Ya 'no', there was a bit of toleration back then. I was there, though marginal--one of those marching March-on-Washington-persons stepping forward with the actual Leaders.
Obviously this tune has always inspired Arlo. And so it has always stirred me. My most recent appreciations of Arlo's artistry is well provided by the most recent presentation of his feelings via his music here on YouTube.
This may be OLD,but it's wonderful. This song means so much to so many. For me it's a reminder of a Grandfather that I never met. And remember, the song is older than this performance.
@debbiedamoose the song dates back to the eighteenth century: John Newton the slave ship captain turned abolitionist and preacher. Been around for centuries, but no one (that I've ever heard) sings it quite like Arlo.
Everytime I hear this song now I always picture Lee Hays in Alices restaurant lol

I love this song. I love Elvis' version, I love church groups, I love it acapella. This one, though, is my favorite.

Thank God for Pete Seeger. I know some will think that an ironic statement, but I mean it. Kinda like ole Arlo, too.

Told my wife the other day just how perfect this song was to Arlo--and to Pete, together.

Look at these two, Arlo was a young lad and Pete looked almost as old as he looks now.
I think everyone is blessed who has a friend and mentor like Pete Seeger.
Thank ya all
