The 1996 version made me think of how in appearance wise Jane and Rochester looked so uncompatible. Jane looked like a sixteen year old and Rochester I understand is not suppose to be attractive but the man cannot have that appeal a Byronic Hero needs!
The best version to me is the 2006 version with the 1983 version as a close 2nd. I honestly can't stand the 1996 version. It's completely laughable to me. The casting was horrible (except for Jane and Adele. I think those two actresses gave exceptional performances) and I really don't understand why everyone raves over it so much! I'm glad I saw the 1983 version first otherweise I don't think I would have cared for the movie adaptations of this novel. I like the 2011 version as well.
The 2006 scene is best. The others don't do well out of context. 1983 is my favorite b/c it's most like the book. The production values aren't great and it's more like a stage play than a film but it's the best portrait of Jane's indomitable spirit. 2006 really captures the vulnerability of Jane and Edward. It's easier to relate to them. I enjoy the 2006 love story the best. Enjoyed 1996 but American Rochester and tall Jane annoyed me. It's my least fave. 2011 best shows Jane as an artist.
Thanks so much for doing this. Do you think you'll update it soon with the scene from JE2011? I personally prefer the 2006 version, but that's just me!
I much prefer the 2006 version just because there is so much more emotion shown with both jane and rochester. Sometimes in hte other versions Jane's self control over her feelings almost come off as indifference sometimes, even though we know it is not. Rochester also seems to be so much more caring and soft-spoken when its just him and jane, making it believable why she would fall in love with a man so stern and demanding as he on the outside
@materialgrl47 I like the 2011 version....although it is not shown here but I like it because although Jane controls her emotion, like she is supposed to, you can see the pain and sadness in her eyes and on her face expressions...
Mr Rochester is so tender in the 1983 version. He caresses her chin. The others don't get close enough to touch her.
The reason he brought Blanche back to Thornfield was to make Jane jealous and get her riled up enough to profess her love for him. That's why he encouraged the conversation about governesses.
i like the version of 2006 the best because i saw this one first and then i did read the book but rochester is a bit of a basterd in that version because he begon the conversation on gouvernesses while he knew what was comming but it was al for a good cause of corse
estoy esperando ver la versión de 2011, Michael Fassbender es sensacional y creo que me va a gustar por cierto sabe alguien donde se puede ver , con o sin subtitulos en español ?
The version where I found the atmosphere and characters of the book .... for me is that of 1996............ I like very much Charlotte Gainsbourg ( Jane)
The jane in the '83 version... I didn't like her. She doesn't have the strength or inner fire that could make me believe that Mr. Rochester could have fallen in love with her. I liked him, but not her. I felt like she was too pitiful or something. I hate the '96 version so much; Mr Rochester is all wrong and he looks like a pedophile with that young Jane lol
the 2006 version is def. the best. They have awesome chemistry. Mr. R is gorgeous and Jane is a really good actor.
I actually saw the recent version with Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender and it wasn't all that great, if I'm honest. It was well-shot, the lighting was beautiful, Wasikowska's a pretty decent actress and the first act was very good, but Fassbender, for a man who's accents are spot-on, is actually very boring to watch and the two of them had absolutely no chemistry. They even left out Jane's speech before she left Rochester! That speech is vital!
@Annetje82 Yeah, the ending sort of lacked passion for me and that annoyed me. The ending in the 2006 version, to me, did it perfectly 'cause Stephenson and Wilson had such a greta chemistry that when you see them together again, you genuinely feel the joy they feel with being back together again.
Looks wise, I think that she was a good choice. The way they dressed her, her hair, it wasn't a good style for her. But I hated that version of it, she was not a good actress for it.
@VirgiliaCoriolanus same. I think the 2006 version with Ruth Wilson was the best to date. I was disagreeing with the statement that they are ugly. I think both are beautiful and the whole world thinks Gainsbourg is beautiful.
I wasn't saying that she isn't beautiful.....I've seen pictures of her not in the film. But the victorian style wasn't a good style for her at all. It made her look like a stick, and she did look plain, yet very interesting. I do think they are both unusual beauties, especially Ruth Wilson.
My preference is for the 1983 and the York/Scott version -- they seem the truest to the novel. (The later BBC version is a disgrace; it just about rapes the text of the original novel.)
My fav is with Timothy Dalton, because 2006 version is not so naive, sensitive, romantic! 2006 version is full of kisses and things like that! but i liked the version with Dalton because they're feelings were they're minds, eyes, words, not in passion and bed scenes) my opinion)(sory for my bas english)))
Where is George C Scott and Susannah York? That one remains my favorite, probably because it is the first one that I saw. That was a wonderful version. Toby Stephens is way too sexy to be Rochester...so is Timothy Dalton. That is not how he is depicted by Charlotte Bronte, but it makes them enjoyable to watch! My favorite of these versions is the last one, mostly because of the performance of Ruth Wilson...anguish coupled with pride. She hit the nail on the head.
1983: the most good looking Rochester (shouldn't he look rougher & less good looking, according to the book?). Jane look so old here.
'96 version: the plainest looking Jane, the closest depiction to the book, but she's too cool, could've shown some emotions a bit. The prettiest Adelle here.
2006: The chemistry between them is amazing. I like this version best. :)
mmm i think the 1983 version has good acting, the 1996 jane eyre is how i pictured her, but she seems kinda cold, not soft enough, and the connection in the 2006 version is great. mr rochester is good in this version too. if they put these parts together it would be perfect :)
1983 - Dalton is my favorite Rochester, just because of the poetry of the language (Michael Jayston, in the 1970 version, is really excellent). I think Ciarian Hinds looks most like Bronte's version though
1996 - I love Zefferelli's scenes, each and every one. I want to reach out and touch them.
2006 - the team is so well matched that this becomes my favorite though there are drawbacks to this one also. this is my favorite Jane but I do love Samantha Morton's version also
83 - Well this scene is a bad example BUT the best and TRUEST by far! 96 - So sad that they came out with a terrible version the year I was born :'{ and finnally 06 - the year my sis was born strange enough :} very good but not as totally awesome as 83... Oh and I missed the "My"- too!!!!! I remember the first time I watched it I was like "OMG where did that go?!?!?!?!" Well they r all better than that b&w g rated one I watched the other night...... teerrrriiiibbbllllleeeee
@FreakaboutJChrist You were probably watching the first Jane Eyre movie made, with Orson Wells and Joan Fontaine.Since you were born only about 15 yrs ago,I'd expect that you would see it that way, however, this was the first and ONLY movie version of the novel that I had ever seen until the 1983 one and I already had seen Dalton in "Wuthering Heights" and loved him.By the way,I saw an interview on BBC with Toby Stephens and he spoke about watching ORson Wells' performance as Rochester many times.
The best is 2006 by far because Ruth Wilson is so expressive. 1984 is second, and 1996 is third. Toby Stephens gets the right combination of caring and commanding, t oo.
Although it's old and the props and costumes may look a little ridiculous, I think that the 1973 version had some excellent acting. This scene that we're examining here was especially well done.
@glassineheart The main stuff was still there... they are allowed certain liberties in adaptations you know, makes it more interesting - different interpretations.
I especially like how Ruth Wilson handled the line where she says "nothing in particular", then seems to think, "no wait I am supposed to be doing my job, not "nothing", so she quickly adds," teaching Adele, of course."
I am re-reading the book and just reached this scene which is one of my favorites in the '06 movie. When I saw the movie, I thought Rochester seemed more abrupt and clipped in his remarks to Jane than I remembered from the book. Actually the dialogue here is almost exactly the same in both, though the movie is shortened a bit.
I agree. This is a great sene in the adaptation of 2006 and it follows the book quite closely. It's the same with the scene when Jane asks for a vacany and Rochester gives her part of her salary. Another wonderful scene which follows the book closely and conveys the playful atmosphere of the book.
I like the scene from the newest one best. I think William Hurt was a better Rochester than I expected him to be, and although I have some problems with the fact that I think Toby Stephens is too good-looking for Rochester (as is Timothy Dalton) I think he did a wonderful job with the character. There are things I like about each of these versions, but I think Ruth Wilson is the best Jane by far.
I Loved This book so much! Toby Stephens is my favorite Rochester even though it was not a perfect portrayal of him he shows the closest portrayal of him.
This scene is done best by Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson. I like Timothy Dalton's interpretation of Mr. Rochester too, but I don't like how Zelah Clarke portrays Jane Eyre. The character is said to be stubborn and passionate. There is not much of it in Ruth Wilson's portrayal, but Zelah Clarke is much too submissive and feeble. Like a tiny little mouse without blood and vitality.
I think the 2006 version, even though not amazingly faithful to the book in the dialogue, is still the one that I can mostly feel like I am watching what I had imagined while reading the book. They have represented so well the passionate side of Jane and Mr Rochester, and the Gothic atmosphere is incredible. I think no other Jane Eyre can measure up to the 2006 in these criteria.
2006>1996>1983 IMO though a couple of scenes in the 2006 ones were not so good... that one line "and you can tell me about your journey into..." blah blah as they are leaving the library seems really poorly written. That one line makes me cringe.
@Schoolgirl325 really,, but in a way I am very biased towards willian hurt see, he is one of my favorites . but really why do you think it is the worst??? very curious. the reason why liked the 1996 version is because they could act very good.
@idilali oh the major reason that I thought the 1996 version was the worst was because I felt that the Jane and Rochester's personalities were so bland and boring but why do you think the 1996 version so much?
Excelent work! the 1996 version it's the better in ambient and visual, but the develope of characters of the 2006 version is best (for me). I like too the version of 1973, a strong rol of Rochester.
well i'm actually confused the three movies seem to be acceptable... i've always believed that 96 version is the best but if they only made mr.rochester bites his lips after saying "good night my..."
In the 1996 movie, was Wm Hurt asleep, the ants in my kitchen show more emotion ! I would imagine on their wedding Nite (1996 movie) I bet Rochester had to hire someone to sleep with Jane !
Well, I'm so crossed between the 1983 and the 2006 version. I mean, in the 1983 one, Rochester places his hand under Jane's chin, but in the 2006 version, it's so cute how Jane actually cries and Rochester actually shows less dramatic emotion.
I have to say the 2006 version is my fav! I think the Mr. Rochester in this version was perfect. And I feel that Jane had more personality as well. The chemistry between them is amazing! :)
@lavenderblossom Gainsbourg pretty? Really? She'slooks appropriately horrendous in Victorian garb. She does loom kinda pretty in the scenes with her hair down though...
I should of stated more clearly, that I meant of all three Janes' I thought she was the prettiest. Maybe not 'pretty', in the conventional sense, but not ugly to be honest.
They're all plain, but none is ugly. They look nice in their own way. And it is true that we must take into account the hairstyles and outfits and everything...
@lavenderblossom Actually, I find Wilson prettier than the others, but then it's all about taste. Gainsbourg IS pretty in a demure, pale madonna kinda way, but Victorian style costume looks REALLY bad on her, which is a good thing in this case. That's all I really meant. In Jane Eyre she doesn;t, to me yes, look close to attractive...which once again is how it should be...
@lavenderblossom It's sort of love-hate with that scene. It's not faithful but it is extremely accurate in others ways. It's perhaps too sexy, but the sensuality of it makes Jane's emotional struggle more pronounced and profound to the contemporary viewer...and Maguire has great hands...XD
I like the 1983 version, mostly because it stays true to the book and it's not as melodramatic/soap-operaesque as the 2006 one. I haven't checked out the one with Charlotte Gainsborough (sp?) or Samantha Morton though.
My favourite is 2006 version, although you can´t hardly see the difference in age. Rochester in the 1996 looks too old (in the book, he´s in his late thirties) and that Jane lacks the sarcasm of the original. Too serious. Ruth is great!
1983 IS THE BEST! Even though the actress for Jane could have been better, Timothy Dalton, no body can beat him in playing Edward, His looks, voice, shape, passions... goshhh
His behavior here always eludes me. He can see she's being tormented by his elite guests; yet he insists that she be there. Why? He clearly knows the class boundaries more than anybody else! Why does he wish to torment her especially when he sees how noticeably upset she is? Doesn't seem likely since he's bothered by her sad past; yet he exposes her to this. It's the only time I don't understand Rochester.
@calamtykel He wanted her there, not to make her feel sad, but to make her feel jealous. In the book when she asks him why he was always flirting with Blanche in front of her, he answered that because he wanted her to be as crazy in love with him as he was with her. So he wanted Jane there because he wanted her to watch him flirting (on purpose, what a bastard hahaha) with other woman so she would feel jealous.
I was surprised that all three scenes occured on the stairs. Did you notice? In the book it says she was on the mat at the foot of the staircase. Odd... And none have my favorite line!!! Rochester says, "'Goodnight, my--' He stopped, bit his lip, and abruptly left me." :(
The Orsen Welles version of this scene is very powerful and it is the first time that Rochester's softer side is seen. The 2006 version seems the most raw in that Jane is obviously upset.
Although the 1944 version drastically cut scenes from the book... Orsen Welles IS the ultimate Edward Rochester! Sorry to see it wasn't included in this montage.
I must go against the norm and like 96 the best. True Toby and Ruth have great chemistry but 96 has the best Jane Eyre. I love them both. Also Toby is to good looking for Rochester but I can't hate them for that. He was most enjoyable to watch.
I think I noticed 2 places where he says "my..." and you expect something like 'dear Jane' to follow. I was also bummed out they didn't keep those lovely hints of his love.
@IloveSirLancelot Toby Stephens did not have to say it- it was in his voice especially when he said "Tell me Jane why are you crying?" I think that almost saying "my dear" would have been giving away too much .
@rubyroo76 hmm, yeah, I see your point. I remember when I was reading the book for the first time and I read that part I was like, "HELLO, Jane, he's obviously in love with you, stop being so daft!" but even so... it would have made me happy to see that "good night, my-" line in a movie version :)
@IloveSirLancelot I totally agree! That is such a wonderful part and they always cut it. I always wondered what Mr. R was say next (well not much to wonder). My favorite pairing was the 2006, but they changed too much of the dialogue. Well, I'm still hoping for the best Jane Eyre version to be made.
i notice that the first respect the story from the book the best i mean the details are exactly like in the book but in the version of 1996 and 2006 the details are not exactly like the one from book...
I think Charlotte Gainsborough is the prettiest, but the 2006 movie is my favorite. Toby Stephens is so sexy as Rochester, who happens to be one oh my favorite male literary characters.
great job! ... i love the 1983 one AND the 2006 version. i don't know if i could decide between the two!! also, i think the 1996 version is too short! i wish they'd drawn it out a few more minutes and kept them closer together ... ={
that 2006 one is the best i think :) I love Rochester`s voice and the way Blanche Ingram speaks. And Jane is not such a beauty as in 1944, but still pretty enough to look at her 4 hours long!!!!
I think Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson are the best casting for their characters. She expresses Jane's character very well with her eyes, as do many of the other girls too! But Mr.Rochester is perfect to the description I think. I thought he was so temperamental it might feel controversial to someone who hasn't read the story before and there are times where Wilson, to me, seems a little to obvious: with the crying. But I like that one the best! =)
I don't like how Ruth Wilson plays in this movie, she's definitely too whining...in the most important and moving moments the best she can do is crying.
If Dalton saw 2006 version he would thought what a pity it was for him not to have Ruth Wilson as a partner in his absorbing and faithful 1983 version!
If I could do a cast mix up it would definitely be Timothy Dalton and Ruth Wilson. It would be amazing :D This is such an interesting video and fun to see side by side! Great job!
I actually think the two first are the best because the feelings are more implicite. I love the series from 2006, but this scene was a bit too obvious here.
there's another version, i think it was 1997? with Samantha Morton....but i have to say Ruth and Toby's is my favourite as well, its the most believable one
I love the last one. The secondary characters are interesting in the other versions, but Rochester is mean in the second one, and it is hard to read the first one (which is normal for the character, I guess), but the last one makes you believe Jane is WELCOME in the company of guests, not that he is torturing her.
2006 OF COURSE!!!! Lovy Toby...

2006--the emotion shown by Jane is both in check and available to the audience. Plus Rochester is both stern and kind.
1983--the touch was excellent, but the actress portraying Jane did not look upset. She showed almost no emotion. I didn't like her at all.
1996--Only because the scene felt so rushed. Not enough time to grasp the emotion or importance of the scene.

where's the, um, dialogue from bronte's book in the stephens/wilson version?
glassineheart 1 year ago
@glassineheart The main stuff was still there... they are allowed certain liberties in adaptations you know, makes it more interesting - different interpretations.
skulblaka92 1 year ago
I especially like how Ruth Wilson handled the line where she says "nothing in particular", then seems to think, "no wait I am supposed to be doing my job, not "nothing", so she quickly adds," teaching Adele, of course."
rubyroo76 1 year ago 2
I am re-reading the book and just reached this scene which is one of my favorites in the '06 movie. When I saw the movie, I thought Rochester seemed more abrupt and clipped in his remarks to Jane than I remembered from the book. Actually the dialogue here is almost exactly the same in both, though the movie is shortened a bit.
rubyroo76 1 year ago 2
@rubyroo76
I agree. This is a great sene in the adaptation of 2006 and it follows the book quite closely. It's the same with the scene when Jane asks for a vacany and Rochester gives her part of her salary. Another wonderful scene which follows the book closely and conveys the playful atmosphere of the book.

Timothy Dalton will always be Mr Rochester to me! X
Allpinky 1 year ago
I like the scene from the newest one best. I think William Hurt was a better Rochester than I expected him to be, and although I have some problems with the fact that I think Toby Stephens is too good-looking for Rochester (as is Timothy Dalton) I think he did a wonderful job with the character. There are things I like about each of these versions, but I think Ruth Wilson is the best Jane by far.
Janeite1 1 year ago 2
I Loved This book so much! Toby Stephens is my favorite Rochester even though it was not a perfect portrayal of him he shows the closest portrayal of him.
Schoolgirl325 1 year ago
This scene is done best by Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson. I like Timothy Dalton's interpretation of Mr. Rochester too, but I don't like how Zelah Clarke portrays Jane Eyre. The character is said to be stubborn and passionate. There is not much of it in Ruth Wilson's portrayal, but Zelah Clarke is much too submissive and feeble. Like a tiny little mouse without blood and vitality.
TheGlaros 1 year ago

@crimsonrose lol...I own the 2006 version and have watched it several times and that line always makes me cringe too. The one flaw in that movie.

@idilali oh the major reason that I thought the 1996 version was the worst was because I felt that the Jane and Rochester's personalities were so bland and boring but why do you think the 1996 version so much?

In the 1996 movie, was Wm Hurt asleep, the ants in my kitchen show more emotion ! I would imagine on their wedding Nite (1996 movie) I bet Rochester had to hire someone to sleep with Jane !
elbyonly 1 year ago
Well, I'm so crossed between the 1983 and the 2006 version. I mean, in the 1983 one, Rochester places his hand under Jane's chin, but in the 2006 version, it's so cute how Jane actually cries and Rochester actually shows less dramatic emotion.

2006 is of course the best version. Mr.Rochester and Jane were perfect in this version, and it brought about the whole...Gothic atmosphere perfectly.
I dislike the Jane in the '83 version, and I dislike the Mr.Rochester in the '96 version.
I think Jane in the '96 version is the prettiest though...But I hate how they changed the story.
lavenderblossom 1 year ago 19
@lavenderblossom Gainsbourg pretty? Really? She'slooks appropriately horrendous in Victorian garb. She does loom kinda pretty in the scenes with her hair down though...
MadameChristie 1 year ago
I should of stated more clearly, that I meant of all three Janes' I thought she was the prettiest. Maybe not 'pretty', in the conventional sense, but not ugly to be honest.
They're all plain, but none is ugly. They look nice in their own way. And it is true that we must take into account the hairstyles and outfits and everything...
lavenderblossom 1 year ago
@lavenderblossom Actually, I find Wilson prettier than the others, but then it's all about taste. Gainsbourg IS pretty in a demure, pale madonna kinda way, but Victorian style costume looks REALLY bad on her, which is a good thing in this case. That's all I really meant. In Jane Eyre she doesn;t, to me yes, look close to attractive...which once again is how it should be...
MadameChristie 1 year ago
Well, since Jane is meant to be plain...
But, I of course love the '06 version the best. I really loved everything about that adaptation. Jane is the best there, and so is Mr. Rochester.

@lavenderblossom Yeah...Toby Maguire is a great Rochester...him in that bedroom scene...XD

lavenderblossom 1 year ago
@lavenderblossom It's sort of love-hate with that scene. It's not faithful but it is extremely accurate in others ways. It's perhaps too sexy, but the sensuality of it makes Jane's emotional struggle more pronounced and profound to the contemporary viewer...and Maguire has great hands...XD
MadameChristie 1 year ago
I agree....This scene was spicy XD
Sensual in this way that you know nothing is going to happen, but they still play with your mind a bit, teasing you.

It's the only time I don't understand Rochester.
calamtykel 2 years ago
He just wants to provoke her, to get some response
isbilia70 2 years ago
@calamtykel He wanted her there, not to make her feel sad, but to make her feel jealous. In the book when she asks him why he was always flirting with Blanche in front of her, he answered that because he wanted her to be as crazy in love with him as he was with her. So he wanted Jane there because he wanted her to watch him flirting (on purpose, what a bastard hahaha) with other woman so she would feel jealous.

I think Toby in particular could really pull off that lip-bite.

@IloveSirLancelot Toby Stephens did not have to say it- it was in his voice especially when he said "Tell me Jane why are you crying?" I think that almost saying "my dear" would have been giving away too much .
rubyroo76 1 year ago 2
@rubyroo76 hmm, yeah, I see your point. I remember when I was reading the book for the first time and I read that part I was like, "HELLO, Jane, he's obviously in love with you, stop being so daft!" but even so... it would have made me happy to see that "good night, my-" line in a movie version :)
IloveSirLancelot 1 year ago
@IloveSirLancelot I totally agree! That is such a wonderful part and they always cut it. I always wondered what Mr. R was say next (well not much to wonder). what i love about the 2006 version in comparison to the other two:
- humor
- silence on background
- dosed silences in conversation
- close-ups
- you, as the viewer, sitting behind the screen
- stairs symbolize their ranks and feelings in position
Some of these things make it more of a movie-movie in my experience... the other two are more play-movies.

great job! ... i love the 1983 one AND the 2006 version. i don't know if i could decide between the two!! also, i think the 1996 version is too short! i wish they'd drawn it out a few more minutes and kept them closer together ... ={
oopspaw 2 years ago
that 2006 one is the best i think :) I love Rochester`s voice and the way Blanche Ingram speaks. And Jane is not such a beauty as in 1944, but still pretty enough to look at her 4 hours long!!!!

Oh my gosh! The eighties one is just silly. The Jane in '96 looks like she's fourteen not eighteen. I love the 2006 version!!! It is the best!!
funnyheatmusicfreak 2 years ago 2
I think Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson are the best casting for their characters. She expresses Jane's character very well with her eyes, as do many of the other girls too! But Mr.Rochester is perfect to the description I think. I thought he was so temperamental it might feel controversial to someone who hasn't read the story before and there are times where Wilson, to me, seems a little to obvious: with the crying. But I like that one the best! =)
SpiffilyPeachy 2 years ago 3
I don't like how Ruth Wilson plays in this movie, she's definitely too whining...in the most important and moving moments the best she can do is crying.

I love the last one. The secondary characters are interesting in the other versions, but Rochester is mean in the second one, and it is hard to read the first one (which is normal for the character, I guess), but the last one makes you believe Jane is WELCOME in the company of guests, not that he is torturing her.
