I own kershaws, SOG's and a few gerbers, but I have never went near spyderco's I just don't find the way they look very attractive, I will probably have to own one on order to appreciate it, but I don't have the desire to buy one, so I don't think I will ever appreciate one...
The new dragonfly has an adjustable pivot, jemping, a wire clip, and bidirectional texturing on the handle. Mine should be coming in the mail some time next week. SO excited! :D
Nutn, you talk about the type of steels all the time. Is there an online resource that shows the pros and cons of the steel or some other resource you can point the way to?
i have a bunch of liner locks and frame locks but when i saw your vids on different knives i really wanted a lock back i had em as a kid. so i got a gator 2 big but what the hell haha
@ykparty Its definatly worth a try. I dont see why it would work on other spydercos and not on this one. And if it doesnt work guess what, you can just take off the zip tie.
Just bought my first Spyderco ever today and it just happened to be the Dragonfly. I'm impressed right off the bat. Now I see what all the spydie guys were raving about. I was lucky enough to find one at a salvage place for $10. Perfect condition. A solid little knife that cuts like the dickens. Mine has the serrated blade, but doesn't have a depression in the back-lock. I might just have been turned to the Spydie side.
I just picked up a Dragonfly in the Foliage green G-10 handle, and they "fixed" every thing on this knife to make it better. Jimping on ramp and choil, tight clip that can be left or right and hex bolts so it can be taken apart. yeah, it has liner licks which i know you don't need on a knife this small, but the rest plus the G-10 scales make up for it. It is a sweet little knife, razor sharp out of the box.
@oOBunnyackOo I am a tradesman and use pocket knives everyday at work. I have owned two of these knives and I really put them though the ringer and abuse them. My old serrated spyderco was the best pocket knife I ever had. I swear it never got dull. Unfortunatly I lost it. To sharpen a serrated blade you can use the corner of a sharpening stone.
i have other knives that i TRY to carry as MUCH as i possiblly can.. but living in an urban area, sometimes going certain places with my BM 710 or paramilitary.. might not be possible.. but this knife at this size is gana go right on my keys and ima have it on me 24/7 its small/ lightwieght/ but yet great quality ;) just ordered 1 a few hours ago...
This still is one of your best reviews! And what an awesome little knife that is! I bought it after I saw your video and carry it every single day wherever I go.
what is wrong with SS liners?? that thing will literaly disapear into your pocket. (never the less, this one is on my list) I think liners give a knife some weight. If it doesn't go over 3 ounces then they are fine (In my opinion) another good video Nutnfancy! keep 'em coming!
@NoSpin13 nothing wrong with ss liners, just personal preference. i personally like the ss liners too but nutn is very tactical and likes things to be as light as possible
Nice vid as usual. I wanted to point out though that from my experience the rust resistance on my AUS8 Dragonfly has been quite good. Before I had any of the H1 series Spydercos this was my vacation/beach/saltwater knife and I've never had more than a rust spot appear, which was easily removed, after swimming in saltwater with this in my pocket.
I just got the VG10/G10 Dragonfly this week and it is awesome! It's now my in-pocket EDC.
Hey bud, yes it is, but I've noticed that most of the newer Spydercos I've purchased - Salt 1, Delica4, Ladybug H1, Dragonfly G10 and possibly even my Jester, all have a sharper edge on the thumbhole than my older Delica1, Aus8 Dragonfly and Ladybug. I actually prefer the sharper edge...better purchase as you would say!
i would really love to see this knife in a liner lock version. i am not a huge fam of back locks but this knife seems to be pretty good. do the more expensive knives have torque construction?
Yeah on that pocket clip being molded I have had an Emerson Mini Commander clip bend on me after getting caught on a shoe box and my Spyderco D2 Para Military and I was pretty mad both times and I would be pretty mad if I were to break the clip on a Dragonfly. And Nutnfancy you should try both of those knives listed above especialy the Para Military if you like the Military then you will really love the Para Military.
my kershaw is great for left handed, the finger release is handy, and after carrying bucks and knives for a long time, the kershaw has definately become my favorite. check it out if you get the chance, ive put it through hell and it has worked flawlessly.
Could this knife be used as a "Stuff 'n Grab"? Like stuff it in your pocket and grab it when you need it? It seems small enough, and some people like to totally conceal the weapon on their person.
I carry a 6" titanium handled ti-lite as a defensive blade, on its pocket clip. And have a white FRN dragonfly sitting in my pocket. I almost never use the ti-lite because its so large and threatening, but the dragonfly works great for me.
Bigger, not VG-10, as the dragonfly is now. Just unnecessarily big for most EDC tasks. I own both knives and prefer the dragonfly for EDC. They're also very close in price.
you cant really compare knives of two different sizes as they are typically for different POUs thus they have different "ingredients" and comparing an apple to an orange would be a commendable analogy in that case
now i didn't buy this knife but spyderco sells it for $60-$70 i'm not sure which it is closer to. why do they sell it at so much more than the middle-man, who by rules of logic, should sell for more than the actual company?
I bought mine for $103 Canadian with a life-time warrenty and free sharpening. I was a little upset, but glad I bought it. I put it on my car and house key ring so I always have it on my person. I forget it's there. :) I'm happy I bought it though, it has come in handy.
don't worry man, i got ripped off too because i live in south africa. i have 10 spydercos in all shapes and sizes and the dragonfly has become one of the knives i carry and use the most for small everyday tasks.
The calypso jr FRN is VG-10, jimping, 2 7/8" blade, and weighs 1.9oz.!!
The calypso jr. comes in a variety of blades, handles, colors, and metals. But, the plain jane version is gotten for only $50, pricier EDC but solves all of the issues you mentiuon above. I've owned a calypso jr. for years and it rocks! Cheers.
thanx... the Kershaw Grand County model 3100 is just as small as the chive... or maybe smaller... chive blade length- 1 15/16" and Grandcounty 1 7/8'.. both listed as 4.9cm.. but Grand county closed length is shorter... 6.8cm as compared to chive 7.3cm...the GC is lighter too... Thanx neways.. i did not know about Benchmite... but knew all the others.. i don't think Coldsteel makes micro knives...

ha, is say that too on occasion, but i understand where you're coming from. Certain things that people say annoy the living hell out of me for absolutely no reason. Just pet peevs...
Good review. For a southpaw like myself, the molded clip is right handed which limits it. Otherwise, I agree. I prefer the Spyderco hole to the Byrd comet opening. I own a G-10 Robin which is roughly the same size, though heavier, but cheaper than the FRN Dragonfly. I like the blade shape and grind better on the Dragonfly (leaf shape & flat grind vs. drop point & hollow grind for the Robin) than the Robin.
Hell yea brother, I only buy knives that come able to be left hand carried, bought my Benchmade Pika and switched the clip around cant be any happier.
I actually like the integrated clip. It looks more like a pen in your pocket and would raise less eyebrows in a more knife conscious area. Like you mentioned, it does ride a little higher than I'd like.
Looks like my old Endura just a mini version. I want something smaller as a edc/utility knife and the Dragonfly looks perfect. Thanks for the nice review.
dude nice i just got that knife 4 free my freinds dad knows a guy at the head of security at disney and he showed me the confiscated knife and i picked this
I wish they had put a removable clip on it and jimping on the thumb ramp. Oh well, maybe in next years model. But hey it's a low cost and nice blade, ya can't beat that. Nice review 5 stars, I'll have to add this one to the list.
i know that Spyderco makes great knives, but looks and style is important to me, and im not a fan of the style and look of most spyderco knives. But i think this one looks slightly better, and im getting it.
the thing with Spyderco knives is that they are "designed in the dark." at first glance, the shape might seem odd and a bit unattractive, but put one in your hand and start cutting, and suddenly the lights go on. they perform so well, at such a great price, that you might soon find yourself thinking that other blades aren't as attractive as the Spydies. :)
Cutting bales of hay? What? I've worked on a farm for years and have NEVER had to CUT through bales of hay. Do you mean bailing twine?

Hmmm.
-Bladeplay.
-Can't take it apart or even adjust the pivot.
-Zytel handles..and zytel fixed clip..
In my opinion all these things are unacceptable for a 5 dollar knife, let alone a 30 dollar one.
Don't agree with the score at all, but good informative review though.
captainkid1 3 years ago
Its a feather weight, little knife. At the moment its my EDC until my Benchmade mini-Grip comes on friday.
-Mine has no bladeplay after EDCing it for ~6 monthes
-I also think the riveting sucks
-the zytel is fine but the clip isn't tight enough
-NEEDS JIMPING
I was lucky I got mine clearence from a Sports Authority for $20 so for me it was worth it.

whAT color?
Zootoxin1911 3 years ago
Black FRN, it's been holding up fairly nicely, but is by no means heavy duty. What would you expect?
depolarization 3 years ago
Ya i got the white frn. really nice. very small!
Zootoxin1911 3 years ago
Robin has jimping and is about $10 cheaper. The good news is that Sal Glesser has confirmed we are getting a G-10 dragonfly with a reversible clip.

Byrd knives are great!
Zootoxin1911 3 years ago

I just ordered this for $30 plus shipping, and let me admit, the box really sold it for me.

I wish they had put a removable clip on it and jimping on the thumb ramp. Oh well, maybe in next years model. But hey it's a low cost and nice blade, ya can't beat that. Nice review 5 stars, I'll have to add this one to the list.

I'm starting to think the Boye notch is more for quickly finding the lockback release than anything.

I was looking at that blade when I saw my KA BAR, I didn't really like it. But good review nonetheless.

i know that Spyderco makes great knives, but looks and style is important to me, and im not a fan of the style and look of most spyderco knives. But i think this one looks slightly better, and im getting it.
Great review aswell, 5 stars
LOLimajeepithink 3 years ago
the thing with Spyderco knives is that they are "designed in the dark." at first glance, the shape might seem odd and a bit unattractive, but put one in your hand and start cutting, and suddenly the lights go on. they perform so well, at such a great price, that you might soon find yourself thinking that other blades aren't as attractive as the Spydies. :)
great review, as usual.
