@BethuneGal Polyester is made from plastic - not natural. Many don't biodegrade. So, what happens when you throw that polyester out? It goes to the local landfill, then breaks down into smaller pieces. The smaller plastic pieces then enter the food web, and now we are all eating chemicals. The chemicals are then ingested by a baby and it gets cancer. Now, he just did a inhumane act, unintentionally of course, by buying that polyester. Damn. Should have gone with the down.

@keeponblinking then we're just beating around the bush here. the animal lovers will go for the polyester-filled coats. the rest will opt for down-filled. i understand polyester is synthetic. but if we're on that topic, we have so much that we will have to get rid off-- so much clothing these days are made of polyester. my main point is we dont have to torture and inflict pain upon animals just so we can stay warm. humans are smart, there are so many other more human options. come on now!

I have lived in a farm for eighteen years. Live plucking is not a painful process, and I can even tell you for a fact that geese love it. It is hard to explain, but they really enjoy it. Geese are very friendly animals, and very clever as well. To them, plucking is just a game. And the quality of their feathers is just unbelievable. Keep on buying products made of geese feathers, they also like it a lot!

Boycott Down products - don't eat foie gras as they shred geese' throats by force feeding them often injecting food into their lungs. @Alagathevictor If it's so cold where you are, why not use stuff like Thinsulate, Thermolite, Polargaurd and Primaloft, that type of thing? Explorers in the arctic are not relying primarily on bird feathers to keep them warm.

@OonaCanute, I do have Thinsulate in my gloves and North Bend trousers. Bird feathers, which are also used in pillows and duvets, just seem like better quality in addition to synthetic materials, and is probably more comfortable in a jacket, Like a real fur ruff is preferable to a synthetic one.

But it's not all right to take the feathers while the bird is alive, I only think they do it in certain areas though, and that has to be stopped. If they didn't, there wouldn't be a problem

This is because the largest producers--China, Poland, and Hungary--all utilize live-plucking...and that's where we get most of our feathers. (China alone is responsible for 80% of the feathers and down sold.) And so unfortunately it isn't as rare as we'd like to assume.

In a TV program, Operation X, it was revealed that minks on danish mink farms lived under awful conditions, werent given straw, they were left with wounds from getting bit by other minks, and dead ones were left in the cages together with live ones. After that revealing, Copenhagen fur tried to sell their coats at an 80 % discount, because sales were badly hurt.

@Alagathevictor I believe that even if you bought a jacket made in the USA, it could still contain down from china, right? Similar situation is with cosmetics. When a bottle of shampoo has a label "no animal testing", all it could mean is that the final product wasn't tested but the separate ingredients could very well have been tested. Now that know truth about down, I'm going to avoid down products all together.
