I wonder if the creators and writers of Spitting Image felt, at the very days Thatcher’s PM career ended, that the main drive behind the superb creativity of their show is gone… Quite ironic, or actually not, that Spitting Image declined at a paralel timeline to the return of the (new) Labor…
@tbdkuphk Most people will agree. Thatcher seemed to be the pivotal point of this show. When she went, there seemed to be no direction for this programme.
@tbdkuphk - I totally agree. The soap opera that was UK Politics basically lost its best character - and unlike Corrie or EastEnders, you can't just write someone else in.
Amazing to see the number of staunch atheists that believe in Hell where Mrs Thatcher is involved. Mind you, can we be assured there are no Socialists in hell? In which case it sound rather agreeable.
Oh, and Hitler was a socialist. Slapping "National" on the front doesn't get you out of it.
"We are enemies of today's capitalistic economic system for the exploitation of the economically weak, with its unfair salaries, with its unseemly evaluation of a human being according to wealth and property instead of personality and performance, and we are all determined to destroy this system under all conditions. In the future there must be no ranks or classes, and you must not let them begin to grow in you!" --Adolf Hitler
If it wasn't for the whole killing jews, gays and lack of a weelchair thing, Hitler would be FDR. He gets a bad reputation just because he lost the war, as he knew he would. Socialist but not soviet socialist :P
I agree with most of your points, but I have to go with Connie and deny that Hitler was a socialist. He may have supported some socialistic programmes and central planning but in other areas he favoured a high degree of privatisation. There were socialists who helped build the Nazi Party, and he eliminated them all to get support from big business. His own obsession was eugenics/racial theories, not economics, and that (as you would agree) is why he is regarded as evil.
I agree, its just not as clear cut a "the fascists are the opposite of socialists!" thing people try and make out. He himself claimed to hate socialists, but also hated capitalism, kinda a hateful dude.
Yeah, ultimately he just did not care about, much less understand, economics. He just wanted power to use to pursue his racial theories. If that meant ultimately compromising with the capitalists, that was fine for him.
Hitler was a fascist, not a socialist. I agree with you. But that does not make him as far away from a socialist as you can get.
Why do you think the world is fast becoming a neoliberal, globalist hellhole? Because socialists support liberals thinking "at least they aren't nationalists or social conservatives" and the latter back liberals saying "at least they aren't socialists". That doesn't mean neoliberalism is centrist!
@maxime32 neoliberalism and neoconservatism are far-right wing fascist ideologies and doctrines - and socialism have nothing to do with them - vice versa.
I forgot what hitler's impact on the german economy over the sound of the praise he recieved from all the world's leaders from bringing germany back from the brink of economic collapse. That is to say, are Hitler's economic policies REALLY what made his rule something we wouldn't want to repeat? If not, why bring them up? If so, what about that whole holocaust thing eh? Why judge all his policies in light of the guy's other policies? economically he was there with FDR
is FDR as bad as Hitler for his national recovery act and the bank nationalizations? he's certainly as socialist.
what about the far more socialist Clemet Attlee? Is he worse than Hitler? if its the socialism that made Hitler bad...tacking "Hitler supported this" or "hitler was part of a group which also contains members who support this" on the end of a proposition doesn't make it false or wrong. Hitler liked dogs, does liking dogs make you evil?
If Hitler was a Christian (hypothetically) would that make Christians morally equivelent to Hitler?
Any evidence that Hitler was lying when he said, repeatedly, in multiple contexts, that he was a Christian?
The meaning of an idiom like "go to hell" is independant of its literal meaning; if someone says "suck my cock" they probably don't literally mean it. Thatcher's favourite economist, Mises and Heyack, were mostly staunch atheists.
People spend so much time judging people and ideas by their labels and the 'groups' they belong to, they forget to examine their consequences. Socialism, conservatism, nazism, and Christianity are all vaguely defined as to be almost useless. If you show an idea is 'socialist' you don't show it will lead to all the other consequences of all the other ideas in that box, you don't show anything about its desirability by comparing it to the desirability of related but different ideas.
With 38,000 registered sects of Christianity in the US alone, how sure can you be that Hell won't contain people who believe as you do - even if it is for those who don't believe the truth and the truth is Jesus - which jesus is right? If it doesn't matter which sect, not much matters at all, considering some sects differ from others on almost every issue. Convinient how the one true sect probably has a church in your local area. I won't go into other religions, old or new.
Michael Heseltine really shouldnt have stabbed Thatcher in the back....
Poll tax wasnt a particularly bad idea either.. it was just the idiotic community failing to understand what's good for them. Perhaps if people wouldnt be so challenging and critical of authority, Britain would be a better place...
@Schniddo excuse me? Authority is the essentiality for order and the destruction of order has lead to a permissive and arrogant public who are too reaped in individualism and selfish interests to care about the moral, pride and structure of this country. And the NHS and free education have nothing to do with "authority" they are essential elements of our social structure. Sadly, both of them are so poor in quality they arent living up to their potential..
@Fowdy92 they should have implemented the poll tax gradually, that way there wouldn't have been sudden shocks and thus no massed riots... terrible quirk of history.
Despite what people say Maggie T was a good prime minister, she showed the Argentines who own the Falklands, she got us out of recession, she beat the IRA and made the unions weaker - we need her now TBH!!!!
This song and the way it was staged is well balanced: It criticizes Thatcher, but gives an idea of what it must have been like for her near the end of her leadership when her popularity and support dwindled. The political satire and commentary in having the House of Commons telling her to "go now" criticizes them as much as Thatcher. Considering that her resignation was not far off, this song definitely stands out among the songs from Spitting Image.
@phanface It definitely highlights how they all stabbed her in the back. She never lost a general election, but it was her own party that forced her out. Cowards
