Oceans start rising approx 20K years ago as last ice age ends. Rate of rise is linear till about 5000BC. Then slope changes. New linear slope from 5000 BC to current, Slope same through last 100 years. So... GLobal warming -- real. That man causes it, the data doesn't show it. Now... Consuming oil recklessly, as a fininte resource, and while funding people who are not neccesarily ones to support -- that IS a real issue, but don't use the bogus global warming argument.
I am making a free music video on global warming for a local band and would like to use a few seconds of your video - please may i do so? (i shall include your name in the end credits). regards, Jay. (please let me know via email guy.smiley@aol.com)
Glaciers are essentially rivers of snow and ice. Calving is the natural reaction of that river when it comes in contact with the seas. Disappearing glaciers are caused by the reduction of accumulation at the tops and premature melting from higher temperatures. If the glacier wasn't calving it would mean there was a lot less snow and ice were pushing it's way down. Calving is a good sign of healthy glacier.
@chessonmyshirt Then why has the majority of the glacial mass disappeared in last 50-60 years? If this is "the natural life of a glacier" it's a cycle that causes everything else to die. We've got city blocks of glacier running aground in Newfoundland. How "natural" is that?
@chessonmyshirt Wrong. The only people trying to deny global warming is caused by the actions of humans are people in the pocket of the oil conglomerates. 99% of climatologists and scientists in all related fields agree, global warming is occuring, it is escalating, and it is caused by human activity. Turn off the right wing corporate news you listen to. Your being lied to.
You've obviously taking my statement in a very wrong way, I'd be the first to agree that something should be done about global warming just to be on the safe side - but the evidence is out there that proves this could also be a natural part of the earth's development, we have warming and cooling periods.
I should have been more clear and said it is the extent at which humans are causing global warming that is in question, there is no doubt we have a role in it.
It hasn't been called "Global Warming" since Al Gore found out it cools down in the winter, Now they call it "Climate Change", Just like Obamas "Change"
@thatbritts Lol. It was called global warming when the atmosphere was warming noticably because of elevated carbon in the thin atmosphere, which is now off the scale going back 163,000 years. It is now causing the CLIMATE to CHANGE! and not imperceptively, but in profound ways. Hence, dear foxian fool, the term climate change.
I was crew on the Rad from april to october last year, so you must've seen me somewhere. I remember this was our last Alaska cruise before heading down to the Panama Canal.

@arstovicek Uh i wouldnt say calving itself says much about a glacier, its more about calving rate/ice density and depth.

@Mikerohren
This isn't Global Warming.
This is the natural life of a Glacier, they form at the top of Glacier mountains and calv towards the bottom.

@Maxid1
You're getting Glacial calving mixed up with global warming which is the increased temperatures causing the poles to melt quicker.
If there was no Glacial calving the world would be covered with ice -_-
chessonmyshirt 7 months ago
@chessonmyshirt What is your opinion as to why the glacial mass has so significantly decreased in the past 60 years?
Maxid1 7 months ago
@Maxid1
Global warming, whether this is natural or caused by man is something we as humans don't know at this point in time.
This is different to Glacial calving.
