would someone be so kind as to help me? im just getting into scott walker and id like to purchase a album of his. i was wondering...which album would be the best introduction to his work?
@punkrockerRHCP80 Scott, Scott 2, or Scott 4 are probably the best to start with. Boy Child is a good compilation, except it doesn't have any Jacques Brel covers.
Masterful... Such warm tones and feeling. Probably my favourite song on the album as I always return to it whenever I need comfort and it gives it!! "And again, again, again.."
Seems to me, from my limited point of view, that the old and the new (from Mr Walker) comes from the same place. Beautiful, sensual, human expression. Can't imagine what more people want fro, their artists.
Makes me sad to think of great times past of when i was little in the late 60s and seeeing Scott Walker and hundreds of other stars with the great Simon Dee on his tv show ,many of whom are no longer with us including Simon himself
I feel the same way.I cannot relate o his laer work at all. His earlier work seemed to be the soundtrack to 1000 broken love affairs and mirrored the inner torment of lost loves in bedsit-land. He was the voice of all of people with cracked black hearts, and his words eased the pain. Love the lyrics "Towers of my naked shinee like a dime, and i need your laugh "so many people would have taken the obvious and sang I need your love. Noooo Scotts, done it again, and come up wth someething unique !!
@psychodamned Most sources quote that line as: "Can't you see the towers of mine they could shine like a dime." I admit, "they could" does sound like "naked" the way he phrases it.
@psychodamned I can understand that you have a hard time relating to the 'new Scott', but if you listen closely to 'It's Raining Today', the violins are clearing pointing to his musical future. Never before in the history of pop music, did a song entertain the 20th century cluster chord so eerily blanketing the background. It's a chord straight out of avant-garde composers of the day. (I'm thinking Ligeti) On some level, his newest music isn't really that different. But thats MHO :)

@psychodamned I just can't relate to his lyrics like I used too. Its all good stuff, I just prefer the older stuff. His modern lyrics are more peoeticly inclined but no one only scott can interprate them . .
Scott's got such a great voice. I almost wish he'd release another album in this vein, but then we'd have to miss out on another Tilt or The Drift. Regardless, I'm sure anything Scott puts out will be incredible (even though he was pretty bad in the 70s).
i know what you mean but ni think then 67-70 era is best left as what it is. to hear scott trying to ignite that kind of wok wouldnt work again in his later years i think personally. im fascinated by tilt and the drift and climate of hunter and go back to them occasionally and get alot from them but the scott i love remains the tragically romantic doomed forever in a spiderweb of loneliness in his early 20s found in his first 4 solo albums
@jakehudd I have been moved by many comments people have been leaving on Scott's videos but I have to say yours left me speechless. " (...) but the scott i love remains the tragically romantic doomed forever in a spiderweb of loneliness in his early 20s found in his first 4 solo albums." Closest thing to my personal feelings I ever read. THANK YOU.
my dad whose a massive devotee was helping arrange the pictures and portraits to be arranged in his place of work. he printed off the lyrics to this song, got them framed and put them up. no-one knew the song obiviously but is a nice thought that hamging on the wall of the education board where we live has an often unmentioned piece of scott brillance hanging from the wall
Ah you DID load up this one like you said you were gonna ! Well done ; i listen to the album at home but you bring 'em to the attention of the unenlightened ! Oh, & doesnt the intro orchestration remind you of Witchita Lineman by Glen Campbell ?
I had to go and listen to "Wichita Lineman" here on YT, cause I hadn't heard it in a long time, and you are so right, the intros are very similar indeed! :)
Wonderful song!

The four songs he did off Night Flights are amazing, The Electrician in particular may be the most frightening song i've ever heard.
