I didn't say that you need 50,000 nukes to destroy a country. In reality, with the US population so dense that you wouldn't need that many warheads to begin with. Just hit all the major cities and you'll get all the small towns at the same time. that's the beauty of nuclear weapons - they are so powerful that you need only a little to destroy a lot. That wouldn't have happened, the USSR knew that it would have been impossible to invade the U.S, due to the U.S large military and the amount of weapons in the Country.
The U.S wouldn't have invaded the USSR either, Russia alone would have been far too large to cover.

@liamuk08 I agree 100%. The Red Army was far too large to conduct a successful land campaign against the USSR. When it came to air power and navy NATO was much more powerful, but land it's doubtful that anything good would come.

putin himself stated that Russia needs NEW weapons to counter the missile shield.
It is also quite difficult to make countermeasures against a missile shield, as there is only so much you can put up into the warhead before it becomes too costly to produce, or too complex to operate.
