Had she not intervened, he would have remained hanging until asphyxiation killed him, thus meaning he did not fail at doing so. If anyone failed, it was the girlfriend. She failed at keeping him alive. After going through the effort of reviving him, another person killed him, meaning she failed her goal.

What's this guy talking about? Assuming the story he's telling is true, the man that hanged himself didn't fail at killing himself. He succeeded in doing so, but was revived by his girlfriend. Had she not intervened, he would have remained hanging until asphyxiation killed him, thus meaning he did not fail at doing so. If anyone failed, it was the girlfriend. She failed at keeping him alive. After going through the effort of reviving him, another person killed him, meaning she failed her goal.
