This was my favourite Enz track when I was a the ripe old age of 7! I used to play it on my flat type mono Sanyo cassette deck. I had to borrow the True Colours cassette from my cousin. Nowadays, I have moved on and my fave Enz songs are: Dirty Creature, I Walk Away and I Don't Wanna Dance.
I did work experience at AAV Recording Studio's as this song was being created.....shall never forget those days....i knew a classic album was being born...
@markblyn The Beatles deserved every single handclap/scream that was given them. Split Enz would fully agree. And yes, True Colours is a perfect pop album.
Bought this album when it came out in UK...boy they looked surreal ...it takes a lot of courage to look that weird.....saw them on "Sight & Sound in concert" and when they did "Charley" I was mesmerised......listening to this song again tonight,
I can hear shades of "Paperback Writer" especially in the fade out period.
The best album of 1980 bar none. Better than the Beatles in many respects on this album and the almost 'but not quite' as brilliant follow-up 'Time and Tide'. Completely unique cool air echoey, take a trip up the motorway with the window open feel to this album. Fantastic Squeeze/Beatles hybrid songwriting. Crystal clear vocals, a story for each song and unbelievably brilliant production. This is one of those records that makes me wonder why I have so many albums in my collection.
I remember seeing the cover of my friends album and saying no you cant have the right album because mines a different colour! when they released this.
Great tune. I read that this song was actually supposed to be the leadoff single from the "True Colors" album. I believe it was at the band's suggestion to the record company (Mushroom?) that they pick "I Got You". They got their way and the rest is history.
Certainly the hits were good - but their individual albums beat their 'hits' compilations anyday, considering some of the brilliant material on them that one would never hear on radio...
beatle song listen to it that way,new wave my ass.

Yes, better than a lot of the Beatles stuff - the most over-applauded band in history. A perfect pop album.

The opening guitar is SO Alex Lifeson-ish... It's cool! It's got that muscular tone to it!!!

I love this CD. One request--would you please post 'Nobody Takes Me Seriously' from this same CD? That's another great Enz gem.
