He was brilliant...and not ONE Academy Award; such a travesty! Just read a much overdue biography of him; lots of interesting anecdotes and things I never knew, such as the aforementioned loss of sight in his right eye.
That was fun to watch. Most the bloopers I've seen have been from the last 20 years of so. It's fun watching the screw ups of an old time classic actor.
I am delighted you pointed that out! Most Rains fans don't know that before emigrating to America he was an acting teacher over in Jolly Ol' England! Thanks for your comment !!!
@JubalCalif You're welcome! He taught at RADA, if I recall. Fascinating man - nearly blind in one eye from being gassed in WWI... according to his daughter, when he wasn't "on" (working or in public mode), he had an almost impenetrable Cockney accent... Just so many interesting facts! He should be better remembered!
Jinkies! I did not know he was nearly blind in one eye. Didn't know he'd fought in WWI...though I knew fellow Brit actor Herbert Marshall lost a leg in that same war & hid it from his movie fans QUITE well! I hope to someday read the book his daughter co-wrote about him. How fascinating that off screen had a strong Cockney accent! THANKS so very much for sharing such fascinating trivia! I TOTALLY agree that he should be better remembered! And Bette Davis' fave co-star! :-)
Rains was great in Lawrence when he says probably I should have stayed in Tumbrige Wells or in Deception when he literally spits out his hatred word by word Yes spits) for Henreid nobody could have (said , spat) those words half as well. or in Notorious when he says mother I'm married to an american agent
@doctornoooo His best line (and dirtiest) in "Deception" was: "Good evening, my dear. Why, you look positively majestic-- I think I'd better remain seated."
You got that right! One of cinema's all time great voices! Such a charismatic actor...always suave, sophisticated & debonair! THANKS for your insightful comment !!! :-)
thank you so much for posting these! They are great :) Claude Raines is such a great actor...too bad so many people now don't have any idea who he is :(
Where did you get that last blooper, the one in Deception?I have seen the other ones before but not that one.I almost fell out of my chair laughing when I heard Bette off screen say,"no,hot as hell."Priceless.
