my all-time favorite song from high school! sogroovy/funky/jammin'! i'm going on 40 and i still play this song in my head when i'm feeling sexy! thank you, tamara! (and prince!)

thanks for posting- my kids will soon be begging me to get out of the "wayback" machine! :)
The guitar player in this group (Oliver Leiber) went on to produce a few of Paula Abdul's best known hits- specifically "Straight Up", "Forever Your Girl", "The Way That You Love Me" and "Cold Hearted".
One of many Killer guitar solos by Jessie Johnson on tis cut, Post the Long version at the end if you listen you can here him say "Don't Fuck With Me"
Hey Phat I would like your opinion on this when it comes to pure guitar playing talent pick between Prince,JJ and a surprise third option STANLEY JORDAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@dal4018 Prince was all over the place, but i think by this time Jesse felt he needed to do this himself, U have to remember Prince would change his name a lot when he helped or worked with others. So it is very hard to say. I love them both though
@bigphat200 Hey Phat your right about Prince being all over the place he helped a little known jazz artist get started named Eric Reed a sax player he played background guitar for this guy.Even wrote some songs for this guy late 80's or early 90's
This is 3rd, 4th generation Prince....Prince begat The Time, The Time begat Jesse J., & Jesse J. begat Ta Mara. This was a Jesse production after his solo success kicked in when The Time members went their separate ways after Purple Rain. And there's no mistaking that it's Jesse playing thoese guitar lines...
@dal4018 I don't know, not knowing the difference between Prince and Jesse sound is like confusing your wife twin sister for her.... close but no cigar. Jesse staggered every note in his cords. Prince staggers every 3rd or 4th cord I know this sounds extremely geeky but i love this sound. u could be right, but.............
@bigphat200 Hey Phat I'am listening to this song and I may be wrong and u could be right I was listening to Skillet and that definitely was JJ playing bass on that classic.
@dal4018 Am i a fan of Alexander O'Neal.. Yes and no. i like his songs but for some reason i disdain the man. I don't feel right about him at all. Strange maybe, but true
@bigphat200 WHY WHAT DO U HAVE AGAINST THE MAN WHO WAS TO BE THE ORIGINAL LEAD FOR THE TIME.CHECK OUT HIS BIO WARNER BROS DIDN'T WANT HIM AS THE LEAD APPARENTLY THEY COULDN'T SEE PAST HIS DARK SKIN COLOR AND QUITE POSSIBLY SEE HE COULD HAVE BEEN THE SECOND COMING OF THE LATE GREAT OTIS REDDING.
Oh my GODDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I cant believe that after like 8 years I finally, by chance, found this song!!!!!!!!!!!! . . . . . . this song is so very simple, but its so damn funky and str8 to tha point and perfectly succinct!!!!! . . . My heads exploding now and I cant really type anymore . . . . .thanxxxxx for posting this!!!!!!!!!!!!! Will - nyc
Are U kidding? A lot of folk in NYC loved this cut. I still have the 12" . The 12" is HOTT...especially when she whispers "Don't fuck with me" at the very end.
She now goes by her real name, Margie Cox. She released a single written by Prince called "Standing at the Altar". It was released on 1-800-NEW-FUNK in1994. The full album was never released
All I can say is Prince had a hand in a lot of groups back in the day. They all carry that sound and style that only Prince can make... I love this video.
Great song! I worn this track out in the 80's. One of my favorites. I have it on vinyl, looking for the CD. Thanks for the bio as well. YOu know your music. :-)
Like others have said, the music back then was about having a good time, some of it was a little cheezy, but a lot was pretty good. But that seemed to change with the intro. of gangst rap and grunge rock in the 90's. The record companies need to get back to the carefree attitude that use to exist during the 80's, and stop promoting all the negative stuff, a lot of which includes too much sexual content.
OMG! This was my jam. I can't believe this video is on YouTube. My brother was a member of this band when I was a kid and I just about thought he walked on water back then. LOL!!!!
This was my song back when I was in 5th grade. I own the album. :) My best friend just went to a concert last night in Minnesota ...Tamara, Maserati and other's performed and my girl got on stage and sang!!! I would have given my pinky finger to be there.
That was funky stuff at the time. I can't believe someone remember this song. I got the title of the song wrong and I never remember the name of the group.
It was about having fun and it wasn't as serious as it is now. I guess everything changed in the 90's and got dark quickly. It killed a lot of acts. I appreciate these bands more than ever
Cosmictalk is correct!! This is a 100% Jesse Johnson Production, not Prince. After breaking off from the Time, Jesse produced a string of hits on his own and under his own publishing company (JWJ Productions). Those 1980s synths and electronics really take you back
What a jammin tune - really takes you back to good times. 1985 - what a great year, especially with the tunes coming out of the MSP's Prince "stable" - Shelia E, Apollonia 6, Morris Day and the Time. GREAT MEMORIES
Wow. Didn't think I would ever hear this song again. I loved it back in the day. Started singing along word for word like I heard it yesterday. This was high school for me. Anything remotely related to prince, the time, sheila e etc. were in tight rotation on my turntable.
I was a senior in high school when this came out I believe and when I went to college I played drums to this in a recital and we jammed as also this song was. Thanks for the info on them being in the same stable as Prince, The Time, The Family etc. because I didn't know at the time though the sound should've been a dead giveaway.

lol, don't forget about the original VIDEO SOUL with smiling donnie simmpson. true, the 80s were a special big, shoulder pad era where cross dressing and sex were typical lovejoys spread across the screen BUT IN A SULTRY, SOPHISTICATED WAY.
As long as I have the wisdom and confidence of now, but I would miss my friends and godchildren. But I would do it for a week like in fantasy island, call mister Rorake
CAN SOMEONE FROM THE UK(or anywhere)PLEASE HELP ME FIND THE SONG BELOW & EMAIL IT TO ME AS AN MP3?
"God(instrumental)"by Prince&The Revolution.
It played during the scene in Purple Rain where Prince & Appolonia were getting it on. It has to be the instrumental version, its 7 minutes long. It was only released in the UK. The vocal version of "God" is totally different. When I found it I couldn't download it off UK websites.
I love the look and sound of Minneapolis and Prince! He had quite a flock of artists in the 80's!Love em! The music(so called) of today is generic CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WAR PRINCE AND COMPANY!!!!!!!!!
I miss those days where you part of a FUNK scene whether it was Minneapolis, Dayton, or Cameo in the 1980's and it was all races, sexes and creeds you could let your freak flag fly unlike this uniform thuggery of commerical rap and rock music.I thank Prince, Jesse Ta Mara and all those talented musicians who made it easier to find a tribe of people to belong in.
If anyone is looking for the 12" version of this song on MP3, hit me up with your email address. Also, I have it also available on my imeem . com profile page for embedding onto your MySpace pages. I'll try and get it to you as soon as I can.
This was the jam when I was a freshman in high school! Those were the days when I thought I was the s*** with my jheri curl and blue eyeliner! Thanks for the trip down memory lane :-)
This was / still is the jam. Make no mistake about it. The 80's were the best. The times and music can't be beat. Thanks for posting. I love it. Peace Out

lol, don't forget about the original VIDEO SOUL with smiling donnie simmpson. true, the 80s were a special big, shoulder pad era where cross dressing and sex were typical lovejoys spread across the screen BUT IN A SULTRY, SOPHISTICATED WAY.

As long as I have the wisdom and confidence of now, but I would miss my friends and godchildren. But I would do it for a week like in fantasy island, call mister Rorake

Jesse Johnson rocks the guitar solo!
PLEASE help me. Thanks!

I love it. Peace Out
