sure lookes like u have enough room in your basement, but i was thinking you move the storage shelf in the corner and your new bench in its place. for the sake of getting more storage from the top shelf, not much room between the ventilation and top shelf. unless it will effect the motion sensor
I just build this workbench in a 4X8 ft. size. And its great. I also put a piece of cement board that was also 4x8 for my top. As i will be using mine for glassblowing. I Love the new workbench. Thanks!
@WarrenPace -- That was the beauty of this design - I didn't have to cut the channels! :) I only needed to cut individual pieces of 2x4 wood, then the shorter pieces of wood were simply screwed into the longer pieces, with a gap inbetween serving as the "channel."
@spencewalters To establish your cross brace height calculate how high the bottom part of your cross brace should be from the floor this gives you the length of 2 x 4 you need to cut. Measure the thickness of the cross brace and subtract that from the total length of your leg and cut another piece of material for the top section of your leg. When you're cutting these pieces use the 1st piece as your sample piece to make duplicates so you have the same height all 4 corners.
@FreeDavis16 Oops yes you're right, I should have set it as four 54" braces, not three. I also decided against adding wheels to mine so I didn't need 8 of the 7 3/4" leg pieces, only needed 4. The bench is very sturdy and heavy with the given lengths, I don't think lengthening it a foot or two would have any bad effects. Be advised though, I'm not a master carpenter! :)
I finally built mine over the weekend at 30" by 5 feet. It worked out greats--solid and a terrific new work surface to spare my aching back. I used the extra 7.75 pieces 'cuz I required wheels. Thanks very much for a clever and useful design. This newbie's wife now thinks him very clever.
@dma98408 Hey glad to hear you're building one too!
Thanks for asking about the cuts - here's why it took me so long: 1) I'm a rookie at this dyi stuff, so even simple measurements took up time 2) I could only work on it for an hour or two during the occasional free week-day nights 3) I was using a handsaw, as I did not have any power cutting tools at the time. I don't recall how long each board took to actually cut, 10-20 minutes? And on top of that I took lots of breaks!
@fyoung64 I am confused about the difference in where the 7.25 and 7.75 pieces belong. I already cut all the pieces to the sizes you mentioned above but not sure which pieces go where now. Please help me out.
@fyoung64 I made the cuts that you mentioned above and was wondering where the 7.25 pieces go with this modification. I believe it may just be a typo and and that the 7.25 should be 7.75 for piece. If so Ill go run and get another 2X4 and cut it to 7.75 vice 7.25. Thanks.
I hope building it wasn't as much of a horror as the music makes it out to be! Congrats on the build and thanks for sharing. Looks like it came out alright.
Nice job! I just uploaded a video of the workbench I built this summer. Looks similar I think. :-) oh.. i don't have the cool creepy music though. lol
Thanks for the video. I'm in the planning stages of building a workbench and am watching all these YouTube videos for ideas. Great photography. The music is a bit much. Congratulations on the kid.
Thanks, I think I even have all the tools I need to do this. I just need to go buy some wood. YEAH!!! It looks easy enough for me to tackle (I have an electric saw). I need a workbench very badly. And my older daughter (she's 18) keeps doing her projects on the floor :( I think she will appreciate it also, lol. You guys that build stuff sure like your creepy/scary/suspenseful music, haha....I love it.
@lisaheath1 Thank you! The workbench is great, I've already used it for a bunch of projects and even as a card table. Only downside with my version of the table is that it won't fit through doors - it's staying in my basement for life, hehe. Whatever dimensions you choose, it should come together quicker for you with that electric saw and when it does, you should totally post results to youtube. =D Have fun!
If i ever am part of a deep space mission I will certainly expect to hear this music.

Oops! Should have said 66" or 72", not 60" or 66".

Great project but looks like you used a fourth 54" brace, no? Also, do you think I couldc push the length to 60" or even 66"?

Great video Spence!
The only material missed was the 57 inch 2x6 on the Front Top.
I'm building this same bench.
For all interested:
Use six 8' 2x4's with cuts as follows:
cut 2 of them 34.5, 34.5, 19.25, 7.75 leaving 0 inches waist each
cut 3 of them 54, 33, 7.25 leaving 1.25 inches waist each
cut 1 of them 33, 19.25, 19.25, 7.75, 7.75, 7.75 leaving 2.25 inches waist each.
Also 8 foot studs (2x4's) can be cheaper..you just may need to hand pick them.
Again Thanks for the video!!!

@fyoung64 what does it mean when you say leaving 1.25 or 2.25 inch waist each.

@tonydeanda I think he meant "waste" as in less left-over material
