Is possible that you people these days can make a comment without your dirty mouth taking over? This was my time in the 60's in the UK we had a good time but we had some respect. It's a lot of you don't these days. But hey ho.
@TH3ST1G117 Ray Davies used to read Orwell, so coincidence is out. I'm inclined to believe that he loved the idea of writing a song with this title even more for its referential value.
Many artists seemed to live for fame. The more time passes by, the more my feeling is that the Kinks lived for posterity. To that respect, their incorporation of two members of the late group Argent was one of the best things that could happen ti both sides.
@3Roymunson I hope we can regain that innocence. This song makes me want to. I know so many people who remember their baggage like they miss it. Like winos sniffing a cork. If this song touches you like it does me, it gives me hope that we can be reborn in some way and be like children again.
jkramaster, meanwhile I got 50 thumbs up for my opinion, which isnt bad at all. Youre right they were loud (think of Lola) but on the other hand they were so thrilling to me in their choice of subject that I didnt care much about the volume which to me seemed rather subdued compared to todays standard. I just loved the Kinks for another reason: their lyrics conveyed a message contrary to the Beatles who were just melodycrazy, except John with his wonderful "Imagine" still is modern today.
I first heard this song when my sister's boyfriend was strumming it on my guitar...later that night I taught myself how to play it and have been in love with it ever since. Much less to say it rocks my socks.

Agreed. Yes, there can be the odd band that can construct complex lyrics and deal with mature themes (Muse, for instance), but The Kinks just have that magical quality, and combine their unique style to such a great effect
@luneda2 beautiful aren't they - rock ballads, rock operas, symphonies, jams and chart hits, everything you need for a fulfilling, smoky music session.
@luneda2 I got 29 thumbs up for my view governor, so I cant be that wrong after all. But still it is only one opinion and you are right there is good music around today.
@luneda2 you really got me was louder, rawer and the lyrics were defintely not genius by any standard. it's still a prime example of a song that kicks your fucking ass. i dont think the volume nor the complexity of the lyrics have something to do with the poor state of today's pop music
@luneda2 - There's alot of good music being made today, it's just not on the radio, it's not being promoted by a pretty much dead and destroyed major music industry...Don't confuse what's out there commercially for what's really going on in the music world...There was a lot of crap on the airwaves in the 60's too, people tend to forget!
Well, at the end of the day, roughly half the population is female, the other half male. Now while women may be strange and may not make very interesting people, they do make good sex, do you not agree?
There is no one else today who would come close to being able to write a song like this. It's "naive art." It's so heartfelt and brilliant that it makes you smile and hurt at the same time.
What a great sentiment. You hit the nail right on the head. Makes you smile and hurt at the same time, do you mind if I steal that quote? It's too good to pass up!
AFTER 40 years since its release this song and album is now considered a masterpiece...didnt sell many copies in 1968...I was one of the few that bought it...my God what a great song...this is beyond rock n roll...its in a league all its own...the kinks have always gotten raw deal....yet, they kept on a going and wrote over 500 songs in their career and still going strong...yeah baby!!!
Maybe the Floyd back catalog is included because of the cover of Atom Heart Mother has a "Cow", a farm animal. Also, the cover of "Animals" has a Pig, another flying farm animal.
