would probably like the video if i heard the bass, but i dont, its very very low. crank it up! ;). i will check out some others to but i the bass is as silent like in this i wont.
and no, i dont want to raise the volume to max cause your voice will be far to loud. thanx anyway for helping out.

amazing! but with all these different bass notes being played some lower some higher' but still low bass' how do you know what the chord is? or hear the chord or root note ... when playing a substitute bass note[s] is this a reading thing i.e . you've got to ge reading the music and playing what you want off of what the written chord is' and if it is ADGC why is the A minor and DGC major? check out my vids i can play' i need help' will pay"" thanks.
can one start on the major or minor 3rd instead of the root noote or the fifth? I find it handy to mark the contrast between a major and minor chord with same root for example when there is Gmaj7 then Gm7 play the Bb to mark the change.
yes - you can start your line with another chord tone - you are essentially playing an inversion (voicing the chord with something other than the root note in the bass.) In fact, inversions are essential for building fluid lines that move between chords. Using the root every time starts to sound very monotonous. These exercises are made to help people get to grips with prinicples for building walking lines, but how you work them into your own playing relies on yr own style and creativity :-)
if you click on the link in the video info, it will bring you to a page on my website. There, under every video is a link that says 'walking bass 09.pdf or 'walking bass08.pdf' etc... - you simply click on that and download the file.
Thanks very much for the lessons!!, very usefull..Hey, I ve been trying to get those PDF's and mp3 from your web page, but it seems that the page doesn't work??, where can I get'em??...Thanks again!!
Very useful lesson on Autumn Leaves but can you do a post of you playing the whole song incorporating all those things you discussed in lessons 7 , 8 & 9 .
Thanks so much for doing these lessons you the boy .
Tnx allot for throwing some FREE lessons at us Mark. My teacher teaches the exact same basics that you do. (cough* and charges for it) ;)
Don't worry about the narrow minded people. As soon as they figure there is more music then just Rock they'll notice there is no way they can ever play anything other then Rock if they don't have a basic understanding of how chords are being put together in terms of intervals.
Leave them, they'll grow out of the box eventually ;)
If you wish to understand harmony and how music works, this stuff is great to know. If you want to play Jazz or to some extent Blues, you need to know this. If you want to play pumping 8th notes in a rock band like ACDC, then it is true - you don't NEED to know this, but it all helps. P.s. I love ACDC and love to play 8th note rock bass too..

dude come on u not showwing shit because yer not playin the songs back to see what the fuck yer playin...ive watched 5 of them and yer vids sucks dude
These videos are for teaching the art of walking bass. It requires that you have a certain level of understanding before we begin. I'm not teaching people how to play a song here - it's a much bigger idea than that... we need to learn the concept. and it requires the student to do the work....Something that a lot of students don't like to do.
I just became a music major at school and I need to take a walking bass audition in the fall. I had no idea where to start learning and these videos are really helping me get the basics down. But I also really need to learn about voice leading and what not, please continue this series! I do not have money to take lessons and these videos are so helpful!
He is giving walking patterns. In jazz, walking patterns are nothing but arpeggios. He really is breaking down how jazz bass players construct bass lines. Plus, he is giving a lesson as to why they choose certain notes.
remember kids, learn all ur major and minor scales, theres no substitute for it, after u learn em all ur playin will get 10 times better, i swear, just ask dave
5 stars. You are a magnificent teacher. Dave, please consider adding some lessons on subdividing a pulse with a metronome (or exercises along those lines) You teach in such a concise & simplistic way, the best way.
wow. you always leave me questionless, I have nothing (at the moment) that I can think to ask...are your bass lessons only in England? (that's what I heard)
Massachusetts? If it would make you go out of your way you don't have to...I'll be in west massachusetts for a couple weeks and then spending the remainder of August in Nantucket...

Hi Dave, tnx for super useful info!
I was wondering if you could post some explanation about bass lines that have other tone on start than root.
like G7,but it starts on D or B or something else, and good ways of connecting chords with that idea!
Again tnx and for this instructional videos they have been extremely useful!
