The brilliant Andreas Scholl in 1999, recording the folk song for his CD 'Wayfaring Stranger.' This folk song was adapted from the poem of the same name by WB Yeats published in 1889.
Scholl is magnificent, but I prefer the BBC Proms version. Less orchestration is more with most of this English songs. The Proms version is devastatingly emotional in a way that this is not, partially due to the simple guitar accompaniment as well as the audience reaction.
I've heard maybe a 100 versions of this old Irish song in the past 45 years, with topversions of Scottish tenor Kenneth McKellar and Irish contralto Bernadette Greevy(both died recently)also brilliant lighter voices like Anne Shelton(english)
and Mary O'Hara(Irish),all totally different, ranging from full orchestra to a lonely harp. The Andrea Scholl-version is another true gem, unlike any other version. Superb voice with stunning orchestration.A very haunting and emotional interpretation.Bravo
@VincentNeko Andreas Scholl is a countertenor voice wise. a countertenor describes a male voice that is equivalent in range and attributes to the female soprano. that's why- with your eyes closed- he sounds like a woman's soprano voice but with a little twist in it. to me it sounds just great!
@deaschowieda - "Countertenor" doesn't really describe a specific range so much a singing technique, using head voice and some falsetto, and not chest voice with some head voice like other male singers. In this case, Andreas Scholl's vocal range is considered "alto," though admittedly that's not a soloist fach.

there's a beautiful version of Scholl at the night of the proms, accompanied with just a guitar. It's simply stunning

Beautiful performance. But the arrangement in just too much for such a gentle and simple song. Zu viel!

I agree, I prefer the version with John Williams.

My fave is the Nicolai Gedda version of the Britten arrangement.

I sang the Britten arrangement with a childs choir and a simple piano last Wednesday! I don't know if it has been recorded, I'll try to upload it.
Jazzmaster11 2 years ago
@gwbassoc I think the arrangement suits the song perfectly BECAUSE it is so simple.
