I still say Michael Strank got the worst of it. At 25, he was called "old man," never got off the island, and when Ira Hayes met his mother, he completely broke down, and said, "Your son was the greatest man I ever met."
@metelclaw wish I knew some of the family personally. This song has haunted me since I heard it first in 1968 as a boy. I have some Indian herritage but not enough to have people give prejudice against. I am proud of this herritage just the same and also the peoplewho have helped to make us free. God bless you so sorry for the tragedy
I remember a movie called, 'The Outsider', with Tony Curtis as Ira Hayes. I wished it were available on DVD or someone would post it here. Great portrail of Ira.
The memories of the terrible battles he fought and all his buddies who died he felt he didnt deserve all the praise and honor he said it was for those who died, He was a real American hero and I hope the generations coming up today will somehow learn and remember who he was and what he and all the other Marines did in WWII. SACRIFICE is the only word that comes to my mind!
I have known and loved the sad story of Ira. It is so sad because of the short life and non acceptance by many. Indians have suffered enormous persecution and as a group greatly forgive what has been done to them. Ira didn't believe he was a hero but he was and my great dream is to one day go to Iwo Jima and climb that same hill as Ira- only wish I could have met him I believe we could have been great friends
Many Veterans fall into this desperate lifestyle when they return with memories of fallen comrades and blood war to a society who misunderstands and fails to embrace them. bt
A beautiful "skin" of the indian and he sacrificed his life for all colors here!!! He should be one on top of the list as a Hero and a Native American at that!!! and have full recognition for his Pima tribe!
Are you kidding me?! Ira is without a doubt deserving of Arlington! He was a hero! As President Harry Truman said to Ira," You are a true American hero, for you are a true American."
It makes you almost hide your face in shame at the way some of our veterans have been treated. They fought for us and many of them died, but America forgets them like last years birds nest. Despicable!!
@Stan1208 - It sure does. Now - Homeland Security is going to PROFILE our returning military for suspission of terrorism. Now that is just MESSED UP messed up.
Semper Fi Ira Hayes, May God/Creator Bless you. We also honored you with "Thank a Veteran Military re-mix" A little something for all Veterans and their families, past, future, and present with a hip-hop twist.
L/Cpl Hodgson-Garvais, Gulf Co 2/5 1st Marine Division 1986-1990.
Thanks for this post. Many people have forgotten about IRA HAYES. Many may not of even known of whom he was.
If you don't know who he was find out about this brave man who remembered his country but his country forgot him. Never let them forget some give all its not always left on the battelfield. Don't forget them.
Read the book, and I saw the movie. James Brady was inspring to write the book because he was touched by the story. He did an excellent job telling their stories, and his father's. RIP Ira, and the men who served and are serving, thank you. Today is Veterans Day.
Before I saw the movie the other day, I had never really heard of Ira...I've seen the famous image my whole life, and even the image with the Indian figure reaching for the flag not knowing what that was about...I never knew their story until now. He was obviously a very GOOD man! Such a sad story.
Ira Hayes was a Marine's Marine. A Hero in every sense of the word. We need more Ira Hays in our Corp. ~ Randy C Ford Bravo Company 1st Tank Bn USMC Al Anbar, Iraq.
Hi, I just watched & read..What you say has truth; but, for people like me~'Wind Talkers' is a very important movie, as I did not like to study history...I then learned from that movie and also, gained even deeper respect for our 1st Americans~~how could the 1st Americans fight the wars~~because, they LOVE this land.
Respectfully p.s. I've just watched 1 of 5 DVD's of the remake of 500 Nations~~the Kevin Costner version~~I've been near the Gila Reservation~~strong energy (chi) or vortex, WOW!
You did a great job of making a memorial to Ira Hays.

Sure wish contempory country music could
convey more sentiments of this quality.
Sure do miss the old style. All too much of todays country is trying to be a rock show.
Not that I'm not into the evolution of music,
but it all seems to be the same. We need another "one in a million" artist.
