Um, dear Lintflas, I think we're actually making the same point to FosterFoxtrot - see page 1 - who was an American who said "I don't speak German". These people strongly overlap with those who flood internet pages with remarks such as "I haven't seen this movie". LOL
Making films is expensive and therefore you also need businessmen to make decisions. This film recklessly ignored any considerations regarding length and budget. Thank God says the movie lover in me but still I do understand those people at UFA (and MGM) who wanted their money (back). That is plainly human, not American. And because of difficult chemical procdures in photography at the time changes kind of had to be made on the orginal negative. Nobody really cared about movies back then...
After seeing the premiere in Berlin last night, I have to say that the film is greater than ever, amazing. The incomplete version was a sheet of great images without a real plot. Now played with the original musical score with a live orchestra it is an illustrated symphony or an opera without singing, telling a complex plot with amazing cinematic means and added emotions by music synchronized to the point. A must see for everyone who likes movies, not only for film historians!
I hope the new footage is incorporated with the existing footage to make a single film. Apparently this new print that was discovered is over 200 minutes long -- a LOT longer than any previous known prints.
I hope Germans give some monemy to the Argentinian Film museum, they would really need it! I hope there are no greedy business around it, this discovery could help Argentina to keep up their movies better...
Ist das echt die 218minütige Langfassung oder die erste zurechtgeschnittene die um die 180min lang ist? Naja egal ich warte jetzt vllt noch 2-3 Jahre auf die restaurierte Fassung^^
I think the film was cut from well over 2 hours to something like an hour and a half; the American's attention span & comprehension level was too infantile to sit through the whole movie in its original form
Did the "attention-challenged Americans" burst into the editing booth and forcibly hack at the film with machetes?! Why take responsibility for your own actions when there is an American around somewhere to blame. God I hate Europeans!
How soon is hard to say. The restoration team will need to do quite a bit of work on it but when it eventually become available I'm double dipping. I've double dipped on Nosferatu when they found the Erdmann score.

I get it: Now a scratchy, full-length copy of the film has turned up in an archive in Argentina
Class struggle set in 2026; more than 37,000 extras, 200,000 costumes - And cost $200 million in USD
Naturally it was the demands of the attention-challenged Americans that caused the studio to send it to the cutting floor
A complete version was never found, (the 2001 ver used stills to fill in the blanks), until now
The Argentine ver is said to have plus 25 mins
It is up to the Murnau fd now

You're right.
The American version was cut short, because the European audience was too attention-challenged to make this film a hit in Europe.
It's kind of silly to hate an entire continent though.

You're right snuppy. I don't hate all Europeans. Actually, I don't hate any Europeans. I'm just tired of America bashing. It's just really old hat.

so beautiful.. It makes me want to cry... so happy to see that I will get to see this film in entirety
