I have been listening to several recordings of Borodin because we will be performing this next spring. This work is thumping and ponderous in the earlier parts and feels too fast in the middle. The brass are good but not great (did I hear a bad note in the last section?!) The legatos are nice and the dynamics seem good (as best as can be judged for this recording), but the 'touch' seems to be missing. I bet this is a young orchestra.
I remember playing this in my 1st year of uni. The 1st bassoon parts kicked my ass. But if we sounded even half as good as this, then it certainly paid off !!!
yes, I wasn't at the performance so I don't really know who's fault it is I guess. It was only too loud at a few parts, where I couldn't hear any chords, but only the low timpani note and it overwhelmed the orchestra for a moment. But it could be a mic problem, your right.
were doing this for our youth orchestra, i am one of 4 viola's, and by the sound of things at rehersal, idk if we are going to be able to pull it together, can u offer any advice?
I play trombone in a local symphony and we just performed this piece. Sheer brilliance is all that I have to say about it. And it has a pretty sweet trombone part.

shutup timpani! way too loud.

Don't think a conductor of his calibre would let something like "way too loud" go by without comment.
Another possibility, is that the location of the mic is concentrating a greater amount of the tymp.
I have experienced that with recordings of my own playing.
