Is that Carlos Santana on lead guitar? Some of those male chorus harmonies sound laughingly CHEESY! But it's Joni, and it's great as usual. Blackkendoll, U DA MAN thanks!
Had another listen to this. It does get better over time. This is one of Joni's CDs that I hadn't gotten into much. I love James Taylor's singing in the background. It reminds me of an updating of "Blonde in the Bleachers". Yeah, you can't hold the hand of a rock 'n roll man (James Taylor) for very long..... By the time she sang "Man to Man", she'd moved on.
If you know Joni, you know that she doesn't ever try to make a hit. Her albums are like journal entries for everything affecting her life at the time. She fell in love big time with bassist Larry Klein and were together for just about a decade or so.
This album is an absolute masterpiece

Gotta disagree with all the griping. The woman says things no one can in ways no one can and this...is no exception. Amazing song...

Perhaps Rolling Stone magazine was on to something about Joni after all ! Hah!
"Drift with the empty gladness" Uh yup, I've done that a few times! Heh, heh!

@tonto4848 I thought this was when Michael Landau was doing guitar work for her. Of course, Luke did as well.

Love you, Joni, but not one of your better songs. It feels like she was trying too hard to make a hit.
