@danakerman - the ceiling was actually treated later on. As well as some low frequency absorption being added. However - listening to the final sound at the end of the clip before that treatment wouldn't lead anyone to believe there are "tons" of anything. It's a quite room, period.
@josebachata - It does get hot after a while because the space is so small - but what I find is more important is the temperature of the room before it gets used. If the room is nice and cool to begin with, it's quite nice to work in it for a while. If it's hot in there to start it can be a problem. Most of the time when it gets really hot I just open the door for a few minutes between takes. Most projects don't last forever.

hey man.. one question.. i built an 8x8 vocal booth..i been lookin for foam.. but i cnt find any cheap HQ sites.. anyway.. would i need to foam the entire room.. im usin it for rap recordings
@testr321 You'll need to apply as much foam as it takes to make it so that reflections from the walls don't show up in your audio. Some rooms can get away with less material - like those used to record the spoken word. Others will need more treatment if the voices are louder, yelling or punchy in any way. Your best bet is to record a little and adjust the materials accordingly most booths are going to sound like booths until you treat them enough to make the reflections go away.
@testr321 It's pretty muchh the same everywhere. Guitar Center and Sweetwater occasionally put together packages for relatively cheap - it's also good to keep an eye on Ebay for deals - just make sure if you buy used that the foam isn't all chewed up by adhesive from the previous installation.
@testr321 Ebay is good bro. I bought 200 sqf for 260$. My vocal booth is a 4ft wide and 6ft long and it covered the hole booth and i still had some left.
@Rezin603 - Tfoam on the outside is just for looks. And it helps control some of the noise in the main room. It doesn't have any effect on the noise coming in. That is where the booth construction comes in.

@FiSTFigHT09 They were in the first booth - which you can see by searching for "monster isolation booth" - in this one, because it's on top of a concrete slab I chose not to worry about it so much. It's still very quiet - and only the loudest things like passing helicopters and harleys make it through. I wasn't trying to keep out the world. Only 98% of it.
Surprisingly no. I had very low-wattage (25 watt) bulbs which were standard incandescent and they put off a litle heat - so I switched to the new florescent style bubs and haven't had any issues. I'm sure if you put a big, honky bulb in there you may get something - but I'm not going ot try.
Saw ur movies. The result is great.Sounds great as well.I was thinking of building a small vocal booth, but seeing the thickness of those walls I guess I got to settle with something less good. With walls that thick,I can only place half a person in it. I don't think they sound better that way.Gosh, back to the beginning. Any tips how to create an environment ,still accoustically ok with less space? My spare space, which is a part of my homestudio ( which is approx. 11x12 ft) is only like 5ft x 5ft.
yeah seen that as well as some other screens. Just wondered if it is any good. I mean, if the result is a dry sound, with no influence of the rooms reflections, I guess it would do. But in fact I wondered if one can build a small booth that has also those results (dry and clean sound). Of course I might try to create a box like you suggested myself to try it out, but a booth e.g. in an old moveable closet would that work? Anyway thanks for any advice here. :)
well obviously there would still be sound from the room .... but i'm still sceptical about vocal booth - really i never see people in studio videos use those - and even most of the time, there's not anything special in the room !
For the spoken word - this type of setup is great. For singing I think the room is way too small and dead.. Much greater acoustics are needed for singing. IMHO
Ah ok, well thnx anyway then. I guess I will have to compromise a bit then. I will still try to get some professional sounding recordings out of it :)
Thanks for the kind words - So far - the booth has been wonderful. The VO for the Turkey video was recorded in there. We created the bed for the Turkey video. As for the bed for this video I'm pretty sure its a royalty-free from Sound Ideas...
daaamnn maaan....this is amazing.... i hope it pays off...ive seen all those videos, and im impressed... and the best part is sound check... "its pretty quiet kids..." haha... can u write down the gear u using... mics, mixers, soundcards, etc...
This particular setup is: Neumann TLM-103 going into a Mackie 1604 VLV-PRO mixer, which then goes to an Echo Gina 24/96 Sound Card.
Everything is either Monster cables or Blue Gold-Tipped cables in a balanced, shielded configuration using exclusively TRS and XLR wiring. There aren't any Hi-Z cables or wiring used anywhere.
The glass inside does reflect, which is why it is angled down at the floor - also - the Neumann TLM103 has some shielding on the rear of the diaphragm to protect from early - direct reflections. The angled glass and the mic together solve the issue.
Holy fucking shit! Great videos!! I'm partway through my vocal booth construction and you answered a WEALTH of minor questions I had throughout the course of the vids. Thanks! I've always wondered..won't the window provide a bit of sound reflection into the mic?
i love how u guyz explained everything thnx but i was just wondering im building my vocal booth and i got my studs and everything up but i was jsut wondering what do i have to put up inside and outside the booth so that whatever is happening out side the booth liek noises and stuff wnt go in if you can please help me that would be great thnx
I watched your videos about the booth over and over again. I used the ideas you folks talked about in my own booth construction. Nice job kids!

You should have treated the ceiling as well. Your getting tons of reflections off that ceiling and some off the window.

No - I was concerned about that to. As long as you use low-wattage lights (25watt) you won't have an issue. NO FLORESCENT ALLOWED!
