I also recall this on MTV and this song was played on Miami Vice once, then again I heard it on Romy and Michelle's High School reunion when Janeane Garofalo and the cowboy were in high school smoking their cigarettes and she never had time. Something about this song rang a bell... I finally figured it out. The chords, the progression, bassline and even the bridge match Blood on the Scarecrow by John Mellencamp. Only the tempo and the lyrics differ. Strange that would both have "Blood" in the title.
