Could you comment on paint quality please. I am guessing that paint found at Home Depot, Lowe's, etc, is not a good quality paint. Would you say Benjamin Moore is? Give us some recommendations on other brands.
"I don't know a painter alive that uses the w pattern" thats a funny line yet so true, your video is one of the best that Ive seen and shows me the same procedures we use here in Ottawa Canada, "keep the wet side out"
@mypinkkconverse what i would do is re paint it using the same color but mix some brown or black into it and test it and keep mixing and testing till you get the desired look
this video is to goofy,,,,NOT PRO @ ALL,,,,,,,,,,,,this advice is from a an old caveman painter,,,,,,,,,OLD SCHOOL,,,,,,,,,,,,WE USE MUCH BETTER WAYS OF ACHIEVING A " FAST.PERFECT JOB "
i got a question... if you would be painting the door trims and moldings, would you do the exact step with the blue tape in the corners of the wall that you demonstrated towards the end of the video?
im currently doing my nvq level one in painting and decorating and they teach us not to tape, but to cut in corners, skirting boards etc.. im the best at cutting in on the course and have a steady hand but its still hard and sometimes eye boggling to do, thanks 4 scoring the wall line trick it will help me a lot in the future... YOUR TOP PAINTER!
@Mr93z32 If you're painting flat you usually don't have to prime, I always paint two coats, so unless you're doing a bright red or orange you probably won't need to prime. Ask the paint retailer if that specific color needs a primer.
Hey so how come my paint doesn't go on as smooth as yours? I'm using a 1/2" nap roller cover by purdy. However when i applied paint on it didn't go on fully. Its only a pint for color sample, i didn't know whether to use a brush or roller, i figured roller would go on easier, but i ran out of paint for a second coat, even though i was supposed to have enough for a second coat, I painted an 4x4 ft area, however when i cleaned my roller sooo much paint came off, it filled half a pint can. so idk
@champ3660 if you're only painting a 4'x4' area a whizzee roller would be the best tool to use. Usually if the paint isn't going on smoothly you don't have enough paint on the roller. It sounds like, by the time your roller had enough paint you were out of paint.
Cutting-in is the part I love most. I only mask off baseboard (skirting board in the UK) if they aren't going to be painted later, and I cover them with strips of old newspaper as I mask up. I carry a damp cloth to wipe drips and spills as they happen and I use new brushes for dusting only, til they have worn in and all lose bristles have gone from them. Preparation is paramount because poor prep leads to a poor finish. Check paint batch codes if buying several cans, and buy quality paint.
Another great vid bro! Take it from someone who has been doing this for over 30 years. Even though I mainly do the decorative end and murals now I am glad to see you following us old pros into the business. Great trick with the Five In One, and I have a few I would like to pass on to you by sending you a free copy of my Basic Painting DVD just send an email with your info
Randall!!! Thank god man! Thank god there is finally a video posted on youtube by a REAL Professional painter!
I thought i was losing my mind looking at all the "Pro's" giving out horrific advice. Your technique is absolutely flawless. From the patching/spot priming, to knifing down the tape with your 5in1, to fanning out the paint and starting slightly off the edges, properly using a roller tray.
This is exactly how an actual pro paints! I 100% approve every detail. Good Job!
@kallstarify Thanks, I know not every painter, paints in the exact same way (most don't tape doors edges). The video is mostly just things I had to be reminded of when I was an apprentice. Someone had to represent "the real Pros" I'm glad to hear you approve.
@milo555a Thanks! I've seen a lot of those other vids from "pros" too, and they are usually pretty awful. Although I must say it's not easy trying to show/teach everything in ten minutes.
I used to be a painter, and to save time I didn't do not W pattern. I just filled the roller with as much pain as possibe (without causing drips)t and literally rubbed it all over the wall, then I smoothed it out :)
@frank0067 the best place is somewhere where you or anyone else wont trip over it and wherever it feels most comfortible for you i personaly place it too my left and just push it with my foot as i move now granted i only fill it 1/4 of the way as not to spill any
Right on! Best "how to video" I've seen. Great instruction and to the point. I have an attic apartment I'm painting this week. Hopefully, I'll do ok for it being my first time, lol. Thanks for posting ;)
very helpful video. got some question, if im going to repaint the wall with the same color of the old one. does it necessary to paint it all white first or can i just repaint it double application? thanks
i used the technique with the black line to get a straight line an it worked muuuuch better than with tape!.. thank you so much.... and i used nearly the same green color because i liked it so much ;)
this is the best how-to-paint-video on youtube!!! thanks for sharing your knowledge :)
Thanks! This is the best 'how-to' video I have seen here. I actually got some tips and I am not a total novice. You might get someone to hold the camera though for better shots. Thanks!
The paint hes talking about, high quality, is easy to spot. Basically it costs more.

Great video though, thanks for the help!

@chevyman95 I know, but it's not the generic blue tape and I only use it over freshly painted surfaces. Glad you liked it though!!

@champ3660 Get a 5 in 1 tool when cleaning those rollers too. It will keep you from wasting all of that paint.
