  • Man, I want a tuba like that, not the 90 year old relic I have :(

  • Truly fantastic!

  • LOL this guy aint really all that amazing he misses quite a few notes out

  • incredible--thanks for posting

  • not really a fan of this version..maybe due to the crappy audio quality. but im not complaining. im very sure he is a great player.:)

  • for the solo part, i wish he did the whole thing

  • he is like Zidane in tUBA PLAYING, JUST MARVELLOUS

  • its an EEb tuba with a perantucci mouthpiece

  • I had never heard this composition but I am happy that I now have another tuba concerto to look for.

  • LAMO...his eyebrows!!! HAHAHAHA

but still that was a totally a pimp solo!

  • hey! where is the first movement???

  • i wunder if hes playing a bf tuba or the other ?

  • 俺この楽譜持ってるんだけど、

    ぜんぜんできねえ。

    難しすぎる。。

  • I personally don't like the timbre of his tone but i can't lie and say its not good lol

  • i play tuba in a 7th\8th grade band, man i wish i could be this talented

  • @Tubaroks97 It's a matter of practicing... When I was your age I wouldn't dream of doing Gregson! Keep up the work!

  • @Tubaroks97 All you have to do is practice for many, many hours.

  • @Tubaroks97 Don't worry, if you keep on going in band and really care about what you do, you will become a very talented player, I cared and became fairly talented on my own (never had a private instructor), but I encourage you to get a private instructor. Once you get into High School is when you really begin to develop and have more opportunities to play. I strongly encourage you to play solo pieces as well. Just stick with it and have fun!

  • He has amazing tone!

  • very good

  • すげWW

  • amazing. holy frickin cow, that was amazing to just sit and listen to.

  • muito legal

  • very good.bravo

  • I performed this concerto in London, with Gregson conducting, so I know it well. He is playing an Eb tuba. It is hard to tell exactly which - it doesn't look like a Besson or Yamaha but could be Miraphone. His mouthpiece looks like a Bach 18 but cannot be certain. He would have a better sound if he lost that vibrato and used a Helleburg mouthpiece, like a Wick 3L or Schilke 66.

  • Mouth piece looks like a parentucci 88 to me. Could be wrong though

  • wat kind mouthpiece is he playing in need of a good mouthpiece

  • get a bach, bro

  • omg no........bach for tuba are completely out of tune...you need too pratice.... Bruno Tilz are better.....

  • looks like perantucci

  • This guy is amazingly talented. He looks like Elliot from the show "Just Shoot Me" though.

  • perfect! amazing!

  • BEST TUBA PLAYER EVER!

  • This tuba is in Eb?

    THIS IS BEAUTIFUL

  • Im preforming this tomorrow :D

  • so how'd u do?

  • good big tone, especially for an Eb

  • alguien tiene el full score de ese concierto? les agradeceria!! un saludo de uruguay!

  • just look at his eye brows

  • he plays so nicely and expressively

  • He sounds great. I'd like to hear the douches trashing him to play this piece. "Broken coffee machine?" I wonder how a broken coffee machine sounds?

  • he is amaizing

  • He's very good. Extremely good.

Not on the same planet as Roger Bobo or John Fletcher, but outstanding nonetheless.

  • He probebly plays very good, but the sound he has on his tuba, doen't inspire me, If I listen to some parts, you can hear de notes rolling/shaking....

I hope its not converted by my pc.... I play Bb and Eb, both besson sovereing, and the sound on these instrument are amazing, espesialy the new one's

    and my mouthpiece is perantucci

  • he plays very good but he sounds like a broken coffee machine

  • I PLAY THE TUBA!

  • told ya he is the best

  • Simply the best tuba player I've ever heard!

  • try Baadsvik

  • 音色很棒~~~

  • We´ve played it more faster!

but the tuba player is very very good!!!

  • more faster isnt more better it is almost best temp for this concerto

  • WHERE IS THIS?

  • its in malta my friend

  • its a very small island in the middle of the mediterranean sea, just below scicly. we are only 400,000 people

  • i wacth this video every day!

  • i don't want to see arnold jacobs!

  • best tuba player ever!

  • I don't think you ever heard of Arnold Jacobs.

  • tuba mouthpiece

    duh!

  • does anyone what type of mouthpiece he plays on?

  • it looks like a shilke

  • he is my idol!

  • I PLAY THE TUBA!

  • that is a EEb

and it is unbelieveable the tone quality that he can get is amazing and also the feeling he puts into his playing is amazing as well

wish i could play like that hopefully will be able to in a few months

  • It's been a few months, can you play like him? I think not!

  • thats an E tuba

  • Bravo!!

  • Quite a few splits in this video not the standard i was expecting.

  • Are any of you tubists or just folks who own tubas? Jake played the York with a small mouthpiece and played extremely high, Bill Bell played an old BBb King and played high. If you have the chops you can play just about anything on anything. Practice.

  • AMEN!

  • Wow,I played it in 1993 but just with piano not with orchestra...many thanks for posting.

  • can u play this on a Bb tuba?

  • take everything up a whole tone.

  • is it possible to play this peice on a Bb tuba?

  • Why wouldn't it be possible.

I can play this on my CC. Why would a BB-Flat be any different?

  • You can. Range on a brass instrument is theoretically unlimited, restricted only by the range of the musician. TonayD is right on the money. The Eb and F tubas are great for getting up there in range, and makes it easier so the musician is focused on making music, not hitting the right partials.

  • great. amazing, the sound everything!!! Great work!

  • hm. Nicely done. Eb was a good choice, great high chops!

  • for the 1st movement I advise a C tuba, the movement is in C..lol

  • are you being sarcastic? all tubas play in the key of C... it doesnt matter if its a Bb, C, Eb or F tuba. The only major difference are the fingerings. Plus the high notes in this piece would require more air and work if you played it on a contrabass tuba.

  • Im a tuba performance major who has done this piece several times

If you do the concerto in entirety, then a Eb/F would be the best, because of the high Ebs in the 2nd movement and you will get tired like i did on my CC having it at the end of an hour recital

However, the first movement works best on CC (which is played more than the rest of the concerto because of the tessitura. Face it, F/Eb are more speciality horns.....for higher playing

  • well I wouldnt kno cause i dont have the music infront of me but obviously F and Eb are for higher playing, they're a bass tuba. But whatever tuba used is up to the performer, they could have both tubas on stage if they wanted to

  • I'm sorry, but that is incorrect - C tubas play in the key of C - Bb Tubas play in the key of Bb, etc. The Eb and F tubas being the smallest of the four can play up pretty high with relative ease.

  • Tubas are not transposing instruments - tuba music is written at concert pitch (unless you're dealing with some brass band stuff or the occasional "tuba in f" thing) - so, therefore, a written C is a C irrespective of what tuba you are using - the fingering might be different, but it is the same pitch

  • who is the idiot who gave this a thumbs down? this person is right... tubas DO NOT transpose. when you see a C, you sound a C. it's simple.

  • It depends on the type of tuba.

  • Incorrect. Tubas are self transposing. I've done the Gregson several times myself. It isn't too bad on a smaller CC like the Meinl Weston 2145 but I felt a little more confidence playing the high Eb on an F tuba. The piece probably works best on an Eb tuba because the overtones can allow the sustained Eb to be played in just intonation with the piano, but a great player can really pull this off on any horn. Eb/F has a little leaner sound, though.

  • Not to sound like a dueche, it's in good taste i promise, I just wanted to let you know it's a high E, not Eb. Just putting it out there.

  • Agreed. It is slightly easier to maintain great tone quality in the upper register on an Eb or F. I learned this first on a C so that is what I continue to use for its performance.

  • Its definently a Eb, and as someone smart said, the fingerings of BBb and Eb are the same in middle registry. I would guess its an

  • Go on Itunes and download Jame Gourlay playing. It's in the British Tuba Concerto's Album I believe. Either way thats one of the best recordings of Gregson I've heard

  • I have a version with John Fletcher accompianied by Besses o' th' Barns Band ... That's also very good, and Gregson did originally write it for Tuba and Brass Band ...

  • Fletch plays some wrong ones in that though.... phenomenal player though!!

  • I'd go as far as saying it's prtty much definitive. Gourlay does the best version by far.

omg how fast do they take the ending in this version!

    This guy's not gud.

  • Anyone have the mp3 for this... I love it

  • very nice...i played this concert in the last semester in F tuba, very relaxed and you Eb version is very good.. you have the orchestra parts ?

  • This is definitely an Eb... My guess is either a Yamaha YEB632, Besson 980 or 982. And by the way - he is doing the fingerings for an Eb.

  • I would doubt its a Yamaha, I dont see many pro tubist using Yamahas. and many Eb tubas have the same design as in the vid.

  • Er Sergio Carolino uses yamahas, but he is spnsoredby thm or something! He's one of the best on the continent.

  • Nice control.

  • nope, it's a BBb i got my tuner and saw the fingerings for many of his notes. It's a GREAT sound for a BBb. I'm a tuba player as well, but I play a C tuba.

  • It's a Eb because the middle range of the Eb and BBb have similar fingerings.

  • Many fingerings of the BBb are the same as Eb. Just like a CC and F. I play CC and Eb. Not the best combo. I screw up fingerings every now and then on Eb. Its annoying. Plus my band music for Eb transposed and in treble. Im technicly using trumpet fingering to play the Eb

  • Definitely an Eb tuba

  • Do u have the pappers of that music? xD =P kiding...

  • amazing =P

  • sweet!! what kind of tuba is this...its kind of odd

  • I think it's an Eb-tuba. Sounds crappy - ish ;-P

  • wht does crappy-ish suppose to mean

  • YES INDEED IT DOES

  • how does an Eb sound "crappy-ish"? Just because its smaller doesnt make it worse.

  • I'm playing this concerto now, and the fingerings that he is using seem to suggest that he's playing a compensating BBb tuba. A really good question, I hope that this will be of help.

  • Definately a eeb

  • You can say that again!

  • Awesome

  • thats aweosme!!! but man, be careful!!! cause gregson is a... you know what. be careful. when my firend did it for a symphony, he couldnt put the video anywhere, or they would press charges!
