I've always loved the rotary engine! In the late 70's I had one that was ported with a high-rise manifold, 550 holly, header exhaust and it was the first rotary with nitrous oxide, thanks to Marvin Miller. It was driving a two cycle engine.

It's a cool car, and that is easily one of the best sounding engines ever (I actually got to hear it in person back in 92 in its IMSA counterpart, the RX7-92P at Road America), but the 787 really wasn't all that badass. It was considerably slower than the rest of the Group C field. The IMSA cars had a really hard time keeping up with the NPTI-91's, Eagle MK3's and even the N/A XJR-14.

Like I said, cool car, but no giant killer. In any sprint race and it was lucky to stay on the lead lap..

it almost amazes me that the tranny uses an H shifting pattern... I wonder why it's not an electronic paddle shift or even a sequential gearbox ? Seems odd given how amazingly bad ass the 787 is.

The Zonda R is a masterpiece of engineering but I reckon in a real race, (because it's not designed to go racing) it would lack consistency. Plus, well just listen to that 4 rotor!

This thing would probably have a lot more power and be a lot faster without concerns for racing rule / reliability. And that's exactly the strengths/beauty of Zonda R. Sure it can do a flying lap at the ring, I doubt it'll last half of the race. just enjoy the beautiful sounds and forget about pointless comparison... eh?

I think Sr... you are comparing two cars that were built 20 years apart from each other, but a counterpoint here: there is a 240kg difference, that ought to make a difference, one more thing 700bhp is the official limited horsepower, the real figure in unrestricted version is about 900bhp, and frankly I very much doubt the Zonda R would be able to run 24 hours at an average speed of 210kmh...
