@flutgos the race was rained out on Sunday AND on Monday. The last 180 of the 200 laps were raced on Tuesday, so there were many fans (myself included) who had to go back home to work.
I've seen the last 16 Indy 500's in a row. After each race I rate them. The '97 Indy ranks as my least favorite, one below the boring 2000 race. (No offense to anyone.) Favorite was the '06 thriller.
You can see the flagman scrambling for the green flag with the leader already a big way up the front stretch. Arie would have won regardless, but imagine the uproar if this would have allowed Goodyear to pass him on the restart...
lol I remember being 9 years old and saying, "Dad those cars look weird, what happened to all the normal Indycars and drivers?, I only know a couple of these guys driving, and why do they sound like stock cars!?"
I remember that, too. I was like: "hey, isn't that a brazilian? (Marco Greco) Where are Raul Boesel, Mauricio Gugelmin, Gil de Ferran...?" Then I noticed other missing names, like Tracy, Zanardi, Herta and Vasser.
My uncle came with the sad news (which I couldn't understand, I was too young yet): "it seems they've split up. Now there are two OW American series where once there was one."
I understand the Goodyear sentiment and it certainly looked a last-minute decision, but in the biggest race, on the last lap, don't you think you should be prepared for anything (especially after boning it up in 1995)?
Also, was Arie speaking "Dutch" on the backstretch? heh.
Scott Goodyear kind of got screwed over in this one. That last-lap green flag decision by USAC looked like it was made in a rush--the flagger didn't look ready for it, and the lights weren't ready. It didn't even look like the other cars were ready for that.
Tony Stewart was a champion in the IRL, and he was far from a "fat ass" back in those days. Do you forget his open-wheel resume? You seem to know so much about the Indy 500 but not Indy racing in general.
Well, he's one of the only IRL champions that didn't win the Indy 500...ever. And he's said some nasty things about Danica's weight, even though he's 220+ (and not in speed). Sorry if your a NASSCAR fan and I insulted the captain of your mythical team. Get over yourself.
Take another look at Tony in those days. He was pretty much skin and bones then. Yes, he is a bit round these days, maybe Subway can get him back in shape for Indy cars. I hope so.
You're right, and that gives him even less reason to criticize someone like Danica, whose weight is not helping her to victory as it stands. Regardless, his recent move to running his own team will actually allow him to run at Indy (the real Indy) soon enough. So we'll see.
yep, and the rest of the IRL too from messing up the Texas race right after...when Arie really won but they scored Boat as the winner...and AJ punched Arie in Victory Lane...
I agree, totally pathetic on USAC's part...and now look where they are!
cluster fuck restarts.

@yoda10ike ohhh ok. I can't believe that I did not know that. That explains it. That's a pretty large crowd then for a Monday.

Man, I forgot just how stupid USAC was. Hell, they couldn't run a slot car race without screwing it up.

if they would of told the drivers that they were going green. Scott Goodyear would of won

Stewart hit the wall!!! His fat ass couldn't handle Indy cars...had to move to the wide-seat series...haha.

Eloquently put. But I've been following his career the entire time, and I've been to every Indy 500 he was ever in. So, I beg to differ.

Must be the computer. Video is playing fine for me and everybody else. I even checked it out on other computers and there is no trouble.
