I prefer torque over top speed because a speed over 65 km/h on a small scooter is fragile: such a speed is not easy to keep, small hills and wind can easily slow you down significantly at this speed.
More torque on startups is better in my opinion, because you can get faster up to the normal speed of urban traffic.
I admit, though, that a 45 km/h restriction is frustrating when you know it could easily go 10-15 km/h faster...
I have a question. I've read that you can normally expect a top speed increase from 45 km/h to 70/80 km/h on most 50cc's...
While you stated just 4-6 km/h increase.
My question is: Is that because you had a worn belt when de-resticting it? Because the resitricer is smaller than normal on the C3? OR because what I read was bullshit? :)
I'm an amateur, so I'm grateful for any help on this.
While restricted, my C3 could go about 63 km/h. Unrestricted it would get close to 70. I'm in Canada. I heard that in other countries, small scooters have a more severe restriction, around 45 km/h.
But removing the restricting washer is not the best way to enhance the performance of this scooter. Make sure you read all the text I wrote in the first and second videos (click on the "more infos" link to read it.
I don't have a C3 though, its a CPI Oliver... But I guess the basic mechanical stuff are the same on all.
Yes I know there are a lot one can do, but I'm not a mechanic, and I do not want to blow it up:P The washer seems l like a very easy "first step" at least, and maybe I will go further if I'm not satisfied.
One more thing: I understand you sacrifice torque for top speed with this method, how significant would you say it is? Norway is not flat:D
Ahh! That stupid governor! I havent tried to remove it yet but you make it look like a fairly simple process. Kudos to you. Thank you for posting these videos. (PS I wish my French was as good as your English.) Peace brother.
Thanks mate that was really helpful i bout a CPI Aragon 50CC to get me around the town slighlty faster than my car but it seems that its struggles on hills and stuff with my weight so this has really helped I got a 15 Mph increase!!!
Hi zaran1, I would like to know how you actually tighten the belt it seem as though you skipped that part when you changed scenes around time 2min 50secs.
Also do you know any other mods that can be done to increase speed, if so by how many km/h
watch 4 of 5 again mate, a text pops up on the screen and says its self tightening when you restart the scooter. watch it again to make sure though, i can't be bothered looking at it again, it was very good though.
I am no scooter expert. This C3 is the first scooter I owned, so I cannot say for sure. I think that most 50cc 2stroke are restricted when you buy them.
you did an awesome job explaining that. all videos were helpful. I was going to buy a c3 *used* I was impatient and got a *new* Sprint. Are these tomos a55's restricted? you mentioned in 1of5 re. videos about the 2strokes..
Bravo! You did a fine job. Very effective English!
The tool you call a boa constrictor, we a strap wrench.
This mod improves gear ratio by slightly increasing maximum diameter of front pulley.
You can also put a short length of pipe over the end of your ratchet's handle to help loosen & tighten the bolt.
We can all make our own special tool by measuring between the bolts & the area of the housing and using 1/8 to 1/4" steel or aluminum plate with pins or bolts to lock the front pulley.
i did not watch the other parts, but i assume that nut is connected to the crank. if so, you can pull the spark plug and stuff some clean nylon rope into the plug hole. not all of it, you need to pull it back out. when you turn the crank, the piston will hit the rope and you can tighten it to your hearts content. pull the rope out, put the plug back in and you're back in business.
hi!! I was wondering if you really needed that special tool with the belt on it, because i think if you hold the variator in place tough enough than a normal wrench will get the job done? Please comment back.
You're right, but that "special tool" is just a strap wrench and comes in handy for other jobs as well. Technically if you want to use the proper tool Yamaha sells a spanner that fits into the two holes that are 180 apart. Alternately you can stuff a rag into the thing so it wont turn, but that's usually more trouble than its worth. The nut is pretty tight.
mrbadx19. washer between the two halves of the rear pulley would stop it closing all the way together which would restrict acceleration not top speed. The rear pulley opens (reducing the radius = more speed) as the front pulley closes (increasing the radius = more speed) think of a ten speed bike, bigger sprocket at the front smaller sprocket at the rear equals more top speed, as long as you have the power to turn the pedals.
Great videos. I intend to use the technique on my C3 ASAP. It is good to see someone whose motive is the sharing of information rather than the selling of it.
very good videos, i watched all 5, i was wondering if there is a similar washer between the pulley faces on the rear pulley (that nasty 1mm washer)where the clutch is, if you can narrow that distance, you'll get even more speed (lose acceleration though) i've known of these variable ratio trannys for 30 years.
You can also derestrict your cat muffler in an easy way !!!!!

do you need tighten the up before you put the cover back in? if so how do you tighten it back up?
mccartypaulaf 1 year ago
dude, i snapped my belt,
have to take the variator off to put it on so i think i'm going to take the washer off
if it has one cause its a chinese scooter that has lasted 3500 miles in less than 1 year before problems, like new tire, new belt, and new battery.
great video!

Results may vary. You will probably gain 4 to 6 km/h.

How much faster does the scooter go after taking off the restrictor?
mimsy34 3 years ago
It depends on riding conditions, rider weight and transmission belt wear. It's around 5km/h faster.

or, like i said, you can just stuff some rope in the plug hole and not monkey around with it.

sorry, i didnt mean to come off like a d*** but i guess reading it today i did.
im just trying to spread the word on this trick. its a very good one whenever you need to keep the crank from turning for any reason.
