiger. And come to think of it they are not even using chocks. They probably haven't even seen the operating handbook and would prbably tell you that it stalls at 40 knots.

These guys have shown a perfect example of what not to do.
