  • A ball joint separator would have been a quicker approach.

  • its not that the ball joint was stubborn it is just that that little 'spitter' of an air hammer could not punch out the part very efficiently consider upgrading =)

  • @mgjzwijacz I have upgraded to a better tool.

  • hey my kia rio lower ball joint goes into a grove and i tighten a clamp to it but when it is in all the way it is not flush at the top and it is like that on the other side also is this normal please respond?

  • @ima14yearoldmechanic Sorry my friend i have not done a ball joint replacement on the Rio so i can not comment if it is right or not.

  • @richpin06a ok thanks i got it now i had to push it in farther thanks :)

  • It is too bad so many parts are made without grease zerts.

  • @mobes329 I'm with you there.

  • holy shit its Ray Romano!!

  • @MMAGGS77 Were were oh shit i missed him.

  • Do i need to jack the vehicle from the two sides or just only the one which i will work?

  • @Azion111 It is possible to jack up only one side.

  • i brought my car in for an alignment and the mechanic showed me that he could wiggle the tire like you showed at :30. He said i needed to replace the tie rod. He did but my car still drifts abit to the left and feels wierd when i jack the wheel alot to the left so im starting to suspect that it was actually the ball joint that was the problem and not the tie rod...

  • @aieljose You need to bring it to a different place and have it checked out.

  • @richpin06a Nah im going to get my cousin to look at it. The kids 18 yet he's practically building his own car. Hopefully he can find out whats wrong with it and if its just the ball joint i can do it myself...or get him to do it.lol

  • @aieljose well it depends on which tie rod there's a inner and outer tie rod. Any movement of the wheel can be the inner tie rod. To test the ball joint use a cro bar to see if it moves up and down if it does its bad.

  • thanks i need to replace my ball joint.

  • i have a 2000 ford escort. will the procedure be the same for it? great vid!

  • so how many hours of labour did u charge? seing it only took 15 20 mins

  • richpin, is there a way to use the ramp and jackstands somehow? I use my small floor jack but I can never get the car high enough for the jackstands to extend themselves much. I have ramps too but I need wheels off for suspension jobs . . .

  • @malagabee What i do is drive the vehicle on the ramps then jack it up from there with a 4x4 block on the jack.

  • Great video. Replaced my ball joint last night step by step perfect. Although i did beat the crap out of the ball joint for awhile and it didn't come out all the way. I finally got under there and fiddled with it and it came right out by hand LOL! Only thing that sux is that the noise didn't go away.. MORE TROUBLESHOOTING!!

  • @derek94gt Sorry i did not get back to you sooner i just got back my internet from the recent Halloween snowstorm .

  • @richpin06a come to find out, its a loose break pad. caliper going bad? The two rods that the pad goes through are more oblong (the holes on pad) then circular. i had it shimed down and didnt move but she worked itself out. At least i have new ball joints. Also, i went to replace the passenger side sway bar bushing and it was missing.. no wonder i have poor cornering. Now she corners like my mustang :)

  • I have a 98 escort.. same procedure??

  • @derek94gt Yes it is.

  • Is there a cheaper way to remove a ball joint than to spend 100 dollars on a kit? is there a method to were you wouldn't need a press, or remover tool?

  • @nico27004 The Ford Escort in this video does not need the ball joint to be presses out of the control arm.

  • anychance you could do this vid on a mk2 golf gti lol

  • everybody loves raymond

  • @privateblue everybody loves richpin

  • @privateblue hahaha ur voice reminded me of raymond....but in this case it is richpin cause that video was what really replaced my balljoint issues

  • THANKS RICH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did both sides of my '91 wagon today.

Also threw on new tie rod ends for good measure.

  • @DirtDawberKY very good keep that saturn rolling.

  • how do you know if you need this procedure? i'm getting the same sound where i can feel a small play in my steering wheel, mostly after hitting bumps in the road. also my front wheels rattle up a bit and shake when driving down the road.

  • @deeboi619 I Jack up the vehicle and move the tire from side to side looking for play.

  • @richpin06a but rich, that can also indicate a bad wheel bearing as well. any way of knowing for certain what problem it can be?

  • you're the man, RichPin. another great video!

  • Good vid. Brings back memories of me having to brutalise rusty bits off old cars

  • Very informational video!!!!!!!! Keep them up !!!!!!

  • when I did the lower ball joint on my 97 dakota, we have to use a mini sledge to bang it out, and it still took almost 2 hours of hammering to pry it loose... love those impact tools

  • Good video quality, sound and lighting. thanks again.

  • Good times for sure.

  • Very good video,thanks.

  • we should have manditory inspections in michigan though. I cant tell you how many first generation W-body GM cars i see going down the road with the rear trailing arms rusted off the body and hanging off.

  • @cjones4512 If you think about it a salt belt state like Michigan really needs inspections.

  • @cjones4512 I'm surprised Michigan doesn't have inspections.

Inspections = more repairs = more spare parts sold.

  • With wheel on, I'm told that a bad ball joint can give play everywhere and a bad tie rod gives play at 3:00 and 9:00. Did it wobble everywhere?

Good tip about the knurled bolt -- that's another one of those observations that makes you so much better when you do the same job a second time, or when you have vicarious experience like this (grin).

  • @spelunkerd When i moved the wheel from side to side i could see movement in the ball joint.

  • Usually when I have stubborn ones like that, I put a chisel in the slot on the back side. Not that I think you don't know that, but for anyone else doing this, it's also an option if you're in a pinch.

  • The car has to pass inspection? Not in Michigan, you can put whatever piece of junk on the road in any condition you want. No emissions or safety checks.

  • @nobodyisname Your kidding me right.

  • @richpin06a No i afraid not, we have no inspections, its pretty awesome.

  • @richpin06a Nope, as long as it starts and runs you can drive and license it in Michigan.

  • @richpin06a

Nope he is right.Even here in Wisconsin we dont have inspections.

  • @richpin06a No inspection down here in Florida either. You should see some of the peices of shit on the road. Doors, lights, bumpers, naaa, we don't need those things to drive down the road. Idiots still drive around while spewing huge bluish clouds out the exhaust and its okay. And emergency donuts are okay for our 70 mph highways lol.

  • @nobodyisname Minnesota doesn't have inspections either. My '95 Escort wagon had some bad rust on the right rear control arm. It snapped in half where the sway bar link connected. It happened right before I got on the freeway - would have been nasty if it happened at speed. Front left and right rear coil spring each lost half a coil. Don't miss that car. Now driving the incredible 2000 Saturn SL-2, yee hah! Someday I'll have a real car.

  • no lock tight

  • good, I See you are wearing safety glasses......

  • not many escorts left now, although were way better than the focus.

  • hey richpin, instead of using a pickle fork, wouldnt a prybar work as well? or at least be considered an alternative?

  • @KillerZero259 Yes a pry bar should work.

  • @KillerZero259

Since richpin06a is replacing the balljoints using pickle fork does not matter.....

Know if he was removing the transaxle, he would have be careful about removing the ball joint..

You can use a prybar, but the pickle fork or using puller is best way.

  • @Chris07860 There is no adjustment between the ball joint mounting studs, so no, an adjustment is not necessary.

  • Awesome vid. That wasn't too bad.

  • lol i think i need somethng lol or my sway bar needs a tweak

  • Another good Vid RichPin.

Up here We dont call that part ball joint though, we call it endlink so at first i was confused lol :)
