@RetroChris15 Correction: Chrono Trigger is a turn based RPG by Square soft.Square Soft basically wrote the book on console RPG's.They revolutionized the genre with games like Chrono Trigger and the Final Fantasy series.
But dont take my word for it Google it.
Wikipedia,Gamespot and IGN all classify it under the RPG genre .
Don't ever try and correct me about this game son you will get schooled.
I was talking about the Zelda series, not about Chrono Trigger. Obviously whoever played or knows anything about Chrono Trigger can instantly tell that it's an RPG. There's no need to state the obvious.
I apologize for not clarifying myself when I said "It's", when I was trying to refer to your comment about Zelda not being an RPG.
This actually the first game I've ever played. This game shits on Final Fantasy Series All together. Chrono Trigger Is still my favorite game of all time.
2:19 used the SNES's special MODE7 wich allowed games like Mario Kart and F-Zero to have good graphix... Chrono Trigger used Mode 7 particularly for that level its very short but amazingly they made it happen. An F-Zero styled race in an rpg doesn't get more better than that. SNES constantly pushed its limits amazing little consle it was. Not even the SEGA could compete against mode7 or transparencies. Mode 7 was used for some endings demo videos as well. :)
Should check out marche88's channel. Up and coming Lp'er and really needs some help. Check it out if you want to see Chrono trigger on the snes version of the game.
@rtc7788 Really :( Sorry. Then type into the search box "bobblewobblesqueeg improvised chrono trigger medley" and click on the video the video with the title "Improvised Chrono Trigger Medley" (second one I think) and go to 2:00. That's garranteed to work
@avitron142 Found it, pretty decent covers. Although i feel his tempo is a bit rushed on some songs. I still prefer Verdegrand and Zorsy covers, they're alot more clean.
@rtc7788 Verdegrand's version is with a collab, that makes it a lot easier; and Zorsy had the sheet music. This guy did it from scratch. Regardless, his videos should have more views, even if it's not the best cover. Thanx for checking it out though!
@rtc7788 Don't get me wrong, Verdegrand is an AMAZING pianist. I just also feel that Bobblewobblesqueeg is very much underrated. And Zorsy said the same :)
@ForsakenZOL sadly with all the new technology super computers graphix advancements in computer sciences faster computers solid state (fast) drives... i agree our technology has improved but it hasn't been put to much good use or even to its limits these games went beyond the limits and thats why they were amazing especially the super fx chip. now games are just hack slash pirate copies of other tittles with little inovation or remakes with shittier music and better graphix. sad...games suck. :C
if they made a virtual console version of it they wouldn't have made as much money off the ds version! but yeah, that would be sweet. i've still got the ps1 version. (and the ds one too. heh.)
6) Lavos is a cakewalk. My first time facing him, I basically sneezed on him and he fell over. Very anticlimactic way to end the game.
7) It takes a very long time to figure out what the main plot line of the story is supposed to be since it takes you all over the place before you even figure out what Lavos is or where it came from. Before then- and even afterwards- you are on an endless amount of sidequests that have little to nothing to do with reaching the outcome.
4) Nearly the entire game is a sidequest and no bearing on the outcome. You can beat the final boss about 1/10 of the way into the game and skip everything, making it all moot.
5) What's my motivation? Again with the character development, I really have no insight as to why Chrono even cares about Lavos. Is he altruistic? I have no idea. When he (briefly) dies, it barely effects the game at all and I was never attached enough to him to miss him.
@Ant1Live Now, I do respect that you have a different opinion than mine, and I welcome debates on this, but I just find that very few of your points make sense in my opinion, except for #5, and to an extent, partially #1.
*sigh* Fine, I'll prepare to get flamed. Yes, it is a GOOD game, BUT it is highly flawed...
1) Very shallow character development. The only player worth becoming attached to is Frog/Glenn.
2) Repetitive battle system. They take too long even for weak enemies. The battle music constantly stops and restarts as you battle different enemies. Most of the time all you do is keep pressing the A button.
3) Easy bosses. Not only are they quite easy, but they take forever to die. Again, just...
@LolGui First time I ever played this game was just the other week, so it is fresh in my mind. I beat it within just a couple of days. I never overleveled. I went through the game, including the side quests (as far as I know, I probably even missed a few) and I only beat the Black Omen once. In fact, aside from the very, very, very beginning when I was trying to get comfortable with the battle system, I didn't grind at all, I simply went through the game and beat it. I think most of...
@LolGui ...the difficulty that is reported in certain bosses comes from people who remember it from their childhood. I never played the game as a child, so that may be why I found my first time through to be quite easy in comparison to others.
@Ant1Live Well the only reason you would get flamed is because you said "it is highly flawed". You should have said "it is highly flawed to me" because not everyone will feel the same way about it as you.
@AsMhMoOt That is fundamentally insane. Go ahead and love a flawed game, but if you can't recognize the flaws, then you are a subculturally hypnotized fan boy.
@Ant1Live Not really I just have a different opinion then you. I don't see the flaws that you do is that wrong? No it just means we see things differently. You act like what you say is just the absolute truth and that everyone else is wrong on the matter.
@Ant1Live what the hell are u talking about this is a great game it was revolutionary to RPGs and people thought it was great back then so nostalgia doesnt play a part on y people like this game alot
@littlebigplanet456 I don't agree with your opinion, and your assertion regarding nostalgia is unbased and unrealistic. I'd rather not say much more, or the trolls will flood in and obfuscate this short conversation.
One of the few games in histroy rated 10/10 in every magazine....Incredible game, and greatest endings ever, 12 alternative endings!!!! In old 16bits times
Still my all time favorite game next to Xenogears and FFVII. One of the only ones I can still play today get that same 'feeling' I got when I first played it.
Hey everybody! I have released my new album 'Progenitor' which is electronic music inspired by great games such as Chrono Trigger. You can check it out and download it for free on my youtube channel if you're interested!
Played this in Japanese when it came out, then times and times again on the US cart. Both games cost me quite a lot to import back in the days, but that was money well spent. ^^
Should I get this version, or the DS version? I'm asking because I prefer the bigger screen, and I get bored with handheld games quickly, regardless that my favorite game of all time is handheld. If you want to know how I get bored of Handheld games quickly, I still haven't beat Dragon Quest 9.
@Amaterixen i think you should get this version on the wii virtual console even though the ds version you can take it anywhere you want and play where and when ever you want but sence you perfer playing the game on the bigger screen and you get bored of handeld games quickly then i think your best bet is downloding the snes version on the wii virtual console not to mention its only 800 wii points compare to the ds version which is 20 bucks so download this version on the wii VC i recommended
@Amaterixen oh and not mention that the sound qulity of snes version of chrono trigger is more crisp and louder then the ds version and ever more so if you have a surround system
I love this game and bought it for VC the first day I could. If I may rant a bit, the whole friend thing on Wii is needlessly cumbersome. If I want to add and gift CT to someone, they need my 16 digit friend code, I need theirs, and we need to wait about half an hour for Nintendo's servers to register us both. . Now compare this with Steam. I just need their email address, and they don't need to be a steam user at first. I love nintendo, but as I said, needlessly cumbersome.
@mshartz5 Ya I remember playing this game when I was really little and loving it so much. I thought the graphics were great and for the games of the time they were. Games today lack story telling that games like Chrono Trigger had back then if it dosent have explosions guns and ridiculously bloody multiplayer its not a good game apparently.
@MrInsanity25 That statement in and of itself makes me sad. That people are so thick skulled that they cant explore the fact the games other than shooters can be great (and in my mind much more fun)
@cheesemuffin94 Well I was using sarcasm soo don't get mad at me. I'm just as pizzed off as yuo about this thing. Although I will say I like CoD but I sold 'emfor other games 2 weeks ago, ToV and ToS.
@cheesemuffin94 I mean my favorite games consist of a platformer where you eat shrooms and turtles have a vendetta against you, a 10 year old boy can kill monsters and save the world, and one where a 10 year old boy can catch animals and make 'em fight for money.
@cheesemuffin94 You and MrInsanity25 are right. It's sad that so many good games games have been made this past generation like The World Ends With You and Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 and nobody pays attention. So many people are missing out on some great masterpieces. Oh yeah, I'm playing this game on Wii VC, it's fucking amazing. Really is a masterpiece among masterpieces.
@cheesemuffin94 I would probably try it, I'm borrowing the DS version of this game from my friend simply because I thought it looked good and have never played it before. I do the opposite of what the ignorant say =D.
@Xads308 It creeped me out. Especially that "Lavos Wins" ending. I mean some Game Over screens are creepy but the one with Lavos destroying everything, holy shit..... Hearing him roar when that text fades in sent chills down my spine.
Oh man. Back when games were about quality gameplay, storytelling and enthralling experiences that are immerse you in a fantastical world of wonder. I don't care if the game is comprised of 2-D sprites, it was done so well that I honestly felt like I was a part of the Chrono Trigger universe.
Much more than can be said for many games today, easy-moded to appeal to a larger audience at the sacrifice of quality and challenge, parading behind "graphics" and cheap thrills.
As a kid, going from super mario world and cheap looney tunes titles straight to this was downright mindblowing especially soundwise and what got me into video game music.
Also listen to the premonition with headphones on. Trust me.
I can easily say this always was and always will be my favorite video game of all time... I started playing it when I was like 5, have been playing for over a decade, and there are still a couple endings that are new! Also I found a speed tab that isn't mentioned in the players manual =)
@BahumutRider I agree, the music from this was awesome, better than many movies
the ds version has more acurrate translation than the snes and ps1 version. combine that with the less cluttered interface, and WALAH, better experience.
@Notyu1459 Hey, this type of game was amazing for our time, your Dip Shit might have better translation but Does not have that nostalgia feeling from playing it on its original hardware
@Notyu1459 PLEASE. Frog lost his knightly accent, the dialog got all overdramatic and it seemed for the most part that characters lost their personalities in the new translation!
@Notyu1459 Yes, but Japanese is an entirely different language. The thing is sometimes the words can be directly translated, but the intent is lost. My Japanese teacher often has trouble translating certain sentences for us because "we wouldn't understand the intent behind it", and I think this is something the new translators should've kept in mind.
The original Ted Woosley translation just had more life to it thanks to localizing the dialog.
Best RPG of all time, played it all the time when I was a kid.. Rented it all the time. Always wanted to own it but could never find it in stores. Was so happy when it came out on DS, beat it all over again :) Its a game I always go back to after not playing it for a little while...
This RPG was the best one I ever played, ties with Final Fantasy VI as the best game ever, no doubt.
I rememebr watching my family play this and then I got this for Christmas just last year and beat it three times (has yet to still get all endings and fully finish 100%)
But this game was overall amazing: Beauitful story, amazing music, great characters and many other elements. This is definitely my favorite RPG of all time! <3
I know what you mean dude this brings back memories, I remember playing this game as a 4 year old kid begging my parents to come read the dialogue from the game for me haha. Games like this are good for you it got me into reading at an early age.
I started playing this game for the first time just two days ago. One of the best games I've played. If I had played this as a child it would probably be up there with Ocarina of time and some of the Finalf Fantasy Games.
U know a game is friggin epic when they have damn Orchestras doing all ur songs!! u guys should look up this opening intro done by an orchestra!! Epic on a grand scale trust me!!
The one thing the DS version did that was flat out WRONG was removing the old-school intro. Why? Chrono Cross had both an FMV and an SNES-style opening demo. Did they just get lazy in converting the instruments and decide to omit it entirely? Or is it part of an easter egg where you disable movies? I don't know. Either way, I'll always feel nostalgic seeing this opening, so it's exclusion was sorely missed on the DS (which was otherwise spot-on).
@quittaboi they removed the original opening in the PSX version, so it wasnt the idea of the DS porters. but yea, there should be an option to enable the original title movie. I like how they made short movies for the game, but still, there needs to be a way to play it in its original glory.
and yes, best RPG ever created. it was a combination of epic teams that created this game, Square was stupid to break them up... so now we have the mediocre game Chrono Cross as a "sequel" :(
Played the DS version not too long ago. It was my first time playing CT. And it was pretty awesome. It's certainly in my top 5 RPGs of all time. And because it is just so generally enthralling, it might even be one of my top ten all time games.
I remember sitting there for a half hour or so, watching this intro over and over again, and then playing this game for hours on end. I must have played this game through to the end 5 times or so, watching every ending. It has been a long time since a game has made me as obsessive as this one has, and the with current trend for video games from once-great-but-now-digging-their-own-grave companies like Square Enix, it looks like I'll be waiting quite a while longer.
I bought it on DS the game is insane why did they not bring it out in Europe idiots I swear. Ohh well I think I need to buy the SNES version 1 day to see what it's like on the big screen cause apparently the PSOne version fails
@IamBrycey If you really want to play this game download the snes emulator and chrono trigger roms. it's really easy to do and if you need help just look it up on youtube

Should I get this version, or the DS version? I'm asking because I prefer the bigger screen, and I get bored with handheld games quickly, regardless that my favorite game of all time is handheld. If you want to know how I get bored of Handheld games quickly, I still haven't beat Dragon Quest 9.
Amaterixen 8 months ago
@Amaterixen i think you should get this version on the wii virtual console even though the ds version you can take it anywhere you want and play where and when ever you want but sence you perfer playing the game on the bigger screen and you get bored of handeld games quickly then i think your best bet is downloding the snes version on the wii virtual console not to mention its only 800 wii points compare to the ds version which is 20 bucks so download this version on the wii VC i recommended
heerogunkenobi 8 months ago
@heerogunkenobi Thanks dude, now I just need to get Wii Points. :D

@Amaterixen no problum ^_^

@mshartz5 Soorry until I play the game and am proven so I'm still going with Zelda WW and Zelda LttP
MrInsanity25 7 months ago
@mshartz5 Ya I remember playing this game when I was really little and loving it so much. I thought the graphics were great and for the games of the time they were. Games today lack story telling that games like Chrono Trigger had back then if it dosent have explosions guns and ridiculously bloody multiplayer its not a good game apparently.
cheesemuffin94 7 months ago
@cheesemuffin94 Well haven't you heard, it's not hardcore because it's not an FPS!!!
MrInsanity25 7 months ago
@MrInsanity25 That statement in and of itself makes me sad. That people are so thick skulled that they cant explore the fact the games other than shooters can be great (and in my mind much more fun)
cheesemuffin94 7 months ago
@cheesemuffin94 Well I was using sarcasm soo don't get mad at me. I'm just as pizzed off as yuo about this thing. Although I will say I like CoD but I sold 'emfor other games 2 weeks ago, ToV and ToS.
MrInsanity25 7 months ago
@cheesemuffin94 I mean my favorite games consist of a platformer where you eat shrooms and turtles have a vendetta against you, a 10 year old boy can kill monsters and save the world, and one where a 10 year old boy can catch animals and make 'em fight for money.
Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon FTW.^^
MrInsanity25 7 months ago
@cheesemuffin94 You and MrInsanity25 are right. It's sad that so many good games games have been made this past generation like The World Ends With You and Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 and nobody pays attention. So many people are missing out on some great masterpieces. Oh yeah, I'm playing this game on Wii VC, it's fucking amazing. Really is a masterpiece among masterpieces.
UltimateDarknezz999 7 months ago
@cheesemuffin94 I would probably try it, I'm borrowing the DS version of this game from my friend simply because I thought it looked good and have never played it before. I do the opposite of what the ignorant say =D.

did lavos core scare the crap out of anybody else?
Xads308 10 months ago 32
@Xads308 It creeped me out. Especially that "Lavos Wins" ending. I mean some Game Over screens are creepy but the one with Lavos destroying everything, holy shit..... Hearing him roar when that text fades in sent chills down my spine.
BUT....THE FUTURE REFUSED TO CHANGE...

@Xads308 yes me and 2 other people (and like 100's more 'cause not evryone can see your comment. XP)
Mdude123456789 9 months ago

Trust me.
BahumutRider 10 months ago
I can easily say this always was and always will be my favorite video game of all time... I started playing it when I was like 5, have been playing for over a decade, and there are still a couple endings that are new! Also I found a speed tab that isn't mentioned in the players manual =)
@BahumutRider I agree, the music from this was awesome, better than many movies

the ds version has more acurrate translation than the snes and ps1 version. combine that with the less cluttered interface, and WALAH, better experience.
Notyu1459 1 year ago
@Notyu1459 Hey, this type of game was amazing for our time, your Dip Shit might have better translation but Does not have that nostalgia feeling from playing it on its original hardware
SNESosT 11 months ago
@SNESosT The snes version is great. I just feel that despite being on the newer hardware you dissed, it feels better. I have a snes; I know.
Notyu1459 10 months ago
@Notyu1459 PLEASE. Frog lost his knightly accent, the dialog got all overdramatic and it seemed for the most part that characters lost their personalities in the new translation!
taiyoutekken 11 months ago
@taiyoutekken But that's how they were in the Japanese version. The end result is not necessarily better.
Notyu1459 10 months ago

I rememebr watching my family play this and then I got this for Christmas just last year and beat it three times (has yet to still get all endings and fully finish 100%)
But this game was overall amazing: Beauitful story, amazing music, great characters and many other elements. This is definitely my favorite RPG of all time! <3

Morbidcrab 1 year ago
The one thing the DS version did that was flat out WRONG was removing the old-school intro. Why? Chrono Cross had both an FMV and an SNES-style opening demo. Did they just get lazy in converting the instruments and decide to omit it entirely? Or is it part of an easter egg where you disable movies? I don't know. Either way, I'll always feel nostalgic seeing this opening, so it's exclusion was sorely missed on the DS (which was otherwise spot-on).
quittaboi 1 year ago

Skidonti 1 year ago
I remember sitting there for a half hour or so, watching this intro over and over again, and then playing this game for hours on end. I must have played this game through to the end 5 times or so, watching every ending. It has been a long time since a game has made me as obsessive as this one has, and the with current trend for video games from once-great-but-now-digging-their-own-grave companies like Square Enix, it looks like I'll be waiting quite a while longer.
immortalfrieza 1 year ago
I bought it on DS the game is insane why did they not bring it out in Europe idiots I swear. Ohh well I think I need to buy the SNES version 1 day to see what it's like on the big screen cause apparently the PSOne version fails
