John Carmack & ID Software dominated the 90's gaming industry with innovative games such as Wolfenstin, Doom, and Quake. However ID Software have been quiet during the 00's. But with games like RAGE and Doom 4 on the way, it looks like they will have a stranglehold on the gaming industry once again.

Valve isn't his company - that's Gabe Newell (who also spoke at GDC 2010). id software is his thing (Commander Keen, Doom, Quake, Rage).

@slannmage First, it's not ID, it's Id. Anyway, Id's been making mini-games because John's been develpoing IdTech5. And you know what? RAGE and DOOM4 will kick-the-shit outr of any other games that will be out at the same release-date time period.

I doubt it, I think they'll both turn out to be mediocre games, Id havn't got what it takes anymore. Carmack also hasn't made a good Engine since Quake 3, Epic have taken the crown and will stay there.

@slannmage Well if Doom4 turns out to be a fail, then that will be the day a meteor wipes out humanity... like in Rage. Everyone is waiting for Rage, and everyone is dying to get a scoop on DOOM4. Rage already looks promising, and considering Doom4 brings back action, everyone wants it. The comments here pretty much show it, same as any JohnCarmack or IdSoftware video.

-But hey, I'll admit Id lost a bit of creativity, I havent' played any of their newest Quakes...

Also doom 3 was a great game, quake 4 and wolfenstein the new one and quake wars etc on the other had wasn't good games but they weren't developed by ID Software.

Sometimes I wonder what if John Romero didn't leave id Software. Would he gain more coverage and fame than John Carmack or would both of them be accepting awards together like the great pals they were years ago? Carmack may have invented the FPS genre but it was Romero who helped visualize Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake.

It's a shame Romero was fired from id and the things that had happened to him at Ion Storm. I just feel that he too should be applauded for his innovations in gaming history.

A true legend, just goes to show what happens when you stick to what you love and don't sell yourself out. I know of so many people in the game industry who just stuck at the same job that they secretly hated through fear of the unknown.
