@Tubaroks97 Don't worry, if you keep on going in band and really care about what you do, you will become a very talented player, I cared and became fairly talented on my own (never had a private instructor), but I encourage you to get a private instructor. Once you get into High School is when you really begin to develop and have more opportunities to play. I strongly encourage you to play solo pieces as well. Just stick with it and have fun!
I performed this concerto in London, with Gregson conducting, so I know it well. He is playing an Eb tuba. It is hard to tell exactly which - it doesn't look like a Besson or Yamaha but could be Miraphone. His mouthpiece looks like a Bach 18 but cannot be certain. He would have a better sound if he lost that vibrato and used a Helleburg mouthpiece, like a Wick 3L or Schilke 66.
He probebly plays very good, but the sound he has on his tuba, doen't inspire me, If I listen to some parts, you can hear de notes rolling/shaking....
I hope its not converted by my pc.... I play Bb and Eb, both besson sovereing, and the sound on these instrument are amazing, espesialy the new one's
Are any of you tubists or just folks who own tubas? Jake played the York with a small mouthpiece and played extremely high, Bill Bell played an old BBb King and played high. If you have the chops you can play just about anything on anything. Practice.
You can. Range on a brass instrument is theoretically unlimited, restricted only by the range of the musician. TonayD is right on the money. The Eb and F tubas are great for getting up there in range, and makes it easier so the musician is focused on making music, not hitting the right partials.
are you being sarcastic? all tubas play in the key of C... it doesnt matter if its a Bb, C, Eb or F tuba. The only major difference are the fingerings. Plus the high notes in this piece would require more air and work if you played it on a contrabass tuba.
Im a tuba performance major who has done this piece several times
If you do the concerto in entirety, then a Eb/F would be the best, because of the high Ebs in the 2nd movement and you will get tired like i did on my CC having it at the end of an hour recital
However, the first movement works best on CC (which is played more than the rest of the concerto because of the tessitura. Face it, F/Eb are more speciality horns.....for higher playing
well I wouldnt kno cause i dont have the music infront of me but obviously F and Eb are for higher playing, they're a bass tuba. But whatever tuba used is up to the performer, they could have both tubas on stage if they wanted to
I'm sorry, but that is incorrect - C tubas play in the key of C - Bb Tubas play in the key of Bb, etc. The Eb and F tubas being the smallest of the four can play up pretty high with relative ease.
Tubas are not transposing instruments - tuba music is written at concert pitch (unless you're dealing with some brass band stuff or the occasional "tuba in f" thing) - so, therefore, a written C is a C irrespective of what tuba you are using - the fingering might be different, but it is the same pitch
Incorrect. Tubas are self transposing. I've done the Gregson several times myself. It isn't too bad on a smaller CC like the Meinl Weston 2145 but I felt a little more confidence playing the high Eb on an F tuba. The piece probably works best on an Eb tuba because the overtones can allow the sustained Eb to be played in just intonation with the piano, but a great player can really pull this off on any horn. Eb/F has a little leaner sound, though.
Agreed. It is slightly easier to maintain great tone quality in the upper register on an Eb or F. I learned this first on a C so that is what I continue to use for its performance.
Go on Itunes and download Jame Gourlay playing. It's in the British Tuba Concerto's Album I believe. Either way thats one of the best recordings of Gregson I've heard
I have a version with John Fletcher accompianied by Besses o' th' Barns Band ... That's also very good, and Gregson did originally write it for Tuba and Brass Band ...
nope, it's a BBb i got my tuner and saw the fingerings for many of his notes. It's a GREAT sound for a BBb. I'm a tuba player as well, but I play a C tuba.
Many fingerings of the BBb are the same as Eb. Just like a CC and F. I play CC and Eb. Not the best combo. I screw up fingerings every now and then on Eb. Its annoying. Plus my band music for Eb transposed and in treble. Im technicly using trumpet fingering to play the Eb
I'm playing this concerto now, and the fingerings that he is using seem to suggest that he's playing a compensating BBb tuba. A really good question, I hope that this will be of help.
thats aweosme!!! but man, be careful!!! cause gregson is a... you know what. be careful. when my firend did it for a symphony, he couldnt put the video anywhere, or they would press charges!
Man, I want a tuba like that, not the 90 year old relic I have :(
