If I don't like someone and they try to improve my attitude by being friendly to me then I actually end up disliking them even more. I can see where someone might think making friends out of enemies might work in theory but in reality that’s just a stupid idea. Sometimes the best thing you can give is your time and a listening ear. You'd be amazed at the stories of many of these homeless guys. Considering people ignore/reject them all day, sometimes our heart/soul need some love too.

(PS - social workers have shown that many donations reinforce homeless begging. Other institutions help them get back on their feet. Yet with some, only half your money goes to the people. @ World Vision, 90% goes to the people. It's one of the highest you'll find.)

Because I watched as everyone walked buy, not giving at all...not even one dollar. So i donated forty dollars. And then whatever change I had left when i walked out. Which was like 15 dollars. Sometimes, I hate the world... Because most of us can't do one good thing. So that's my good thing.

But giving to a charity or shelter who know how to use money to its best value will make a considerable difference.
