When in Kopan recently I inquired about the founders. No one could even tell me anything about these two incredible women and my questions were dismissed. If it were not for Zina, there would be no Kopan, no sainthood for Yeshe and Dopa, no Western converts, etc..and the lamas would not travel in travel in SUVs, the founders have been forgotten and erased because they are women.
@abbefaria1 When you go to the webpage called Lama Yeshe Wisdom and read the text called "biography of Lama Yeshe" Zina´s name is actually mentioned 14 times, and when I went to Kopan 3 months ago, Ani Karin (from the video above) - talked about her and her story several times.
Also most of the visiting teachers at my fpmt-center are females. Robina Courtin, Rita Riniker, Paula etc....I truly don´t believe that this line of buddhism would ever erase anyone from their history, based on their gender (how would you explain white & green Tara - the female Buddhas?). Lama Yeshe & and Lama Zopa are mainly mentioned so much, because they are our great Lamas. No one questions the fact that a lot of others also played a big part (including Zina).
why not mention the REAL founder of Kopan? Zina Zarewski who brought Lamas Yeshe and Dopa to Kathmandu. She was the first westerner to request instruction, she bought the land on which Kopan was built and brought the first westerners and became the first western nun? She died there while on a 3 year meditation exercise. Another westerner Sam Mathews, now sister Sam took over after Zina died, making sure that everything could continue. It makes me angry to see such mysoginy from tibetan clergy.
Thank you so, so much for making this beautiful video. Taking a course at Kopan has absolutely transformed my life and I encourage anyone who hasn't to do it right away!
Does anyone know if I can take the same "Discovering Buddhism" classes at one of their centers here in the United States? I realize it would not be the same experience as going to Kathmandu, but I won't be able to go for about another year anyway, and I would like to take that course first so I can take something more advanced.
Thanks for the comments, yes it is quite an incredible experience, yes life changing, hence why I decided to do the doco. I’ll probably do the 30 day one in 2011.
