Wow! I´ve used the follow through several times in 8-ball, but when i tried to do a draw, it just stopped. Now i know and i´m gonna try the shot out tomorrow!
I've played pool like 4 times, but I just love it!!! And I need to learn a looot of techniques, but I just got one silly question... When u do a bridge, can u place ur hand like u want to, like u feel more conftable or is there any rule for it???
There is no rule, but you must be comfortable and at the same time, keep your bridge out of the way of the shot. This may require some practice. Remember to keep your elbow lateral so hand position is up and down, this keeps your shot in line,
do not elevate ur hand when u use draw shot....keep the hand down on the table....level cue.....make sure u hit cue ball lowest as posible....thats it...dont raise cue butt!!!
Again, as I replied on my last comment, I can get away with elevation because I'm a more advanced player. You on the other hand better stick to straight pool because apparently you can't draw from an elevated position.
Thank you so much Dean, I must admit I've been struggling with spins and Masse-shots, but thanks to these vids I have a much better idea about them! :) Thank you man! :D
Thanks for the comment and don't put too much emphasis on your spin, remember speed control, angle and positioning for the next shot, makes every shot on the table easy. Just play good pool.
This is a tough shot for any player, you should never leave your cueball on the rail to begin with, but if you are in this situation lay your cuestick on the rail and then position your bridge, keep the cuestick level and do not overstroke.
dean, i need ur help immediatley! i CANNOT get the cue ball to draw much at all im an amateur and need to learn......i can apply simple English but i cannot draw the cue ball at all, my cue ball is in used condition and has some chips in it. do u think if i purchase that speckle cue ball that u use would that help? and for the record to draw the cue ball u need to chalk heavily, aim low, and good stroke. is that correct? please oh please respond
Sorry, somehow I missed this comment. I hope you're using a cue ball with no chips. This is a good start. You may want to purchase a training cue ball, yes the one with the dots. This helps you to see the spin of the cueball. That's why you see them on television. You are correct about chalking up, aiming low and a good stroke. Thanks for the comment and sorry for the delay. Keep up the good work, it sounds like you're going to be a great player someday.
You're absolutely correct, level cue is better when possible. Keep up the good work. As far as right English goes, try to avoid English to begin with unless you are in a jam. Thanks for the comment.
Since when should you elevate the butt of your cue for a draw shot? I've noticed alot of beginners doing this because they feel it's necessary, but you get a better stroke with much more draw when hitting with a level cue. At least, in my expericene that is....
Yes, you are correct, I elevated a little to much on this shot. Keep your cue a level as possible, you get more accuracy and better contact on the cue ball. I would only elevate when jumping or performing a masse shot. thanks for the comment, and good luck with your game
Yes you are correct, I'm not sure what I was thinking on this shot, and was rushed a bit. Keep it level when you can for more accuracy, thanks for your comment.
Draw really shows off your game if applied correctly. Try not to get carried away during play, only apply draw if you really need it. Good Luck with your game
Good question, there is no rule here, what ever feels right to you. Perfect both types of bridge and apply the one that fits the shot, the object is to keep the cue tip in place when striking the cue ball, you don't want the tip to bounce off the cue ball at any time. I hope this makes sense, good luck
Do you have a video on how to make a ball ride the rail down to a pocket by shooting it at an angle like you did on the 9 ball? I can never seem to get that to work. It only ever seems to make the target ball bounce back from the rail and completely ruin the shot.
Just imagine that the rail is not there, and see what angle you would need to hit it so it would go to the pocket, in most cases, you hit the cue ball so it just barely slices the other ball. works for me anyways
I think a youtube user named "forcefollow" has some good drills on shots riding the rail. From my experience, sometimes what messes up those shot is making contact with the object ball before you make contact with the rail with the cueball. Try to go rail first with the cueball, and the speed at which you hit the white should translate into the speed the object ball gets going down the rail. let me know how it goes.
if its frozen to the rail, just think about hitting the rail and the ball at the same time. thats usually the most effective way to hit that shot. otherwise the object ball will bounce off the rail
Many players mistakenly call these spins english. Both expressions may be combined to explain the point of the cue ball aimed at for a shot. A player asked What sort of english did you use? might respond, High left english or A bit of bottom right english, etc. to explain that both top or bottom spin and sidespin was applied.
Call it what you want, but many players still call this english.
@getlois: for the drawback, you get a cleaner screwback if you have cue as low down as possible, with it under your chin and follow through. Snooker players do it all the time, they have a very different style to the American pool players
I think you got it, of course practice this stroke and see what kind of results you get, even mark where you cue ball shoule stop after making your shot. Cue ball control is very important and can make every shot easy.
your second draw shot, you applied some English to move the cue ball closer to the object ball, right? why don't you just cheat the pocket for draw shot, i think the cue ball will move closer also to the object ball, what is the difference?

Yes, a level cue stick is better for accuracy, considering the distance of my shot I wasn't to concerned about accuracy I was just demonstrating two different types of english, follow through (top) and draw (bottom)both can also be shot with a level cue -

why on earth do you elevate the cue when hitting a draw shot? I thought you're supposed to keep the cue as level as possible. maybe not completely level but you elevated way too much.
Yes you should keep the cue level unless you have to elevate the cue for a masse shot, jump shot or to avoid a push shot etc... In this shot I was simply demonstrating where to hit the cue ball when executing a "Draw Shot" which you can shoot any way you like as long as you achieve the same result. I do bend the rules occasionally but only if I can get away with it...
Thanks for the comment and good luck with your game
Dean great videos man. Very useful. Can you post a video with tips as to how to shoot balls that are attached to the rail and need to be shot into the near(est) pocket? That is, what English needs to be used, speed and so on? Thanks. Once again, great videos
Top English.... works good for "Rail Shots" not to hard hitting the rail and the object ball at exactly the same time, you will never miss if executed this way... keep in mind the "Table Roll" and "Straight Rail" both of these conditions are important when executing a "Rail Shot" - Good Luck!
Thanks for your comment and I will include this shot in my next round of "Dean's Pool Tips"
Stay in touch and let me know how you are doing...
Yes, I have a video out on "Masse's" you may have not seen it yet. Check Veoh or Youtube and type in Dean's Pool Tips... I hope you find it. This tip takes some practice hitting the cue ball with extreme down stroke english using bottom left or right english to create enough spin needed to get around your opponents object ball.
don't forget to chalk after every "Masse Shot" - Good Luck with this shot, it's a "Game Winner"
Coool, now you nave to be able to beat the best players in the world.... how do you do that? ..... Yes..lots of work, my tips will help you to become a better player, but you will have to be dedicated enough to practice and become displined, cue ball control is everything, the game of pool is easy as long as you understand the game....
yea try to make the cue stick follow through, but if your doing that i reccomend a closed bridge, an open bridge can fling up if it comes down, and bounces off your hand
if you couldnt guess, that causes it to jump if done wrong
Yes, if your stroke is hard enough it could jump, in this demonstration the stroke was very soft, and when possible I like to use an open bridge... maybe on the next few tips I'll cover your message and illustrate what happens when the wrong bridge is used.... Thanks for the tip... tmac3323
Try a little more stroke, meaning hit the cue ball harder and adjust the angle and cue tip position on the cue ball. if 1 cuetip is not working try 1.5 - 2.0 below center and don't forget the chalk ;') Good Luck and let me know how your draw is coming.
Dean..I can't seem to use the draw-back technique, but I can do the follow through.I've put some chalk on the tip, set my english to around 1cuetip below centre and it wouldn't work, why?
Hey thanks so much Dean, you wouldn't believe how helpful these videos are for technique tweaking, no matter how simple it may seem. All the best.

That shot isn't the best example of draw vs follow.
1. If you get to the point where you're actually learning draw and follow, either shot would've been easy, neither would be a "better" shot.
2. IF you were straight in, it would have been a "better" choice to draw it back. I'd rather take a cut than a scratch.
3. Rolling the ball with a center ball hit would've given you great position as well.
4. There's no such thing as top "English". English refers to the x-axis of the cue ball.
2hvy4grvty 3 years ago
