Shout outs are always the signature of a western. All movies including The Wild Bunch, The long Riders, The Good The Bad and The Ugly, For a Few Dollars More, A Fistful of Dollars, Duck You Sucker and all the rest are memorable by their shoot outs. Not that the films are terrible without. It just adds the icing on the cake. The slow mos here are awesome!
@TheTrba Oh the director of this film use to work with Sam Peckinpah. Peckinpah would of loved this film, I don't know if he saw it but during that time his health was going downhill. If it wasn't for that, he would have had about 5 more good westerns left in him.
where's their artillery expert to act as a sort of continuity supervisor to keep from having such an obvious error? sheesh - this is actually FUNNY because they don't reload... lmao
Total genius. I feel the same excitement every time I watch this. The other day I watched Gangs of New York for the first time and there are no scenes with this level of impact whatsoever.
Oh wow... I forgot to mention the soundtrack from Once Upon A Time In The West, which is probably the greatest soundtrack for a western in my opinion. Fail me...
I've seen almost all of em from Shane to the remake of 310 To Yuma. So far nothing beats the unique cinematography, epic story, and the acting from Once Upon A Time from The West. (Im so glad Sergio got Bronson instead of Eastwood) I also like the shootouts it had because they were a bit more realistic. (even though they only had 4 or so) if i wanted a gun porn western id just go watch The Quick and the dead. (terrible movie)
The level of intensity is beyond it's time. Yes, yes Taxi Driver, Straw Dogs and other films were made before this but as far as I'm concerned nothing before this held the same slow motion style shots.
@blowfish3 Ive counted down about 80 shots from the JJ band.they are 7 person and two of them are with 2 pistols.Ofcourse it looks like a little bit strange about the reload, but I think that this isnt so big problem, because it fits somehow....
@iliapopovich alrigh thanks for the info. i've just started watching western movies hehe. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly didn't have many shootouts but it had a good story. That's the first i've watched so far.
ALL TIME GREATEST WESTERN SCENE! Unforgiven rivals the film in terms of story and acting; however I am not aware of another western that so accurately depicts bullets penetrating cowpokes..Cross of Iron is Peckinpah's masterpiece-and my personal favorite-but this film changed my life after one viewing. Granted I was probably 13 years old but I hadn't been exposed to blasting caps in blood colored condoms simulating bullet hits..
Classic scene from a great movie. Apart from being a tribute to Sam Peckinpah it´s also surprisingly close to the facts and to what happened to the Younger-James-Gang in Northfield.
Yes that`s a fantastic sequence and my favourite part of the movie, too. On the DVD copy of The Long Riders I bought a few years ago, after having seen it on tv, the bit where the rider and horse topple to the ground - just before the rest of the gang crash through the window - has been cut. It just shows Bob Younger/Robert Carradine and his horse already on the ground, but not the fall(which presumably was done by a stuntman). Anyway, it`s good to see the scene with the stunt left in.
CRAZY THAT JESSE WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT GOT AWAY WITHOUT BEING HIT

That's what they get for trying to rob a bank in Minnesota, they should have stayed in the south where the pickings were easy.

They don't make shootouts like this anymore.

Starting at 1:08, it looked like Robert Carradine almost wiped out from making a sharp turn.

Damn good movie. They kept it void of the bs and models/hat club cowboys that plague most westerns.:)

This was a well made western....one of the best. Wild Bunch is my fav....but this one is great. Just pretend they reload when they switch scenes!

Oh, I forgot to mention this, The Wild Bunch is the only film I can think of that runs pretty close to this film's intensity.

The scene with the train robbery and the one when they are breaking thru the windows were invented, but the rest, must be true.
