Love this and Terry Reid's but don't forget Steve Marriott's version on his 1989 LP 30 seconds to Midnite....and as for Season of The Witch.............
I personally prefer this version to terry reids....maybe its the psychedelic effect on donovans vocals! no doubt terry reids version is awesome, but donovan hit the psychedelic spot on this
@KIDAmnesiacBends And yet it was Terry's version included on Psychedelic Dream compilation - I am forever thankful for that because this is how I first heard Terry... and this song... and later Donovan. BTW please don't forget they were good friends, and it was their common producer's decision (one Mickie Mouse) to have Terry record this first - MM was just trying to protect Donovan's career because the song had reference to reefers...
I love both versions. I first heard it at four years old and immediately applied it to myself then the song went away from the radio entirely and I never heard it until I got my copy of Barabajagal, but my memory of sticking it to myself had come back when I got the troubadour version which probably was the one that I remember best.
I think it's actually rather clever that he disguised a drug song by making it sound as though it was simply about a girl who paints pictures (note the double-entendre of 'draw', which can refer either to the pictures or to drawing the smoke into her lungs).
I've never heard the story that he changed the lyrics because he turned anti-drug. I think the more likely explanation was that the censors back in the 60s would have banned a song with such obvious drug references (he had to be subtle).
There are a few different girls in the video, Nico is at the end and Twiggy appears throughout the video, and the other girls are random girls from pictures on the internet.
Agreed. In that one, "Superlungs" is explicitly a stoner chick: she "knows how to draw" (inhale) because she's "getting high with her classmates from school." Donovan got very antidrug around late '66, and recorded this bowlderized version as a result. It's a good song anyway -- thanks to RandomWildSex for posting it!
I disagree. I think it's more clever of Donovan to disguise this drug song in inoccuous-sounding lyrics. I like the sound of "She's too busy painting sky with her friends in school" (notice how he hesitates a moment before he says "painting sky", as if to let the listener fill in with the words "getting high").
Plus, I think "painting sky" is the perfect analogy for smoking pot: it brings out one's creativity, and lifts you high up into the atmosphere (plus, "painting sky" is so whimsical!)
this song is the best

It's about a 14 year old slut who is extremely proficient at fellatio. Duh!
jerkbwh129 2 years ago
@jerkbwh129 I'd say it was referring to her skills at smoking grass (draw, superlungs)

Terry's version is better... by light years!
That's why he's been nicknamed SuperLungs.
